To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN R. l/VHrrn,
Va citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVaterbury, in the county-orp New Haven and State of Connecticut, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in` Buttons7 of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in buttons and particularly to that type of button which is employed with a staple which is adapted to pierce its way through an imperforate base and be guided in its upward movement by an anchor located in said button and to impinge or flatten against the anchor or. die to thereby tightly loci: the prongs of the staple in the button and also prevent-the top plate from heilig marredV or otherwise pierced byV the said staple.
The invention relates generally towthat type of button for which separate applica tions haveV been executed by` me .of even` date herewith One of the ojbjectsof the present invention is to provide a button provided with an anchor, which anchor "in this instance also comprises'an anvil or die, so that the said anchor and anvil are rigidly heldin position within the button. y v
-Another object of my invention is to provide a novel form ofanchor which in this instance comprises a cup or shell portionin which is placed avdie to correctly position the prongs of the staple in their upwardmovement into the button andalso to cause the ends of the staple to deiect whenthey reach their limit of upward movement, and substantially lock in thedie. Still another object of my invention is to provide a button comprising a body portion, a top plate, a shell, and a die within said shell, which shell may be pressed around the die before 'being` placed in the buttonrthe shell and die Vforming .the4 anchor, and

invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Referring now to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a sectional view or' the button, with the anchor portion, however, being in elevation, and the staple that is used in con` junction with the button also being in elevation;

Referring now to the drawings which show the improvement on an enlarged scale, it will be seen that the invention consists of a button having the body portion 1 and the downwardly extendingl hub 2 in the form of a'hollow shell. portion 1 isslightly lared as at 3, over which is to be passed a top plate a; which is designed to be wedged .tightly over the iiared edge 3 after the anchor is placed in the button. The base of the hub is provided with a slight central depression 5 and an annular groove or ringV 6 surrounding said depression.
The purpose of the depression 5 and the annular as viewed from the bottom) depression 6 is for the purpose of correctly directing the prongs 7 of a staple S when the same are to be forced through the cloth 9 and into the button. v
A novel form of anchor is shown which comprises a circular shell or socket 10" (see Fig. 4) which is slightly less in diameter than the diameter of the hub ot the body portion. Fitting snugly within this shell 10 is a die l1 which comprises a shank 12 which .is enlarged as at 13 where it merges with the top portion 14. This top portion is previded with an e'tttwardly and down The upper edge of the body wardly yetemliug ,flange for the reception of the prongs 7, when forced into the same.
Aiter this die has been placed into the shell 10, the side walls of the shell are forced inwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. G, thereby tightly holding the die in its correct po sition. Furthermore, the walls of the shell act as a guide for the prongs of thestaple when forced upwardly, as shown in Fig. E2..
After the anchor is asseinbled the same will be forced into the hub 2 of the button, asshown in Fig. 2, and the top plate then wedged over the flared edge 3, as heretofore mentioned.
Vvlhen it is desired to fasten the button i to the cloth, the prongs T of the staple will vthereby tightly securing the button, through the base plate and anchor to the cloth.
in Figs. 7 and 8 I have shown a slightly modified forni, in this instance doing away with the shell 1G and using a die 16, somewhat similar to the die 11 but having its outwardly and downwardly extending flanged wall 17 extending further inwardly, as at 18. 1t will be understood that this'die may be made by iirst taking a rivet and Y forcing the flange 17 straight downwardly,
and then inwa-trdly until it assumes the position clearly shown in Fig. 7. A top plate il) shown, and a body portion 20 oi the button, and the flared side portion 21, and the base 22 isiormed exactly as the base is of the preferred form. 1n other words, the only difli'erence in the two forms is that the shell 10 is dispensed with and the downwardly extending flange 17 is greater' in width so that it may be pressed inwardly to assume the positionlS shown in Fig. 7.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a button that provides a number of points of contact between the prongs of the staple and the button, thereby tightly and rigidly holding the button in its position, and wherein the anchor and die are also tightly held with respect to each other and with respect to the body portion oit' the button. Also l have provided a button whereby there is no danger' of' the prongs after perforafing the base of the hub becoming (leflccted, but on, the other hand by iii'ox'ficliilg the anchor as above described the prongs `of the staple will 'be correctly i 1 ,ssaber guided throughout their entire passage and to their final position in the anchor of the button. Also by forming the anchor as shown, less metal of a higher quality is needed for the die than" is generally used' Having thus described and explained my i invention, 1 `claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A button comprising a body portion provided with a downwardly extending hub having an imperforate base provided with an annular groove and a central depression;
an anchor fitting within the hub and provided with a downwardly extending shank, a shell forming a part of said anchor, the lowermost edges thereof located above the imperforate base and below the top portion of the anchor; and a top plate secured to said body portion. Y
2. A button comprising a body portion provided with a hub and an imperforate base plate, said base plate being provided with a central depression and an annular ring surrounding the same; an anchor located within said hub portion and comprising a shell; a die iitting within saidshell and the lower ends koi" said shell forced downwardly ovei1 said die7 said die provided with a central depending shank and of such diameter as to leave aspace between the side walls of the shell and said shank; and a top plate secured to said body-portion.
3. A button comprising a body portion having a hub provided with an imperforate base; an anchor in said hub, said anchor comprising a circular shell and a die provided with a downwardly depending shank, and said shell being bent to inclose and tightly hold said die, the lower edge of said shell being spaced from said depending shank, and a top plate on said button.

5. A button comprising a body portion provided with a hub, a depression formed in the bottom of said hub, and an annular ring also surrounding said depression; an anchor inv said hub comprising a shell, and

anda flange around the upper portion of said die, the ends of the shell being spaced from the dependent shank and extending to a point below the flange portion of said die, and a top plate secured to the body portion for holding the anchor in position. `G. A button comprising a body "portion having a hub provided with a base plate, said base plate being iniperforate and provided with an annular groove and central depression; an anchor having a die therein located in said button; a staple for entering the imperforate base plate, and means formed around the upper portion of said die for guiding and locking the prongs of said staple when forced into said button.
7. A button comprising in part an anchor, said anchor comprising a shell, a die litting within said shell, and said shell bent to tightly hold said die in position, and-said die provided with a downwardly7 extending centrally located shank.
8. A button comprising in p-art an anchor, said anchor comprising a shell, a die itting within said shell and the side walls of said shell being bent inwardly to retain the said die in said shell, said. die Provided with a flared downwardly extending side'walland the lower edge of said shell extending below the said iiange, and a shank extending from said die and being spaced 'from the lower edges of said shell.
9. A button comprising a body portion provided with a downwardly extending hub having an imperforate base provided with an annular groove and a central depression; a die fitting within the hub and provided with a downwardly extending shank, said die provided with a downwardly and in wardly extending flange, and a top plate secured to the body portion 01E the button.
10. A button comprising a body portion having a hub provided with an imperforate base; an anchor in said hub comprising a die provided with a downwardly depending shank, and an enlarged upper portion provided with a downwardly and inwardly extending rim,
l1. A button comprising in part a die having a downwardly depending shank and an upper enlarged portion, said enlarged portion extending downwardly to form a rim and said rim forced inwardly but leaving a space between the edge of said rim and the downwardly depending shank.
