T0157] N10/n it may concern.'
Be it known that I, MARCEL Lissnaxg a citizen ot' the Republic of France, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented a neiv and useful Improvement in Tractors, of which the follmvingis a specification. My invention relates to improvements in tractors and principally in the t-ractive treads thereof wherein a series of pivotally connected arcuate flights operate in conj unctionwith means for limiting the move- ,ment of said flights relatively to each other to form a rigid arcuate support for contact with the ground.
il"lie primary object of my invention is to provide an improved tractor arranged to present an arcuate tractive area similar to that presented by a wheel of immense di-A ameter by means of a and compact device.
.A further object of the invention is to provide a'n comparatively' small rangement whereby the tractor fiights may used to designate similar parts throughout specification and drawings, and in.
. be lubricated effectively to decrease -frictional resistance.
I accomplish these and otherv objects means of the device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specication wherein like characters of reference are the said vvhich- 4lFigure 1 is a view ofA my improved device partly in longitudinal section;
ig'. 2 is' a transverse on line 2-2 of cated;
Fig. 3 is a section; and
Fig.A 4 is an' enlarged sectional .view taken online H of cated.
Referring to the .drawings the numeral l is 'used to designate a pair ofelliptical hous, ings arranged parallel to each other` and aviiig centrally disposed 'elliptical slots 2 in the adjacent faces. 1
Pins' extend through the slots 2 and into the housings 1 so th'atppposite ends of said pins abut against the 'opposite inner faces of thelioiisings '1 to take the lateral thrust Fig.A 1 in thev direction indiplan view of'Fig. 1 partly in o5 the tractive elements hereinafterI more l fully set forth.
The pins 8. are `pivotally connected by means of. links '4 -and 6, said links 4-being l Specification-of Letters Patent.

mounted upon the pins each other to ings 1.
Suitable anti-friction tably mounted upon the erseI the interiors of the A slotted partition each housing l'and in spaced relation to the inner faces or sides of said hithin the space 'thusformed I ,havepro- 3 and extendtoivard the space betiveen the hous' rollers 8z are rota.- sleeves 7 andtrav-e housing l.`
h are in 'turn secured, to a pair 16 carrying'l a suitable driving sprocket wheel 17 having arcuate seats 18 arranged intervals' around the periphery thereof to `engage and carry rollers 19 mounted approximately midway on the pins 3 in turn rotatably mounted Within the housings 1.
y9 is arranged within ssj A series of arcuate lights20 are pivotally connected-to each other by' means of legs oi' closed in Figs. 1 andI 4 of the drawings.
adjoining or abutting edges with Whichl abut in certain positions to" limit' the movement of said iightarelatively to each other to form a rigid section comprising several members on used, thereby obtaining the same tractive advantages Without the excessive Weight.
arming a support in a circle of large diieach of the nights 2o is provided onthein'ivardly I position and which separate a sufficient del grec, when the flights 20 are4 slightly separated, as when turning the short ends of the elliptical formation, to prevent the entrance of large portions of earth or boulders which might tend to rupture the flights when brought into an operative position.
It is obvious from the foregoing that I j have provided an improved tractor having means for vdecreasing the t'rictional resistance as Well as improved means for providing a rigid tractive section composed of several sections haviiw means for limiting their i'i'iovement relatively to eachother to form such a rigid supporting section.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is- 1. A tractor comprising a pair of' parallel elliptic housings having -elliptical slots in their adjacent faces; a series of arcuate flights pivotally connected and havingr inwardly projecting flanges arranged to abut and limitthe movement of the iights relatively to each other; pins connecting the flights and extending through the slots iny the housings; links connecting the pins Within the housings; means connected to and extending between the pins to close those portions of the elliptical slots between the pins to prevent the entrance of debris and the exodus of lubricating material; and serrated overlapping plates secured to the outer surface of each flight.
' 2. A tractor comprising a pair of parallel elliptic `housings havingelliptical slots in their adjacent faces; and a series of pivotally connected arcuate flights mounted for longitudinal movement within said slots and having means for limiting the movement of each iiight relatively to each adjacent flight whereby a rigid section may be formed of several adjoining flights to support the housings.
3. A tractor comprising a pair of parrallel elliptic housings having elliptical slots in their adjacent faces; a series otl pivotally connected arcuate flights mounted for longitudinal movement Within said slots and having means for limiting the movement of each flight relatively to each adjacent flight whereby a rigid section may be formed of several adjoining flights to support the housings; and serrated overlapping plates secured to the outer surface of each iight.
4. A tractor comprising a pair of parallel elliptic housings having elliptical slots in their adjacent faces; a series of pivotally connected arcuate flights mounted for longitudinal movement Within said slots and having means for limiting the movel'nent of each flight relatively to each adjacent flight wherebjv a..rigid section may be formed of several adjoii-iing flights to support the housings; and means for closing the elliptical slots between the flights to prevent theV exodus of lubricating oil and the entrance of' debris.
5. A tractor comprising a pair of parallel elliptical housings havingelliptical slots in their inner faces; a series of 'arcuate flights pivotally connected and having inwardly projecting flanges arranged to abut and limit the movement ofthe flights relatively to each other to form a rigid arcuate section comprising several adjacent flights to support the housings; pins connecting the flights and extending through the slots in the housings; links connecting thepins within the housings; and a second set of links connected to and extending between the p ins and arranged to cover the slots to prevent the entrance of debris and the exodus of lubricating oil.
j .In Witness whereof, I hereunto set my signature'.
