BASE-LOCK FOR RECIPROCATING ENGINES.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE NVILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing 'at Algona, in the county of Kossuth and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Base-Locks for Be ciprocating Engines; and I do'here'by declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it'appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to base locks for reciprocating' engines; and, to this end, it consists of the novel devices and combinations ofdevices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
The invention is especially adapted for use in connection with engine-propelled section cars of that type wherein the transmission mechanism includes a driving belt, usually arranged to run over a pulley on'the engine shaft and a pulley on the driven axle of the car. In this type of section cars, the driving belt is tightened or. loosened, by sliding the engine bodily back and forth on a sub-base secured to the'platform of the.
' car. The engine isheld in different set positions on the sub-base, by means of a hand lever having a vawl arranged for cooperation with a note ed quadrant, said lever being fulcrumed on the platform and connected to the engine. This method of holding the engine againstthe pull of the belt is objectionable, for the reason that it holds against end thrusts in one direction only,
thus permitting the-engine to work backand forth on its sub-base, under the action of the vibration produced by the piston and connecting rod, and thereby subjects the ways or guides for tl e engine on the subbase to great wear. It .lso subjects the pawl and cooperating teeth on the quadrant to like wear under the pull'of the belt. The primary object of my invention is to overcome these objections by providing a positive lock to secure the engine on its subbase, in different set positions, as will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, likecharacters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Of the parts of the section car illustrated, it is important to note the platform 7, and front and rear axles 8, to which are secured pairs of wheels 9, arranged to run on a track 10. The section car ispropelled by an internal combustion engine of the horizontal type, and is indicated as an entirety by the numeral 11. Keyed to the engine shaft, is a relatively-small pulley l2, and rigidly secured to thefrear or driven axle 8, is a relatively large pulley 13, and over which two pulleys runs a belt 14.

'is a base in the form of a pair of laterally spaced flanges 15, which slidably rest upon 'a sub-base 16, having longitudinal ways 17 with which the flanges 15 closely engage to guide the engine with freedom for straight line sliding movement parallel to the belt 14. Theplatform under the sub-base 16 is cut away at 18, and said base, is provided at its two rear corners with integrally formed lugs 19,, which rest on the platform 7, and are rigidly secured-thereto by nutequi ped" bolts 20. A transverse bar 21 is rig'i ly-bolted to the platform 7, just forward of the sub-base 16, and the adjacent end of said sub-base is securedthereto, at its transverse center, by a horizontal pivot pin 22. Obviously, the connections 20 and 22 afford a'three-point support for the subbase 16 on the platform 7, and thereby permit said sub-base to remain level, irrespective of the twisting movementof the platform 7.
Theengine '11 is moved either forward or backward on the sub-base 16 by a hand lever 23 the lower end of which is fulcrumed on acaring bracket 24 bolted to the platform 7,'rearward of-said sub-base, and is intercase of said engine. To positively lock the engine 11 to the sub-base 16, against movement in either direction with respect to the travel of the belt 14, there is provided a horizontally disposed anchor plate 26 and an overlying substantially parallel anchor bar 27, said plate and bar having cut in the I opposing faces of their outer or free ends a plurality of interlocking transverse teeth or lock lugs 28., shown, are flat and extend at right angles to the anchor late and bar with which they are formed. he inner end of the anchor plate 26 is rigidly bolted to the upper face of the sub-base 16 and the anchor bar 27 is intermediately pivoted at 29 to the underside of the crank case of the engine 11.
A depending stem 30 is rigidly secured to the long or-free end of the-anchor bar 27 with its body portion extending through a longitudinal slot 31 in the anchor plate 26,
.said'slot being open at its outer end. The lower end of the stem 30 is screw-threaded to receive a' nut 32, which supports a washer.
33. A coiled spring 34 is compressed between the under face of' the anchor bar 26 and the washer 33 and yieldingly draws the anchor bar 27 toward-said plate with the teeth 28 interlocked. To swing the anchor bar 27 on its pivot 29, and thereby disengage its teeth 28 from the teeth of the anchor plate 26, there is provided, as shown in Figs.

hand piece of the lever 23, a hand piece 35 attached by short links 36 to said lever and connected by a rod 37 'to the free end of said anchor bar.
It will be noted that the anchor bar 27, owing to its length, must swing through a considerable arc to disengage its teeth 28 from the teeth of the anchor plate 26, and hence, a considerable movement of the hand piece 35 is required to release said anchor bar from the anchor plate. This feature is not objectionable, but it is awkward, when there is a. relatively large number of teeth 28 on the anchor bar 27. To reduce the movement of the hand piece 35, and, at the same time, impart the required lifting movement of the anchor bar 27 from the anchor plate 26, there is provided, as shown in the modification, illustrated in Fig. 6, a relatively long arm 38 to the free end of which the rod 37 is pivoted. The inner end of the arm 38 is pivoted at 39 to the inner end of the anchor plate 26 and its free or outer end underlies a laterally projecting pin 40. attached to the anchor bar 27.
To secure the engine 11 within its ways or guides 17, with freedom for sliding movement imparted thereto by the lever 23 1 and link 25, longitudinally extended lock bars 41 are suspended under the sub-base 16 from the engine base or flanges 15 by nut- The faces of the teeth 28, as
equipped stubs 42. These stubs 42 are secured to the lock bars 41 and project upward through long slots 43 in the sub-base 16 and bores in the flanges 15, and their nuts rest upon the upper faces of said flanges and support the lock bars therefrom. Obviously, the lock bars 41 must have sufficient play to permit the engine to freely slide on its sub-base. To take up this play and frictionally clamp the engine on its subbase against vertical vibratory movement produced by the engine and the movement A nut-equipped bolt 45 adjustably suspends the clamping head 44 at said intermev diate portion from the short end of the anchor bar 27 and also'permits independent movement of said bar, in respect to the clamping head 44. When the teeth 28 are interlocked, the spring 34, owing to the increased leverage of the long end of theanchor bar 27 over its short end, exerts sufficient force on the head 44 to frictionally clamp the lock bars 41 against the under face of the sub-base 16 and to frictionally clamp the engine onto the upper face thereof. i
To slide the engine 11 on the sub-base 16, for the purpose of tightening or loosening the belt 14, the hand piece 35 is first operated to lift the anchor bar 27 and carry'its teeth 28 out of interlocking engagement with the teeth on the anchor plate 26. This movement of the anchor bar 27 simultaneously releases the clamping head 44. Then,by manipulating the lever 23 the engine may be slid on the sub-base and positioned to place the belt 14 under the desired tension. After the engine 11 is properly positioned, the hand piece 35 is released to permit the spring 34 to return the anchor bar 27'to normal position and again interlock its teeth with the teeth on the anchor plate 26. This movement of the anchorbar 27 the sub-base, and a transmission mechanism for driving certain of said wheels from the engine.
2. The combination with the platform and wheels of a, car, of a sub-base having one of its ends rigidly secured to said platform and having its other 'end secured thereto in a horizontal pivot, a reciprocating engine adjustably mounted on the sub-base, and transmission mechanism for driving certain of said wheels from the engine.
3. The combination with the platform and. wheels of a car, of a sub-base havin one of its ends rigidly secured to said p atform, a transverse bar rigidly secured to said platform at the other end of the sub-base, a horizontal pivot connecting the intermediate portion of the adjacent end of the sub-base to said bar, and a reciprocating engine ad-. justably mounted on the sub-base, and a transmission mechanism for driving .certain of said Wheels from the engine.
4. The combination With the platform and wheels of a car, of a reciprocating'engine mounted on said platform, transmission mechanism includlng a belt, for driving cer- -ta1n of said wheels from the engine, sald engine being adjustable on said platform to tighten or loosen the belt, a positive lock for securing the engine to the platform against movement ineither direction in respect to the travel of said belt, and an automatic take-up device to prevent vertical play of the engine in respect to the platform.
5. The. combination with the platform and wheels of a car, of a reciprocating engine mounted on the platform, transmission mechanism including a belt, for driving certain of said Wheelsfrom the engine, said engine being adjustable on the platform to tighten or loosen the belt, a positive lock for securing the engine to the platform against movementin either direction in respect to the .travel of said belt, and yielding-clamping means for securing the engineagainst vertical movement in respect to said platform.
6. The combination with the platformand I wheels of a car, of a reciprocating engine mounted on said platform, transmission mechanism, including a belt for driving certain of said Wheels from the engine, said engine being adjustable on said platform to tighten or loosen the belt, and a combined lock and clamp for positively'securing' the engine to the platform against movement in either direction in respect to the travel. of said belt and for yieldinglyholding the same against vertical movement.
7. The combination with the platform and wheels of a car, of a. sub-base secured to said platform, a reciprocating engine mounted on the sub-base, said engine being adjustable on said platform to tighten or loosen the belt, means for securing the engine to the sub-base, transmission mechanism, mcluding a belt, for driving certain of said wheels from the engine, and means for clamping the engine to the subbase.
8. The combination with the platform and 7 wheels of a car, of a sub-base secured to said platform, a reciprocating engine mounted on the sub-base, said engine being. adjustable on said platform to tighten or loosen.

The combination with. the platform and wheels of a car, of a sub-base secured to said platform and having ways, a reciprocating engine mounted on the sub-base be-' tween said ways, transmission mechanism, includin a belt, for driving certain of said wheels rom the engine, said engine being adjustable on said platform to tighten or loosen the belt, means including a pair of longitudinally extended lock bars located under the sub-base for securing the engine between said ways with freedom for sliding movement, a clamping head adjustably secured to the short end of said bar with freedom for limited movement in respect thereto, and underlying the lock bars, and means operative on the long end of said bar to clamp the engine and lock bars on the subbase. i
