MATRIX MOLDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Passed-J3... 13, 1920.
Application filed. March 6, 1919. Serial No. 280,998.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW E. MARK- WELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fort Worth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Matrix Molding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to matrix molding devices, and the object is to provide simple devices or improvements in matrices of standard size and adaptation for use in linotype and other line casting machines for preparing the operating edges of printers slugs for holding cross-rules. Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention will be more particularlypointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application. v I Figure 1 is aside elevation of a matrix with the improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sideelevation of a matrix, showing the recesses cut in the body thereof for receiving the attachments. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the attachments. Fig. 4 is a portion of a slug on an enlarged scale, showing the slot or notch therein made by the improved matrix and showing the re taining device in one wall of the slug. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of matrix and former, showing a slight variation in the means for holding the former in place. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a matrix and former showinga variation in the former. Fig. 7 is a vertical section of the former shown in Fig. 6.
Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
For illustration of the improvements, a matrix-1 of standard size and adaptation is shown. A slot 2 of irregularconfiguration is madethrough the body of the matrix for an operating spring 3 and the-shank end A of the former. The former has a hook 5 on the lower end for engaging the spring 3. The matrix 1 has a vertical groove 6 therein for receiving and guiding the former. The former is held against displacement by a thin bar 7 which is placed in a horizontal groove 8 and soldered therein or otherwise attached thereto. The spring 3 has a shank the former will make ribs inserted in a slot 9 in the matrix and the other end of the spring is caught in the hook 5 of the forming device. The operating end of the former isthick for two purposes,- one to make the former rigid and the other to make the former thick enough to provide a curved groove 10 therein for performing the function intended. The object of the groove 10 is to cast a rib 11 on one of the walls of the slot in the slug 12. I
This invention is for use in making the slugs described in my pending application filed Oct. 2,1918, Ser. No. 256,510.
In operation, the matrix 1 is so located in the mold that a slot will be formed in the slug as the slug is cast. The former constitutes a part of the matrix for making the slot and a portion of the molten metal will fill the groove 10 in the former. When the slug is formed, it will be withdrawn from the matrix and on account of the rib 11 occupying the groove 10, the former will be drawn out with the slug until the shoulder 13 passes above or away from the matrix. The thin portion of the former will yield or bend and allow the rib 11 to pass on away with the slug. As soon as the rib 11 leaves the groove 10, the former will be drawn back into operative position by the spring 3. The upper part of the former cooperates with the matrix to form the slot 1 1 in the matrix.
In the former shown in Fig. 5, a slot 16 is made in the former and a headed brad or screw bolt 17 holds the former in place during its transverse movements.
In the former shown in Figs. 6 and 7 ,a former 18 is shown in the form of a U-shaped spring with cavities 19 in each side so that 11 in both walls of the slot in the slug. The arms of the former are dovetailed into the matrix in grooves on each side of the matrix and a bridge 20 of the matrix will prevent the former from leaving its seat. When the slug is drawn from the matrix, the arms of the former 18 will yield toward each other far enough to let the ribs 11 slip out of the cavities 19.
What IOlELiHl, is,-
1. A matrix molding device for forming slots in a slug-comprising a matrix having a vertical groove in the side thereof and a former 7 having its operating end thick enough for normally filling said groove and movable therein and provided with a curved groove in its outer face near said operating end for forming a rib on one of the vertical walls of said slot.
2. A matrix molding device for forming slots in a slug comprising a matrix having a vertical groove in the side thereof and a former having its operating end thick enough for normally filling said groove and movable therein and havin a portion of the body of the former thin for yielding over the edge of the matrix as the matrix is being withdrawn from the slug and pro vided with a curved groove in its outer face near said operating end for forming a rib on one of the vertical walls of each slot.
3. A matrix molding device comprising a matrix having a vertical groove in one side thereof, a spring metal former normally filling said groove and movable therein and provided with a third groove in 'ts outer face near its operating end, and a retractile spring connected with said former for drawing the former back to operative position.
4:. A matrix molding device for forming a slot in a slug comprising a matrix having a vertical groove in one side thereof and a slot therethrough below said groove, a former normally filling said groove and movable therein and projecting down in said slot and provided with a curved groove in its outer face near its operating end to form a rib on one of the vertical walls of said slot, a retractile spring mounted in said slot and connected with said former, and a bar mounted in the side of said matrix to prevent displacement of said former.
5. A matrix molding device comprising a matrix having a vertical groove therein in one side, a former having a thicker portion normally filling said groove for 00- operating with said matrix for forming a slot in a slug and having a curved groove in the outer face thereof for forming a rib on one of the vertical walls of said slot and having the edge of the matrix when the thicker portion is drawn from the matrix, and means for holding said former in place and for drawing the former back to normal position.
6. A matrix for forming a slot in a slug, a former countersunk therein and movable transversely thereof, means for holding said former yieldingly in its normal position and for drawing the former back to normal position after an operation, said former having a curved groove in its outer face near its operating end for making a curved rib on one of the vertical Walls of said slot, and means for preventing lateral displacement of said former.
In testimony whereof, I set my hand, this etth day of November, 1918.
ANDREW E. MARKWELL.
