JOSEPH RQ-STBIlTESKY, OF BONN E TERRE, MISSOURI.
nor-Am FURNACE.
Specification'ot Letters Patent.
Application filed February 25, 191 s. Serial No. 219,009.
To all whom it may concern: 7 4
Be it known that I, Josnrn R. STRETESKY, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Bonne Terre, in the county of St. Francois and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Hot- Air Furnaces; and I do declare the; following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
; My invention relates to improvements in hot air furnaces of the type having a single main hot air outlet from the air heating casing into a room above, and cool air, inlet means from this room into the casing.
. Heretofore, it has been possible to heat a object is to provide a novel form of damper.
number of communicating rooms by this kind of furnace, but impossible to heat others which do not communicate in some way with the one in which the register is 10- cated. It is therefore the object of my invention to so improve upon the furnace in question as to permit the heating of rooms, even though the be isolated from those into which the heat 0111 the furnace is now discharged; and in this connection a further for eontrollin the discharge of heat.
With the orego' general'object in view, the invention I'GSldBS'lIl the. novel features of constructioniand unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings which form a pa'rt of this specilication and in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective view with parts in' section showing my improved features of construction for heating a room in' the basement and. a roomabove the basement;
Fig. 2 is. a detail horizontal section 'onthe plane of the line 2- -2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a View, similarto Fig.1 but illus 'trating amod'ified form of the invention for heating rooms above the basement."
' The numeral 1 designates a furnace proper or'firebox which is surrounded by an 1 air heating casing 2 havinga main central outlet pipe 3 leading from its upper ,end to the central portion of a register 4 in the floor above. A cool air inlet pipe 5 surrounds the outlet pipe 3 and discharges at -Wall W. vA cool air pipe 9 discharges into the lower end of the casing 6 and extends through the wall Hot air is adapted to travel through both of the pipes3 and 7 and cool air enters through the pipes 5 and 9.
For controlling the discharge of hot air through the two pipes 3 and.7,.a damper 10 is pos tioned in-t e mounted at the upper side of pipe 7 as shown at '11, said damper being adapted to swing downwardly to close the pipe; 7, upwardly to close pipe 3, or to any one of a number of intermediate positions so that the escap ing. heat will be branched and directed through both pipes. The damper operates pipe 3 and is pivotally" Patented Dec. 16, 1919.
in the portion 12 of the pipe 3fand is provided with a suitable-ihamfle 13 on.the exterior of said pipe. lt-will also be understood that any preferred locking means may be provided for holding the damper in adugted position. n Fig. 3, the construction of most parts is the same as in Fig. 1, but a branch hot I air pipe 7 extends from the pipe 3 to a register 8 in a room above the furnace room and separate from the room in which the scribed.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying seen that by making certain simple improvements in a' well lmown form of furnace, I
have provided means-whereby rooms which do not communicate with the originally Y heated rooms, may, be maintained at a required temperature. This result is preferdrawings, it will be ably obtained by the construction .shown and described, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes might well be made.
I claim: I In combination, a furnace, aregister in itsnlower;end into the cool air inlet casing- 55 6 which s'urfiunds jacket 2 and supplies air to .thelatter. These features are' all of well,
- the floor bf the room abpve, an air heating casing around said furnace, at hot air pipe rising from the upper end of saidcasing to said register and communicating with the space between said casing and said furnace, a cool air inlet casing surrounding said air heating casing and communicating therewith at its lower end, and a cool air inlet pipe surrounding said hot air pipe and leading from said register into the space between the two casings; together with a branch hot air pipe communicating with said main hot air pipe and leading therefrom to another room, said branch hot air pipe extending across the space between said cool air inlet pipe and said main hot air pipe, an additionalcool air inlet pipe leading from said last named room. into the 15 space between thetwo casings, and a damper in said main hot air pipe pivoted above the entrance of said branch hot air pipe to swing across and close either of these pipes or to move to intermediate inclined positions. 20 In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
