This invention relates to the class of ment whereby the valve head may beheld` upon its seat by auxiliary means, permitting the main valve stem to be removed for the purpose of renewing the gasket or packing, a broken stem or yoke.
A further object of the invention is to permit the valve to be held on its seat, thereby permittingthe renewal'of broken or defective parts, without the necessity of cutting out the line, or inthe case of a steam power system as used on battle ships, power plants, and the like, to obviate the. necessity of putting out the furnace, reducing the steam pressure to Zero and then repairing the line, as would require that the lires be remade and the steam pressure brought .to normal with considerable expenditure and difficulty, while the present device permits the saving of time and expense, the repair being capable of being made in a very short space of time and with considerable facility.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improvedvalve having a `valve head capable of detachment from the stem while the valve casing and the valve head are provided withl coperative means in the form of auxiliary stems adapted to hold the valve 4head to its seat, independently of the main valve stem, wherebythe latter can be removed for repair purposes, as specified.
With the above and other objects in view,
as will appear as the description proceeds,
the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which. will lbe more full described erein and set forth with particularity inthe claims appended hereto.
Reference 1s had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which like reference characters indicate the corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a globe valve equipped in accordance with the invention, and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken across the valve casing on the line 2--2 of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 designates the casing of the valve, illustrated in the form of a globe valve, although it is to be -understood that the device may be applied to gate valves,vor
other types of valves.' This casing is shown provided with the inlet 11 and outlet 12, the same having the sealed closure plate or bonnet 13, through which the valve stem 14 operates. The casing is provided with a. seat 15 against which a valve head 16 is designed to seat, the stem being designed to be actuated through the medium of a handle or wheel 17 there being a suitable packing gland or joint 18 for the valve stem where it operates through the bonnet, so as to prevent the escape of steam or other fluid, while said stem is threaded through the yoke or bar 19, forming a two-point guide, as is usual in valves of this type.
In order to detachably connect the valve stem to the valve head, so as to permit the latter to be raised assisted by the action of theluid pressure from the bottom lentering through the inlet 11, the valvehead is provided with a globular socket 2.() communieating with its upper portion, and the lower end of the valve stem 'is provided withx a reduced portionhaving secured at diametrically opposite sides thereof outwardly bowed raised and lowered in the opening and closing of the valve, in the usual manner.
The valve head 16 is also provided with a beveled edge portion having diametrically opposed arcuate grooves 23 therein, and the adJacent portions. of the casing l10 are formed with lugs-24corresponding tothe lug 25 for the main valve stem. The main valve stem is threaded for operation in the lusual manner, and operating through the lugs 24 are stems 26, which may be termed auxiliary stems, since the lower ends thereof are designed 'to coperate with the recesses orgrooves 23, so as to hold the valve 16 on its seat independently of the main valve stem. The auxiliary stems are threaded at their inner ends and operate through the packing glands or bonnets 27 having lugs 28 for attachment andcorresponding to the yoke 19.
Thus, it Will be seen that by inwardly screwing the auxiliary stems, the main valve stem may be disengaged by reason of its detachable engagement with the valve head 16, thereby permitting parts to be repaired or renewed, without the necessity of shutting oithe power; The device is designed to save time and labor vin 'the boiler room or engine'room ofships, andV also other steam power plants, inconnection with globe valves, gate valves, or other types of valves,
and especially in the .case of an accident such as the blowout of a gasket of the valve or a boiler stop valve, thereby, permittingl the renewal or repair of the parts, in a very short time, without the necessity of drawing fires, cooling the boiler down and waiting until the pressure. is oli and then remaking the lires and getting up pressure after the repairs are made, such as wouldrequire a considerable length of time. The device is especially adapted to globe valves as generally used upon marine engines in connection with ships of all sorts, or othersteam power plants.' The device'is equally well 'adapted for feed valves, top and bottom4 may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, l desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure, as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention 'as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what Leanser.-
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters atent, is:
1. A valve comprising a casing having a seat and a valve head coperating therewith,
an inlet and anoutlet, a valve stem operating through said'casing and detachably engaging said head, diametrically oppo'sitely l disposed auxiliary stems engagedv through the casing at either side of the main valve stem vand coperating with the valve head to hold the same seated independently of themain valve stem, and resilient means detachably fastening the/*valve head to the valve stem.
2. A valve comprising a casing having a seat and a valve head coperating therewith, an inlet and an outlet, a valve stem operating through said casing and detachably engaging said head and diametrically oppolsitely disposed auxiliary stems engaged through the casing at either side of the main of the main valve stem, said valve head having a globular socket, and springs carried bythe valve stem detachably engaging said socket.
3. In a valve of the class described,- a casinghaving anl inlet and an outlet, a valve seat and a valve head therein having a globular socket, a valve stem for said valve having a ,reduced lower portion, springs secured upon lopposite sides of the reduced lower portion of said valve stem and bulging outwardly to detachably engage said socket, a bonnet and a yoke through which said valve stem operates,` lugs projecting inwardly from the casing at diametrically opposite points, packing glands in the casing, and4 'auxiliary stems operating through said packing glands and passing through said lugs, said valve head having opposed recesses coperating with the ends of said auxiliary stems, wherebysaid valve head can be held seated independently of the main valve stem.
