lBe it known that 1, GEORGE L. SoHEEn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county ot Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certa-1n new and useful Improvementsv in Electrical Connections, of. which the following is a specification. l
My invention relates to improvements in electrical connections especially designed for use in connection with electric lamps.
The object of my invention is the production of a connection of the character mentioned through the medium of' which an electric lamp may be so mounted as to prevent surreptitious removal of the same, and whereby' at the same time, when desired, the lamp maybe disconnected.
A further object-is the provision of an electrical connection which will be of simple construction and efficient in use.
Other .objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompan ing drawing forming a part-'of this speci cation, and in which,

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing, co'n'iprises a metallic housing or shell 1 in the rearward end of which is mounted a cylindrical block 2 of insulating material. Provided at the rearward side of block 2 are screws or binding posts 3 and 3 for connection with the conductor wires il and at cooperating therewith. Said conductor wires enter through a conduit 5 which leads from the rearward end of the casing 1. The screws or binding posts 3 and 3 arc connected through the medium of bars 6 and 6 of conducting material with annular ball races 7 and 7 respectively which are mounted in the member 2. y v i Arranged in the forward end of housing 1 is a rotatable metallic socket 8 screwthreaded for the reception of the usual screw-threaded plug ofl a conventional electric lamp. The rearward end 9 'of socket 8 is enlarged and' formedwith anannular VSpecifcation of Letters Patent.

lWith the construction thus far described, itwill be seen that the socket will be freely rotatable in the housing l so that in order to permit of a lamp being threaded into said socket, it will be necessary to arrest the movement thereof,4and also, after a lamp has been secured in said socket, it will be impossible to unscrew the same, without rotation of said socket being arrested. Also, it will be seen, that although the socket is freely rotatable inthe housing l, a permanent electrical connection is established between said parts, the threaded terminal 8 of the socket being connected through the ball race 7, the balls arranged in the latter and bars 6 with the screw or binding posts 3 and the stem 13 of the member 10', which constitutes the other terminal of the socket, being connected through the 'ball race 7, the balls arranged in the ball race and bars 6 with the screw or post 3.
In order to arrest movement of the socket, a pin 14 is slidably mounted in a laterally projecting bearing portion 15 on the housing 1. The inner end of the pin 14 is adapted, upon depression of said pin, to enter a circumferential groove 16 formed in the member 11 and engage with either one of the two projections or lugs 17 projecting into the groove 1G asclearly shown in Fig. 2. It is of course apparent that when the pin 14 is depressed into the groove 16, upon attempted rotation of the socket 8, one or the other of the lugs 17 will be brought into contact with said pin 14 and thus the latter will serve to arrest movement of said socket. Said pin 14 isnormally held at its outer terminal movement or in inoperative posi-V tion by means of a helical` compression` spring 18. l
Threaded in the bearing 15 of pin 14 is a sci-ew 19 adapted to engagey at its inner end with said pin in order to lock the same against depression. The screw 19 is employed after a lamp has been threaded into the socket in order to prevent removal of the lamp, it being clear that removal of the lamp will be impossible where depression of said pin isnot permitted inasmuch as it is im. possible to remove the lamp without arresting rotary movement of the socket. With this arrangement it will be seen that after the screw 19 has been turned to operative position, removal of the lalnp may be effected only after said screw has been unscrewed to release the pin let. lf desired a sealing strip 2Ol of paper or other suitable material may be arranged about the portion l5 covering the screw 19 in order to prevent access thereto. vWith this arrangement, access to the screw will .be possible only upon breaking of the seal 20.
While l have illustrated anddescribed the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eHect, this is capa-ble of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modications as come within the scope of the appended' claims.
Having described my invention what l. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. ln a device of the class described, the combination of a housing; an electric socket rotatably mounted within said housing and having electrical connection therewith; man ually operable means for holding saidl socket against rotation; means for locking said last mentioned means against depression; and a seal for preventing access to said locking means, substantially as described.
.2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a housing; an electric socket rotatably mounted in said housing and having electrical connection therewith; a spring held depressible pin adapted, upon depression, to arrest rotary movement of said socket; and a manually adjustable screw for locking said pin against depression, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a housing;`an elec-tric sockety arranged in said housing; conductor elements on said housing and said socket; a plurality of series of rolling bearing members interposed between said housing and socket whereby the latter is freely rotatable in said housing, said conductors on said members having electrical connection through said bearing members; and means for holding said socket against relative ro tary movement in said housing, substantially as described.

' 5. ln a device of the class described, the combination of a housing, an electric socket rotatably mounted within saidl housing and having electrical connection therewith, said socket having an axial extension within said housing provided with arcuate grooves and lugs separating the ends of said grooves, a radially disposed pin mounted in said housing and adapted upon depression to engage in one of said grooves to lock said socket against rotation andmeans for normally holding said pin in retracted position, suhstantially as described.
6. ln a device of the class described, the combination of a housing, an electric 'socket rotatably mounted within said housing and having electrical connection therewith, said socket having an axial' extension' within said housing provided with arcuate grooves and lugs separating the ends of saidvgrooves, a radial bearing sleeve on said housing, a depressible pin slidably mounted therein and adapted when depressed to engage in one of. said slots, yieldable means for normallyi holding said pin retracted and means extending through said sleeve' and engaging said pin to prevent the same from being depressed, substantially as described.
7. ln a device of the class described, the combination of a housing, an electric socket rotatably mounted within said housing and having electrical connection therewith, said socket having an axial extension within said housing provided with arcuate grooves and lugs separating the ends of said grooves, a radial bearing sleeve on said housing, a depressible pin slidably mounted therein and adapted when depressed to engage in one of said slots, yieldable means for normally holding said pin retracted, means extending throu gh said sleeve and engaging said pin to prevent the same from being depressed, and means covering the last mentioned means to prevent access thereto, substantially as de scribed.
