MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO STANDARD OIL COMPANY (OF INDIANA), 0F WHITING, INDIANA: A CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
TANK-WAGON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
Application filed .Tune 9, 1919. Serial No. 302,781.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLns H. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tank-Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement inthe class of delivery Wagons, whether of the horse-drawn'or tractor types, and commonly designated tanlcwagons in the petroleum industry, wherein they are employed for dispensing along their routes'trr retail dealers, garages and consumers supplies of gasolene, kerosene, lubricating oil, and other commodities.
In the accompanying drawing, which exhibits only so much of a motor-driven tankwagon as is needed to show my improvement, the running-gear being therefore omitted, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the vehicle provided with my invention, and- Fi'g. 2 is a section on line 2-2, Fig. l.
The tank 3, of ordinary or any-desired construction-and provided with bufier-strips at 3, is strapped, as usual, on carrying bolsters 4, of which the three shown are commonly used for sup orting the tank on sidesills 5 of a truck not shown). Platforms 6, (ion the holsters extend outwardly from opposite sides of the tank near itsbase, and have stops or abutments7 rising from near their opposite ends the abutments shown being of gas-pipe and each formed of a pair of spaced vertical-legs and a cross-pisoeconnected with the upper ends of the legs by elbows 8. To the outer edge of each platlength of the each gate I its outer edge to engage chains 13 having their inner ends fastened by clips 14 to the by a hinge 9, a gate 10 having reinforcm cleats 11 on its inner face and extending su stantially throughout the tank. At equal intervals along bifurcated catches 12 project from form is connected,
upper cleats 11 for rigidly spacingfrom the I abutments the gates in their normally upright position, besides supplementing the chains in holding them against unfolding from that position.
The purpose of theplatforms with the end-abutments and gates is for carrying under confinement small packages of commodities, such as cans of lubricating oils, for supplying customers therefor from-the tankwagon. It is often required, however, to carry oil to customers in barrels of different capacities, and it is a primary object of my improvement to adapt the tank-wagon for the purpose. To that end the gates 10 are hinged, as shown and described, to adapt them to, be adjusted to extend upwardly at any desired angle to the platforms and thereby expand the space between each gate and the adjacent side of the tank to accommodate on the platforms barrels of difierent sizes and confine them between the end-abutments 7, the gates and the tank-sides; and the chains 13 are provided for readily but securely fastening the gates in adjusted position and in a manner for permitting them to be readily released and lowered to permit convenient unloading from the platform.
I claim In combination with a tank-wagon havin platforms extending from opposlte sides 0 the tank-bottoms and abutments on the platform-ends, gates hingedly connected with the outer platform-edges for adjustment to expand the s ace between each and the adj acent tank-si e, chains on the tank for engaging the gates and holding them in adusted position, and hook-and-eyc connections between the abutments and gates and rigidly spacing the gates in erect position I
