Application led December 9, 1918. Serial No. 26558.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES N. JACKSON, a citizen of the United, States of America, residing at New York, N. Y., have invented a new and useful Ledger and Statement` Posting Means, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements whereby the posting of ledger and statement is simultaneously effected, the objects of the invention being to accomplish such results in a simple and effective manner which will be adaptable'to thev present day systemsof bookkeeping.
The invention lin brief consists of a carrier designed to support both the ledger and statement sheets with a suitable-interposed transfer medium so that Ventries on the 1 ledger will be automatically transferred to the statement, provision being made for supporting the statement in such adjusted posi'- tions on the carrier to suit the preceding entries on the ledger.
The various features of the invention, advantages and methods of use will become apparent as the specification proceeds and. will be clear from inspection of the accompanying drawing, wherein the invention is shown embodied in a practical commercial form.
In said drawing Figure 1, is a face view of the complete device, with the corners of the sheet broken away to expose the sheets therebeneath.
Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the carrier element.
. Fig. 3, is a similar view of a typical form of statement sheet.
In the illustration 5 designates the ledger sheet which may be of thel form now employed in bookkeeping systems where the posting is done on typewriting machines. This-ledger sheet differs however' from the usual ledger sheet of such systems in that it is provided at the right hand margin thereof witha column 6 of suitable indices, suchas the numbers illustrated.
7 designates the statement sheet shown as conforming in general respects to the usual monthly statement but diierin like the' led er sheet, in that it is provi ed at the rig t hand margin and above the posting line 8, with a column 9 of indicia forming a unit or multiple'of the long column on the ledger sheet. In this particular illustration the, unit chosen is 10, the column of indicia on the statement sheet consisting therefore of the numbers 1 to 10.
The carrier'is shown as made up of a backing 10 and a supporting sheet 11, said supporting sheet being made fast at its upper edge to the upper edge portion of the backing and free from the backing for the balance of its length. The backing is of the same apprommate size as the ledger sheet.v
The ledger sheet is supported on the face of the carrier by means consisting in the .illustratmn of a pocket 12 extending across thelower edge l portion of the backln and deslgned to receive the entire lower -e ge of the ledger sheet and corner pockets 13 at the upper corners of the backing to recei've the upperv corners of the ledger sheet to thereby lock the ledger sheet in position on the carrier.l
Thestatement sheet vis held in various adjiustedv positions on the carrier by folding' and insertingtheupper edge portion of the. .same in one of the slits 14 provided in the the back of theledger sheet and the face of l theQstatement sheet and secured for convenience along' its upper edge tothe face of the supporting sheet 11.
As an illustration-of theuse ofthe device the last charge for the preceding month is shovvnas entered on line 5 of the ledger sheet. Consequently the next-entry 'for the current month will be made on line 6.` The new statement sheet should therefore be Ypositioned on the carrier 'so that the head of the statement sheet will register .with line 6 on the ledger sheet. This registration -or collation is automatically effected by folding the statement sheet on a line corresponding with 5 in the index column thereof as indicated by the' dotted line 16 in Fig. 3 and then inserting this folded upper portion of the statement sheet in the upper slit of the carrier. rl`his condition is illustrated in Fig. 1 from ,which it will be seen that .by these simple means the' statement sheet is accurately positioned on the carrier so that the next entry thereon will appear at the head of the sheet.= lt the last entry on the ledger sheet were on. line l5 instead oil on line o, the statement sheet would he lfolded asbefore, but in this instance, would be engaged with the second slit on the carrier which, as before described, is spaced ten lines below the irstslit. Similarly il the last ledger entry Were on line 25, the statement, folded as before, would he engaged in the third slit or twenty lines below the rst slit. rl`hese simple means thus enable practically automaticl registration oi the statement with. the ledger sheet.
The statement sheet may be of relatively light paper, such: as customarily employed. and the ledger sheet and carrier sheets may oe of somewhat heavier stock to stand the necessary Wear and tear, lont the stoclr is selected so that the device as a Whole, `while possessing a certain amount oi stidness to facilitate handling and iiling the same, will at the same time, be relatively iienihle so as to feed properly through the typevvriting machine. lt will be noted that the layers oil paper are substantially equal throughout, which causes the device to leed evenly through the typewriting machine and insures uniform printing impressions.
I claim 1. ln ledger and statement posting, a ledger sheet, a statement sheet, a carrier provided with a pocket for receiving and holding the ledger sheet position thereon and With means for holding the statement sheet in various adjusted `positions `neneath the thus supported ledger sheet and means for electing the transfer ot an impression from the ledger sheet to the statement sheet,
2. ln ledger and statement posting, a carrier provided with meansv `for supporting statement sheet in various adjusted positions and with a pocket for receiving and supporting a ledger sheet on the carrier over the thus positioned statement sheet, said carrier further having transfer means for eiiecting the transfer of an impression from the ledger sheet to the statement sheet.
3. In ledger and statement posting, a statement sheet, a carrier having a plurality of slits spaced apart certain definite units of measurement and adapted to receive the statement sheet to support the same in such various spaced positions on the carrier, a ledger sheet associated With the carrier and overlying the statement sheet, and means 'for edecting the transfer of an impression from the ledger sheet to the statement sheet beneath the saine. A
ledger and statement posting, a ledger sheet, a carrier provided With opposed pockets receiving opposite edge portions of the ledger sheet to thereby position and hold the ledger sheet on the iace of said carrier, a statement sheet, means for securing said statement sheet, in various adjusted positions beneath the ledger sheet and a transfer sheet interposed between the back of the ledger sheet and the face of the statement sheet.
5i. ln ledger and statement posting, a statement sheet, a carrier having a series orn slits arranged in certain denite spaced relation and adapted to receive the statement sheet to position the same in such several definite locations on the carrier, a ledger sheet, means tor supporting-said ledger sheet in position on the carrier over the statement sheet and means iior effecting the transfer of an impression from the ledger sheet to the statement sheet 6. A combination like that setorth in claim 5, wherein the ledger sheet is provided with a column of indicia, the spacing of the slits in the carrier is in the order of v certain definite units of said columnand the statement sheet is provided with a column of indicia equivalent to one ofsaid units of spacing. i
7. Combined ledger and statement posting means, comprising a ledger sheet, a statement sheet, a carrier having means for snpporting said statement sheet in various ad- `jnsted positions thereon, said carrier having a pocket extending across the lower edge thereof to receive the lower edge of the ledger sheet and corner pockets at the upper edge thereof to receive the upper corners oit said ledger sheet and means for eecting transl-er or impressions from the ledger sheet to theJ statement. sheet.
8. ln ledger and statement posting, a carrier having a series of slits spaced in certain deiinite relation and adapted to receive a statement sheet to position the same in such various locations on the carrier, and transfer means on the carrier for eecting the transfer oit an impression troni an overlying ledger sheet te' a statement sheetthus positioned on the carrier.
