LAURENT OREVISSIER ,AND LEOPOLD LEGAMP, OF BEIMS, FRANCE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CRIMPING-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, LAURENT UREVISSIER and LEOPOLD LEoAMP, of Reims, France, have invented an Improved Apparatus for Gambering Leather, Leather Cloth, and other Fabrics, of which the following is a specification:
The characteristic features of this invention are the facility and rapidity with which two cheeks or side pieces are pressed together and again released, and the simplification or smoothing of the creases or folds which are produced on the leather or fabric. These improvements are eifected by means of two parallel cheeks, which camber or press the leather on a vertical mandrel or thin former, which is provided with a springfor distributing the power applied. The tightening or pressing together of the two cheeks and the loosening or releasing of the same are produced by means of a small fiy-wheel, which works two toothed wheels mounted on screws, which elfect the bringing together and the separating of the cheeks, between which coiled springs are fitted.
The construction of the apparatus is fully shown by the drawing hereunto annexed, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of an apparatus constructed according to this invention;
The apparatus is composed of a table or frame, a, on which are fixed a larger, 1), and a smaller column or support, 0. On the larger column b a lever, f, has its fulcrum at d, while the smaller column has jointed to it a large spring or bar, h, which is shaped 'to'correspond to the form or configuration of the mandrel or former i for the purpose of uniformly distributing the power applied, and thus produce regularity in the work while simplifying or, as it were, smoothing the creases or folds caused by the crimping or pressing. This spring has one end attached to the larger support I) at k.
. The leather to be crimped is placed over the former i and the bar h set thereon, it being detachable from one of its bearings for that purpose. This holds the leather upon the former Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,637, dated October 29, 1872.
in proper position for the action of the cheeks and prevents it being drawn to either side.
The lever f is provided at its rear end with a counter-weight, 'v, for producing equilibrium with the front portion, which has a handle, g, and carries at about its middle the two cheeks jj, which produce the cambering on the mandrel or former i, Fig. 2. The tightening up and releasing of these cheeks j j are effected with great promptitude and facility by means of two screw-bolts, an, on which toothed wheels I l are fitted, these wheels being driven by a fly wheel, m, and pinions 0 p. Coiled springs fitted on the bolts 1 a, between the cheeks j j, push the cheeks apart when the pinions l l are unscrewed or loosened. (See Figs. 3 and 4.) The mandrel or former i is firmly fixed to the table a in a, recess or cup, 9, which receives the water squeezed out of the leather. This water runs off, by a pipe, r, into a vessel be low, 8. At the weighted end of the lever f is a chain, 00, which is hooked to the table when the leather to be crimped is being put in place; and. at the front of the machine is a button, 10, on a long rod, for unhooking the chain when the parts are ready for work.
Having now described the nature of our invention and the means whereby the same may be carried into effect, we wish it to be understood that what we claim is- 1. The combination of the two cheeks j j, screw-bolts n a, toothed pinions Z Z, and wheel m with intermediate pinions to operate simultaneously the said screws 10 a, substantially in the manner set forth.
2. In combination with the cheeks j j and the former i, we claim the spring or bar h, substantially in the manner specified.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
