Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 19, 1919. Serial No. 297,992.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SEWARD W. Hnoox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Zeeland, county of Ottawa, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Cabinet-Phonographs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cabinet phonographs. I
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved cabinet phonograph, in which the horn is disposed above the reproducer so that the sound from the tone arm travels upwardlyto the horn.
Second, to provide an improved cabinet phonograph in which the turn table is mounted on a supporting member to be adapted to be extended or withdrawn from the cabinet, to facilitate the operation of the machine.
Third, to provide an improved phonograph having these advantages which is simple in structure and very convenient to operate.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a front perspective view of a structure embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. II is a detail front perspective view with the cabinet open and the supporting member for the turn table, tone arm and motor in its extended position.
Fig. III is a detail side elevation of the cabinet in vertical section, the parts being broken away to better show the structural details, the supporting member being shown in its inner or retracted position.
Fig. IV is a detail side elevation of th parts shown in Fig. I, with the supporting 30 member in its extended or outer position,
parts being broken away to show the structural details.
Fig. V is a detail horizontal section on a line corresponding to line 5-5 of Fig. III. 5 Fig. VI is a detail side elevation showing a latch, or detent, for the crank in its disengaged position.
In the drawing, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, I provide a cabinet 1 having a door 2 hinged at 3. This door is provided with an upper. section 4, hinged to the door 2 at 5 to be swung down thereon as shown in Fig. II. The top 6 is hinged at 7, but in ordinary operation of the machine it is not necessary to open the top. A slotted link 8 is pivoted to the top at 9 and engages with a pin 10 to support the top in its open position.
A drawer-like supporting member '11 is slidably mounted within the cabinet to be extended or withdrawn therefrom or collapsed therein. It is only necessary to open the door section 4 to permit the withdrawal of the supporting member. The details for slidably mounting the supporting member are not illustrated as suitable sliding drawer means are well known.
The motor 12 is mounted within this supporting member and the turn table 13 mounted on the top thereof, so as to be accessible for placing records thereon when the supporting member is in its extended position.
The crank 14 of the motor is disposedthrough the horizontal slot 15 in the side of the cabinet. A latch, or keeper, 16, is notched at 17 to engage the crank when the support is in its extended and retracted positions. This latch 16 is pivoted at 18 and serves as a cover for the slot.
In the structure illustrated, the supporting member has upwardly extended side pieces 19 carrying a top cross piece 20. The tone arm 21 is mounted on this cross piece. A horn 22 is mounted in the cabinet above the supporting member with its bell at the rear of the grid 23. The front end of the horn is pivotally supported at 24, while its rear end is yieldingly supported by the spring 25.
When the supporting member is in its extended position, the top piece 20 slides under the rear end of the horn, raising it slightly, and bringing the tone arm opening 26 of the cross piece into register with the sound opening 27 of the horn. The horn is provided with stop bar 28 coacting with cross piece of the supporting member, and with beveled lugs or fingers 29 which engage under the top cross piece drawing the horn down thereon, or seating the horn on the cross piece. The horn has a facing 30 to insure a good joint and also to serve as a bufler.
With this arrangement of the parts, the horn is disposed relative to reproducer mechanism so the sound will travel upwardly, which produces better results than where it is forced to travel downwardly to the horn.
' Further, the structure may be conveniently operated and this without the necessity for opening the top 6, which permits of the cabinet being used as a table or stand.
In the structure illustrated, the door 2 has shelves 31 mounted thereon for holding the records the records being swung out when the door is open so as to be readily accessible.
The tone may be modified or dampened by the adjustment of the supporting member to partially close or cut off the throat of the tone arm, that is, the support may be justed so that there is a restricted delivery from the tone arm to the horn.
I have illustrated and described an embodiment or adaptation of my improvement which I consider will be understood clearly, although various of the parts are shown conventionally, as structural details thereofwill form no part of this invention.
I have not attempted to illustrate or describe the various modifications or adaptations, as I believe that the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cabinet, a slidable supporting member adapted to be extended from said cabinet and provided with upwardly extended side pieces and a top cross.
piece at the rear, a turn table mounted on the top of said supporting member, a motor disposed within said supporting member, a tone arm mounted on said top cross piece of said supporting member, and a horn disposed in said cabinet above said supporting member, said horn being pivotally supported at its front end and yieldingly supported at its rear end and rovided with a stop member coacting wit said top cross piece of said supportin member when it is extended and having a eveled lug engaging the under side thereof to seat the horn thereon, said cross piece having a tone arm opening registering with the hornwhen the supporting member is in its extended position.
2. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cabinet, a slidable supporting member adapted to be extended from said cabinet and provided with upwardly extended side pieces and a top cross piece at the rear, a turn table mounted on the top of said supporting member, a motor disposed within said supporting member, a tone arm mounted on said top cross piece of said supporting member, and a horn disposed in said cabinet above said supporting member, said cross piece having a tone arm opening registering with the horn when the supporting member is in its extended position.
3. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cabinet, a supporting member adapted to be extended from said cabinet and provided with upwardly extended side pieces and a top cross piece at the rear, a turn table and a motor carried by said supporting member, a tone arm mounted on said top cross piece of said supporting member, a horn disposed in said cabinet above said supporting member, said horn being yieldingly supported, and means for seating said horn on said cross piece When-said supporting member is in its extended position, said tone arm registering with the horn when the supporting member is in its extended position.
4. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cabinet having a horizontal slot in one side wall, a supporting member adapted to be extended from said cabinet, a turn table and a motor carried by said supporting member, a crank for said motor disposed through said slot in the side of the cabinet, a latch engaging said crank when said supporting member is in its inner and outer positions, a tone arm carried by said supporting member,and a horn disposed in said cabinet above said supporting member, said tone arm registering with the horn when the supporting member is in its extended position. v
5. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cabinet, a supporting member mounted in said cabinet to be extended therefrom, a turn table and a tone arm on said supporting member, and a horn in said cabinet with which said tone arm is operatively associated when the supporting member is in its extended position.
