IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR TRAINING HORSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,689, dated October 29, 1872.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, O. S. PRATT, of Batavia, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Means for Educating Horses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of my invention showing the straps employed.

Myinvention has relation to means for teaching a pacing-horse to trot; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the ham perin g-straps hereinafter described.

The letter A of the drawing designates a strap or rope of sufficient length to pass from just under the knee of the horse over a surcingle to the gambril-joint. B represents the surcingle. O designatesa short strap secured to one end of the strap A, and adapted to be buckled around the fore leg just below the knee. The object of making this strap in a separate piece is to permit of the lengthening of the strap A to suit horses of different sizes.

But both of these straps A and C may be made I in one piece if desired. D represents a ring attached to the other end of the strap A, and to this ring are secured two short straps, E E, adapted to be fastened around the hind leg of the horse, one above and-the other below the gambril-joint.

The method of application is as follows: The strap 0, having been buckled around the fore leg just below the knee, the strap A is carried over the surcingle to the gambril of over the surcingle and crossing each other under the belly of the horse. This arrangement is indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawing, and it is evident that when the straps are properly adjusted it is impossible for the horse to take the pacing gait. He must of necessity trot.

These straps may also be used with excellent etl'ect to prevent a horse from leaping a fence and thereby getting out of an inclosure. For this purpose the adjustment is similar to that above described with the exception that the straps should not be crossed. It is evident that when the horse-rears to go over a fence or other obstruction, the straps will take his hind feet from under him and set him back in the field out of which he is endeavoring to jump. Instead of straps stout cords or ropes may be employed to connect the hind and fore legs in the manner hereinbefore mentioned.

What I claim as my invention is- The arrangement of the straps or ropes herein described when applied inthe manner specified, and for the purpose set forth. 1
