To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, lilin'ron Trennr'rs, a citizen of the United States, and res dent of Detroit, \Vavne county, State of Michigan,
have invented certain new and useful. 1m-- Hydrocarbon-Motors, of-
roveinents 1n I which the-following 1s aspecification.
This invention relates to an improvement 'in hydrocarbon motors and particularly to the carburetor and air intakes thereof.
Then the air intake openings of the carbutcher- 0f a hydrocarbon motor are unprotected, a considerable amount of dirt and dust passes throughthc carburetor and into and through the motor score .the cylinders, pistons, bearings and other partsof tl1e-n1otor. One of the objects of the present invention isto provide .a novel "rotection or filter for the car- Ifbureter air intakes of a hydrocarbon motor.
Another object of the invention is to provide a readily removable air filter, the screenofiwhich can be quickly changed.
Another. object of the'invention is to provide 'a movably mounted filter together with means operable preferably trour the drivers seat forwithdrawing the filter from the carburetcr openings, when desired to thu's permit the unobstructed admission of air to the carburetor.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for banking the air up in front. of the carburetor air intakes to thereby increase the effectiveness of the latter.

The carbureter 17 comprises a. float hamber 19, a main air intake 20, and an auxiliary air intake 21.1
Arranged adjacent the carburetor is an air filter 22, which covers themouthsof the main and auxiliary air intakes 20 and 21,
and through which all air entering thev carburetermay pass. In the embodiment illustrated the filter is a funnel shaped box rec-- The top, sidestangul'ar in cross section. and front are made of, imperforate material while the lower side, which inclines from front to rear is made of a screen 23 preferably of gauze or other foraminous mate: rial. If the screen is properly cleaned or changed often enough, there will be no throttling of the air supply, but in case the screen should become clogged it may of course, be removed, or ,the filter ,lnay be withdrawn as a whole or raised from its position over the carburetor intakes.
As shown, the filter is horizontally pivoted at ill upon'the carburetor and is held down with the rear opening against the carbureter bv gravity and by a spring 25' or other suit-- Provision is also made for banking up the air under the screen to increase the cii'cctive ness of the carburetor action. One manner of carrying-this out is shown in the drawing.
5 At the rear of the motor is fixed-a vertical plate 28 secured to the cylinder blocks in any desired manner and shaped in a general way to the outline of the space between the cylinder blocks. (See Fig.2). Extending from the upper edge of the plate 28 to the front of the carburetor is a second plate 2!).suitably secured in placeand closing the top of the valley behind the carburetor. The upper edge of the plate 28 has a rolled flange designated as 30 and the rear edge of the plate 29 may be slipped into place under the flange to prevent rattling. In addition to these in closing plates there may be mounted a pair of plates 31 at the sides of the filter 22 to close the space between the filter and the sides of the cylinders. The rear plate 28 is here shown made of two similar sections hinged together at 28' to permit the easy re- .moval thereof.
26 By thus inclosing the space between the cylinders it will be seen that the air deliyercd by the fan 14 will rush rearwardly between the motor cylinders and will be banked up under the screen thus creating a 30 pressure at that point and forcing itselt'into the carbureter. I It will be understood that other forms may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the inventi0n.
8o Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is .1. The combination with a carburetor having a main air intake and an auxiliary air 40" intake, each of which has a receiving month,
an air-filtering device arranged externally iof said carburetor in position to filter the air entering both said-mouths, and means supporting said device so to perm t the 46 latter to move to and from coiiperative relation with said mouths.
2. The combination with a V-type hydrocarbon motor, .of a 'carbureter arranged in the valley of the motor said carburetor hav- 60 ing an air intake mouth arranged to receive 'air from said valley, and means arranged in said valley to divert the air passingthrough said valley intosaidmouth. v

In a V-type hydrocarbon motor, the combination with a carburetor positioned in the valley of the motor, of an air filter in front ofsaid carburetor, a hinged imperiorate'plate vertically placed at the rear of the motor, and. an imperforate cover plate horizontally placed to Enclose the portion of the valley betweenthe ninged plate and the air filter. i

In a V-type hydrocarbon motor, them combination with a carbureter positioned in the valley of the motor, of an air filter in front of said (:aibiiretei, a hinged imperferate plate vertically placed at the rear of the motor, and an imperforate cover plate libri- I zontallv placed to inclose the portion of the valley between the hinged plate and the air ilter, and removably secured to the c-yli ners.
