LATCH FOR earns AND THE LIKE.
ipeciflcation of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
Application filed ilbfll 11, 1917. Serial No. 161,172.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit ltnown-that I, JOHNTHOMAS Main, subiect of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Main Road, Khan'darlah, near the city of Wellington, injthe Dominion of New Zealand, have invented a new and useful Ini pavement in Latches for Game and the li e; and I do hereby declare the Toll-owing to be a full, clear; anti exact desert tionof'thesaine.
Thi invention relates to latches for gates and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a latch which willbe certain in its action and simple in construction.
In this invention a aivoted gravity catch is so constructed that the' lockingpart therek of may be lifted for the'pnrpose of opening the-gate by operating-a leverfwhie'h has a cam'aetion and with which the catch inter locks. Both the lever and the catch revert tothe closed position by g vity. A further featiz're is the construction otthe lever in such a way that the action of closing'the gate by movingtlre striker past the catch br' s the striker into contact with an arm of t e lever hereinafter termed a trigger whereby'the catch is, incle emlently' oTthe action of gravity, com;ilete 3 closed through the action of thelever. When the lever is opera-ted for the purpose of ope'nin the gate this ar angement cause the stricer'to be carried reward beyonil the locking-position striker'froni the eatchbut also' pushiir the gate open. Ifidesired"tle"l evermay be upperateclf by a push roehopsr'a ting against the trigger whereb the gate-maybe" opened i from the outsi ea Proi isionfis' also fniade fen loekingthe (latch in a closed fpositiowhy means of a separate rock:

eferrin to the drawings, 1 is the frame, 2 is the catch which is pivoted near the front and bottom of the frame,3 is the lever which is pivoted near the rear of the frame, and at is the striker.
The frame 1 is made with a portion of the front cut away to form the shoulder 5 upon which the lever 3 rests when the latch is closed. Holes are bored in'the frame to receive rivets Band 7 and holes 8 are bored in the flanges 9 ofthe frame to receive screws for fixing the latch to the post.
The catch 2, is pivoted on the rivet and is formed with a projection 10 shaped as shown. This projection 10fits intofa recess 11 in the lever 3. The lever 3is pivoted on the rivet. 7 and is formed with a projection- 12 which fitsa recess 13 and operatestheren with a calm action for the purpose ofopenmg the catch 2.
against the locking edge 14 of the catch brings the catch down to. its locked position apart from gravity. The catch has also a the gate open when the lever 3 is lifts Thecxten'ded arm 16 is so shaped asto ong' ge 'the catch 2 and limit its revolutionin an npware direction; f
In operation when it is desired to open the gateaheilever 3 is emma by rinsing the l-lS' action brin the The cam faces are so shaped that the pressure of the-striker working-gens to the position showman Fig.

In fi there isshown aanethoci of eratin" he" latch by mean-s01? a splin he catch an Fiifted clear of the sti iiter awhile the trigger 17 has pnshel screwed upon the outer end of the rod while a coil spring 22 is in compression between the button and the end of a sleeve 23 as clearly shown. This slprin normally allows the latch to remain c ose Upon resslng the button 21, the end of the rod pus es forward the trigger l7 raises the catch and throws the striker clear of the locking portion of the catch.
A shoulder 25 is formed on the to of the lever so as to be co-incident with t 1e slots 26 in the frame when the latch is closed. The bolt of a separate lock or other device inserted in the slots 26 behind the shoulder 25 will prevent the revolution of the lever 3 and thus lock the device.
The striker a is preferably offset or deformed to clear the trigger 17 when the gate is closed as clearly indicated in Fig. 3 and is fixed by screws in holes 27.
lVhat I claim is 1. In a latch, a pivoted gravity catch, a striker adapted to operate said catch upon its closing movement, a pivoted gravity lever having at its rear end a downwardly extending lever against which the striker engages, cam faces upon the upper edge of said catch, and cam faces upon the lower edge of said lever interlockin with said cam faces of said catch in error a inafiner that the movements of said catch and said lever are synchronous, substantially as described.
2.
