To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. MQELHINNY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a description.

My invention belongs to that general class of devices known as tables and particularly to a combined folding table and kit carrier for use by paper hangers, decorators andthe like, but it may of course be used by mechanics engaged in other trades in which it may be found applicable. The invention has among its objects the production of a device of the kind described that is simple, convenient, compact, rigid, durable, attractive and satisfactory. It has particularly among its objects the production ,of an eX- tremely rigid and convenient table of the desired size and height that may be folded in a small space for convenience in transporting and at the same time serve as a satisfactory carrier for the meohanics tools or kit or portion thereof. Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein given.

To this end my invention consists in the novel constructlon, arrangementand combination of parts herein shown and described,

and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

The leg parts 11 are made substantially of a length to fit in the top parts between the ends 4 and 5, and of a width or depth not to project beyond the sides 3. However, I prefer not to attach the legs 11 directly to the top, as to do so in order to have the top. face of the table the desired distance from the floor, the table top partswould have to be of a length greater than is ordinarily desired by the paper hanger and greater than would be convenient in transporting the device. I therefore hinge or pivotally secure the leg parts 11 to the table parts by means of extensions or links 15, which are pivotallysecured at 16 to the legs at their upper ends and at 17 to brackets carried on the table topparts as shown secured to the sides 3. The parts 11 and15 form substantially folding legs which @may be folded against the top parts. In Fig. 3 is a top plan vlew of the table open points 17 I provide brace members 21-22.

As shown, members 21 are pivotally secured at 23 to the legs 11, and members 22 pivotally secured at 24; to the sides 3, the two members orlegsat each side being pivotally secured together at 25, a stop 26, however, limiting the pivotal movement. In Fig. 41 the legs at one end of the table are shown in folded position by the full lines and partially folded by the dotted lines, while in Fig. 1 on one side they are shown completely folded and on the opposite sides partially folded.

table. In Fig. 3 they are shown by the full lines at the ends ofthe table and by the dotted lines at the sides of. the table. Heferring particularly to Figs. 1, 3 and 6,.the extension parts 28. are provided with. the cleats 29, which tend to stiffen the parts and which are extended as at 80 to form supporting members which may be inserted in holes or openings 31 in the sides orfree ends of the table top parts. To secure-the extension parts in. the table when closed, as well as to carry them when not desired for use when the table is open, I arrange the same so that each extension part is carried on one pair of legs. Referring particularly to Figs. 6 and 7, the connecting bars or

12 and 13 are arranged at an angle to each other and the adjacent edges beveled as shown at 32, in Fig. 7 The cleats 29 are also beveled as at 33' and arranged so that they are engaged withthe braces 12and18 when the extension part 28 is positioned substantially as shown in the figures. If, however, part 28 is moved in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 6, the cleats 29 will become disengaged from the cleats or

12 and 13 so the extension part may be readily moved and positioned as desired. 7

Where the extension parts are arranged at the side of the table as shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 8 and. it is desired to bridge over the space between the extensions, an extension 35 is provided. This is ordinarily maintained in place on one of the top parts the cleat 36 and the button 37 or equivalent means for the purpose. In order that the extension part 35 may be flush with the extensions 28, I prefer to form a shoulder 38 on the extensions 28, upon which the extension 35 may rest.- In case it is not desired to provide extensions similar to 28 for use at both the sides and ends at the same time, I provide the extensions 39, shown most clearly in Figs. 6 and 9, which maybe fitted intothe holes or openings 31 and serve as extensions. The table is of extremely light weight and very compact,- and while the table parts are comparatively short as compared with the height of the table from the floor, yet the legs may be entirely fold ed within the top parts allowing ample room on the inside for the tools and implements.- The device is particularly intended for and found most convenient for use in cities where travel on street cars or similar conveyance is frequently required; In some cases it is not permittedto take a board on a car greater than six feet in length, while it is ordinarily desired to use at least a seven foot board'or longer. My device fulfils all of the requirements of the paper hanger, and in addition he does not have to carry about board supports, or as they are termed horses, which are usually cuinbersome to carry. In fact with my device. he ordinarily does not have to carry a grip or suit case for his tools and clothes inaddition to the table.

Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention, hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown anddescribed or uses mentioned.

What ll claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is V 1. In a table of the kind described and in combination, a top consisting of a plurality of parts arranged end torend and hinged together at the meeting ends, a pair of legs arranged at the free end of each part, the legs being adapted to be folded on the top and when the legs are in supporting position, the distance from the table top to the free ends of the legs being greater than the I have not considlength of the top part, each leg comprising a main rigid leg section and a short upper extension pivotally secured at one end to the upper end of the main leg section, and at its upper end to a part of the table top, the main leg sections constituting the greater part of the legs and being of a length less than the length of the table part, said main leg sections extending vertically when in supporting position.

In a table of the kind described and in combination, a top consisting of a plurality of parts arranged end to end and hinged together at the nieeting ends, a pair of legs arranged at the free end of each part, the legs being adapted to be folded on the top and when the legs are in supporting position, the distance from the table top to the free ends of the legs being greater than the length of the top part, each leg comprising a main rigid leg section and a short upper extension pivotally secured at one end to the upper end of the main leg section, and at its upper end to a part of the table top, the

" main legs sections constituting the greater part of the legs and being of a length less than the length of the table top, said main leg sections extending vertically when in supporting position, and means carried by the top parts and slidably engaging the rigid main leg sections for maintaining the same in vertical snpportingposition.

3. In a table of the kind described and in con'ibination, a top consisting of a plurality of parts arranged end to end and hinged together at the meeting ends, a pair of legs arranged at the free end of each part, the legs being adapted to be folded on the top and when the legs are in supporting position, the distance from the tabletop to the free ends of the legs being greater than the length of the top part, eachleg comprising a main rigid leg section and a short upper extension pivotally secured at one end to the upper end of the main leg section, and at its upper end to a part of the table top, the main leg sections constituting the greater part of the legs and being of a length less than the length of the table part, said main leg sections extending vertically when in supporting position, and means on the upper ends of the main leg sections to limit the unfolding movement ofrthe main leg sec tions relatively to their upper extensions.

In a table of the kind described and in combination, a top consisting of two parts arranged end to end and hinged together thereat, a pair of legs arranged at the free end of each top part, cross bars connecting the legs of each pair, and detachable top part extensions, said extensions provided with means for detachably securing the same to the cross bars of the legs.

5. In a table of the kind described and in combination, atop consisting of two parts arranged end to end and hinged together thereat, a pair of legs arranged at the free end of each top part, cross bars connecting the legs of each pair, means for securing the legs to the top parts at points spaced from the free ends of the top parts whereby the legs may be folded against the top parts on the under side thereof, and detachable top part extensions, said extensions provided with means for detachably securing the same to the cross bars of the legs.

6. in a table of the kind described and in combination, a top consisting of two parts arranged end to end and hinged together thereat, a pair of legs arranged at the free end of each top part, spaced cross bars con necting the legs of each bar, a detachable top part extension, and means on said extension and the cross bars of one of the pairs of legs for detachably securing said extension to said cross bars.

7. In a table of the kind described and in combination, a top consisting of two parts arranged end to end and hinged together thercat, a pair of legs arranged at the free end of each top part, spaced cross bars connecting the legs of each pair, said cross bars bein arranged to extend at an angle to each other and being provided with beveled faces, detachable top part extensions, said extensions being provided with beveled faces, the detachable top part extensions being adapted to be detachably held between the cross bars of the pairs of logs, the beveled faces of the top part extensions cooperating with the beveled faces of the cross bars.
