RECOIL-PAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 4, 1919. I Serial No. 321,507.
' of the character specified, adapted to be attached to the stock of a gun, to absorb the shock of the explosion, wherein the arrangement is such that the elements of the pad in absorbing shock, move directly toward each other and parallel with the axis of the gun, instead of laterally.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of one end of a un stock having the improved pad,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the pad,
Fig. 3 is a plan view looking at the inner face of the pad.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with the stock 1 of a gun, the improved pad being connected directly to the stock. The improved pad is an integral construction of soft rubber comprising an inner wall or facing 2 and an outer Wall or facing 2, which are connected at their ends by solid portions 3, and which are connected intermediate their ends by partitions a which are arranged in truss form between the walls 2 and 2, that is, the partitions a are arranged in two series, the series being inclined at angles of approximately to the horizontal, and the parti tions of one series being at right angles to those of the other series.
Each pair of alternate and intermediate partitions converge at one wall 2* or 2, and it will be obvious that when the walls are moved toward each other by pressure which tends to force them together, the yielding of the pad will be directly at right angles to the walls 2 and 2, and these walls do not tend to move laterally with respect to each other during the compression of the pad. In fact, it is difficult to move the two Walls laterally with respect to each other in any direction, while at the same time, having moved toward or from each other with sufticient ease to thoroughly cushion shock and ]ar.
If for instance, that portion of the wall 2 between any two partitions 4 is pressed toward the wall 2, it will be obvious that upward or downwardly bodily movementoi the wall will be resisted by the adjacent partitions at to those between which the compression is made.
T he improved pad may be secured to the gun in any usual or desired manner, as for instance by cementing the same to a plate of Patented Dec. 16, 19119. V
rubber which has been secured to the stock by nails 6 or the like. The outer face of the wall 2 may be roughened or corrugated if desired, as is the case with facing pads of such guns.
I claim 1. Arecoil pad for gun stocks, of rubber or the like comprising a pair of walls spaced apart from each other and integrally connected at their ends by a solid connection, the walls being connected intermediate their ends by a series of transverse partitions, the members oi one series extending at approximately right angles to the members of the other series and being alternately arranged with respect to said members, said partitions of the alternate and intermediate series converging at the side walls.
2. A recoil pad for gun stocks of rubber or the like comprising a pair of walls spaced apart from each other, and integrally connected at their ends, the walls being connected intermediate their ends by a series of transverse partitions, the members of one series extending at approximately right angles to the members of the other series and being alternately arranged with respect to said members, said partitions of the alternate and intermediate series converging at the side walls.
3. A recoil pad for gun stocks, comprising a wall for attachment to the stock, and a wall spaced apart therefrom and substantially parallel therewith, and a plurality of series of partitions connecting the walls, the members of one series being alternately arranged with respect to the members of the other series and converging with the members of the other series at their connection with the walls. 7
