Be it known that I, \VILLIAM P. RUDKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahoma, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful IIDPFOXBIDQIUJS in Genera tors, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to improvements in gas generators, adapted par ticularly for use where a constant predetermined pressure of the gas is especially desired. I have found in the art of welding that generators of known type today used for supplying gas to welding torches are more or less wasteful and unsatisfactory, mainly because the production of the gas while automatic, is subject to fluctuation to such an extent evenas to result in poor workmanship unless the operator of the torch is particularly expert in the art. In other words, as an incident to the automatic action of gas generation, whether procured through the dip or-other well known process, the pressure of the gas steadily falls from the maximum until the acetylene is brought into contact with the liquid or vice versa, and regeneration begins, whereupon there is a ripid rise in the pressure and danger of excessive heat as a result. It is mainly to overcome this difficulty that my invention has been devised and by means of which I am able to maintain what I term for the purposes of distinction a constant differential pressure suitable to the particular work to be done.
To this end my invention lies in the pro.- vision of means for controlling the pressure which is operative to bring about that association of the gas forming substances which results in the generation action.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and' claimed. Reference will ncw be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein:

Describing in detail the construction of this device, 1 designates a tank or container to receive the water utilized for the generation of the gas. It might be noted at this point that the apparatus involved is of the dip type. At the top of the tank 1 is the pressure control chamber 8 Centrally of the tank are disposed guide rods 20 between which is mounted the container-21 for the carbid, the outer surface of said container having the rollers 22 for cooperation with the rods 20 to guide the movement of said container upwardly and downwardly in the operation of this apparatus.
A discharge passage 9' extends upwardly from the central bottom portion of the tank 1 and into the central chamber 23 of the container 21, said passage passing outwardly of the tank to the storage receiver or service pipes. This passage, at
a suitable point, is provided with a cut-off valve 10 and a bypass 12 establishes communication between the pipe 12" which forms the continuation of the pipe 9 and the pressure chamber 8. In this by-pass is a cut-off valve 24 and a cator 25.
In charging the apparatus, the carbid container 21 is introduced into the tank by removal of the cover 26 and water is then poured into the tank 1*. Immediately gas generation takes place and proceeds until gas accumulates within the pressure chamber 23 suflicientlyto raise the container 21 to an elevated position out of the water, substantially as shown in the drawing. The pressure thus produced is admitted into the pressure chamber 8 to provide pressure which will act upon the exterior of the container 21. The pressure being thus provided, the valve 24'is cut off and the container 21 descends, and gas generation again takes place under automatic control and until sufficient pressure is developed in the central chamber 23 to effect the elevation of the container 21 from the Water in the tank. The pressure on the upper side of said containerbeing constant it will give a constant feeding of gas from the central chamber at the pressure originally admitted to chamber 8 in the use of the apparatus.
At the base of the container 21 is provided a flange extension for the purpose of safeguarding against the water being entirely displaced from {the casing by the pressure of the gas, and the escape of the gas about the lower end of said casing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A generator of the class described pressure indicomprising a closed liquid holding, reservoir having a pressure chamber at the upper portion thereof, a container for holding generating material movably mounted for movement in the chamber, and means establishing communication between the pressure chamber and the container whereby to convey the gas between the chamber and the container, said container being shiftable into and out of the liquid in the reservoir under the control of the pressure in the pressure chamber.
2. A generator of the class described comprising .a closed liquid holding reservoir having a pressure chamber at its upper portion, a container for holding gas generating material movably mounted for movement in the chamber and having a pressure receiving chamber, and means establishing communication between the pressure chamber of the reservoir and the pressure receiving chamber of the container whereby the pressure in the pressure chamber opcrates to control the position of the concontainer with respect to the liquid in the reservoir.
3. A gas generator of the class described comprising a closed liquid holding reservoir having a pressure chamber at its upper portion, a container for holding gas generating material movably mounted for movement in the chamber, guide means with which the container coacts, a discharge conduit for the gas in the pressure chamber, and a by-pass establishing communication between said gas discharge conduit and the movable container whereby the pressure is the container with respect to the reservoir.
4. A gas generator of the class described comprising a liquid holding reservoir having a pressure chamber at its upper portion, a container for holding gas generav ing material movably mounted within the reservoir, guide means with which the container coacts, a discharge conduit for the gas in the pressure chamber, a by-pass establishing communication between said gas discharge conduit and the movable container whereby the' pressure is operable to effect raising and lowering of the container with respect to the liquid in the reservoir, and regulatory means interposed in the conduit for controlling the admission of gas into the container.
