This invention relates to governors and particularly devices of this character which are adapted to operate by centrifugal action to retard the speed of a revoluble shaft when it exceeds a predetermined limit.
The invention consists primarily of a member revoluble with a rotating shaft, having pivoted thereto weighted arms, havadapted to bear against the inner faces of diametrically disto be moved radially into contact with the wall of a housing for said revoluble memare moved outwardly about their pivots by centrifug 1 action due to the excessive speed of said rotating shaft.
The invention further consists of certain novel features of construction and arrange 'ment of parts which ,Wlll be fully understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims to be hereinafter given.
For the purpose of illustrating the inven tion, one preferred form thereof is illustrated in the drawings, this form having been found to give satisfactoryand reliable results, although it is to be understood-that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and that the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities "as herein shown and described except as required by the scope of the appended claims.

In the drawings, 10 is a fixed support having a bearing 11 for a revoluble shaft 12 and provided also with a cylindrical chamber 123 concentric to the axis of said shaft 12.
The shaft 12 has a disk 1% secured thereto,
, and revoluble therewith, said disk closing the open end of said chamber 18.
The disk 14 is provided with two diametrically disposed grooves 15 and a central hub 16 from which said grooves 15 radiate. At the outer end of each groove 15 is a projecting stop member 17.
In each groove 15 is positioned a rib 18 .of slidable friction member 19 the outer end of which is posed friction members which are adapted" provided with a broad pad 20 the outer face of which is curved to fit the cylindrical wall of the chamber 18.
The inner faces 21 of the pads 20 are perpendicular to the grooves 15 and form bear- 26 extending from the outer end of the pad 20 to a, point substantially midway the length of said slidable member.
In each recess 26 is disposed a helical one end of which bears against the inner end of the recess 26 and the opposite end of which bears against the projecting stop'member 17. The springs 27 normally retain the inner ends of the slidable members 19 in contact with the hub 16.
The levers 22 are provided with weights 28 on their outer ends and intermediate the of said levers are cam shaped projed tions 29, each bearing against the inner fiat face 21 of a pad 20.
Under normal conditions there will be slight clearance between the friction pad 20 and the cylindrical wall of the chamber 13.
When the shaft 12 begins to rotate at an excessive speed, the centrifugal action will throw the weights 28 outwardly and the outward movement of the projections 29 will cause the pads 20 to be forced into frictional contact with the cylindrical wall of the It is obvious that the faster the shaft 12 rotates, the greater will be the frictional contact between the pads 20 and the cliain ber wall.
In order to increase the force imparted to the slidable member 19 when it is being moved into engagement with the chamber wall, the projection 29. is located substantially midway between the outer end of the lever 22 and its pivot pin or stud 23.
By providing the slidable member 19 with a rib 18 positioned in the groove 15, the movement of said slidable member is always in a straight path radial to the axis of the shaft 12.
By moving the friction members 19 in a radial path, the bearing surface of the pads 20 coacting with the chamber iwallwill always wear evenly and consequently the entire surfaces thereof will impinge upon said wall under all conditions and a better frictional contact is thereby assured.
By constructing the governor in the manner shown and described, all of the operating parts may be confined in very small chambers and great leverage may be attained.

It is believed that the operation and many advantages of the invention will be readily understood without further description.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, a cylindrical housing closed atone end; a revoluble shaft; a circular disk thereon positioned within the open end of said housing and having oppositely disposed radial grooves in one face; friction members slidably mounted in the grooves of said disk and adapted to coact with the cylindrical wall of said housing; and pivoted weighted members for actuating said slidable members.
2. In a device of the class described, a cylindrical. housing closed at one end; a revoluble shaft; a circular disk thereon positioned within the open end of said housing and having oppositely disposed radial grooves in one face; friction members slidably mounted in the grooves of said disk and adapted to coact with the cylindrical wall of said housing, said friction members each having a longitudinal recess on its inner face; springs in said recesses for normally retaining said members free from contact with the chamber wall; and pivoted weighted members for actuating said slidable members.
