To all whom it may concern:

Be, it known that I, JAMns F. BUTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quinlan, in the county of Hunt and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washboards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in wash boards.

An object of this invention is to provide a board having scrubbing surface formed of transversely arranged, longitudinally twisted wires, which wires have their ends cleated to the board to prevent displacement of the same.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a board having a plurality of openings in its opposite vertical edges and wear plates secured thereto, the ends of the wires extending through the wear plates and secured against movement by keeper plates, which wear plates prevent strain placed upon the wires from being borne by the wash board proper.

A further object of this invention is to provide a board of this character which will be simple, practical, and comparatively inexpensive, and one that can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claim hereto appended.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designatesthe body of the wash board, which is constructed of wood or other suitable material, and is provided at its lower end with an inverted V-shaped notch 2, and the supporting legs 3. Formed near the upper edge of the wash board, is the usual soap supporting box 4.

The opposite vertical edges of one face of the board are recessed as at 5, and provided arranged intermediate the ends thereof, and

secured to the front face of the board 1, and

extending from the top edges thereof to a.

point spaced from the bottom thereof, is the galvanized sheet 7, which is located between the recesses 5, on the front face of the board 1. The sheet 7 is, secured to the front face of the board 1 by rivets 8 or any other suitable fastening means and prevents the scrubbing of the clothes from being made on the surface of the board 1.

Secured in the recesses 5 in any suitable manner are the wear plates 9, which plates are provided with openings 10, alining with the openings 6 in the body 1, and secured to the rear face of the body 1, and provided w1th a plurality of openings 11, are the wear plates 12, which plates have their openings alming with the openings 6 and 10 of the body, and wear plates 9. A plurality of wires rranged in pairs and twisted throughout their entire length are arranged transversely across the front face of the plate 7, and have their opposite ends extending through the openings of-the wear plate 9, body 1, and through the wear plates 12, and are bent back upon themselves to engage the rear face of the body 1 to prevent movement of the same.

The wear plates 9 and 12 and the body 1 are provided with enlarged openings 18, through which are adapted to extend the bolts 15. Keeper plates 16 are provided with openings 18 and are secured over the inner ends of the bolts and have facial engagement with the bent back ends of the wires 13, and to secure the keeper plates 16 against outward movement, there are fitted on the bolts the nuts 17, which hold the plates 16 into engagement with the bent back ends of the wire18 thereby preventing any movement of the same until desired.

The twisted wires on the front portion are arranged transversely across the plate 7 and provide a scrubbing surface which will effectively remove the dirt from the clothing when scrubbed thereover, and it can be also readily seen that the nuts 17 permit the ready removal of any one of the strands of of wires should the same become broken or otherwise worn, and the wear plates 9 and 12 bear the strain of the Wires 13 thereby preventing the same Working their Way out through the wooden body 1 i What is claimed is:

As a new article of manufacture, a Wash board including a frame having longitudinal recesses formed on its side edges, Wear plates positioned in the said recesses, said frame and Wear plates having a series of spaced registering openings formed therein, twisted wire strands extending transversely across the face of the same and having their terminals extended through said registering openings and bent angularly in rear of the inner face of the frame and into engagement,

with the frame, longitudinally extending anchor plates arranged in contact with terminals of said strands and covering said extremities, and bolts extending through the anchor plate and frame for securing said anchor plate in engagement With the terminals of the strands to prevent displacement thereof, as and for the purpose specified.
