useful Improvements in Rail-Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the.

My invention relates to improvements in rail chairs and more particularly to the fas tening' means therefor.
An important object of this invention is to provide a rail chair including abase plate having openings adapted for'the reception of spikes and novel means for securely retaining the spikes in engagement with the base of a rail.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rail brace which may be stamped 7 from metal and cheaply produced in large quantities.
Gther objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:

The opposite end of the tongue 12 is provided with an opening 16adaptedfor the reception of a spike 17. Upon engaging the base of the rail, the head of the spike 17 is disposed within the slot 11 of the brace 10.
In applying this form of the invention, the chair is first arranged beneath the rail and the brace 10 engaged with the web and ball of the rail. Subsequently to the driving of the spikes into the openings 13, the locking tongue 12 is driven into the slot 9 and the caps 15 engaged with the spikes 14 for retaining the same in position. A spike is now driven through the opening 16 for retaining the lockingtongue in position and also for engaging the rail as indicated.
In the form of my invention illustrated in Figs. i and 5, A base plate 18 is provided with a slot 19 opening out through one end of the same. A rail brace 20 is formed integral with one end of the base plate and has its lower portion curved as indicated at 21 for conforming to the configuration of the M rail. Ihe opposite end of the base plate is provided with openings 22 adapted for receiving spikes. A locking tongue 23 is adapted to be arranged in the slot 19 and is provided with L-shaped tongues 24 adapted for engaging the heads of the spikes and retaining the same in contact with the base of the rail. 7
In the form of my invention illustrated in Fig-ad and 5, each alternate rail brace is arranged on opposite sides of the rail whereby the rail is rigidly supported.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts may be made as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A rail chair comprising a base provided with a slot opening out through one end thereof, a rail brace carried by the othel end of the base, a tongue arranged in said slot, and spike engaging caps carried by the tongue.
2. A rail chair comprising a base provided with a slot opening out through one end thereof, said base being provided at said end with spike receiving openings, a raii brace carried by the other end of the base, a tongue arranged in said slot, and spike engaging caps carried by the tongue.
3. A rail chair comprising a base provided with a slot opening out through one end thereof, said base being provided at said end with spike receiving openings, a rail brace carried by the other end of the base and having its lower portion cuiwed to conform to the configuration of the rail, a tongue arranged in said slot, and spike engaging caps carried by said tongue.
4. A rail chair comprising a base proride-d with a slot opening out through one end thereof, said base being provided at said end with spike receiving openings, a rail brace carried by the other end of the base and provided with a spike receiving opening registering with said slot, a tongue ar- "anged in said slot, and spike engaging caps carried by the tongue adjacent said first nai ied spike receiving openings, said tongue being provided with a spike receiving opening registering with said second named opening.
