Description

E. H. RUEDIGER. CONSTANT TEMPERATURE BATH.
l APPLICATION HLED'MAR. 4, ISIS. v 33, 15 Patented Nov. 25,1919.
I Ill l 0 y T I -I I Il. I II I I n I I I I I 1s T 2 T||I I I I I I n l h! .EE-...in I 4 WITNESS- ERNEST H. RUEDIGER, or BIsMARcK, NORTHDAKOTA.
coNsTANTATEi/IPERATURE BATH.,
To all whom t may concern:
Be itV known that I, ERNEST H. RU'EDIGER, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Bismarck, in the county of Burleigh and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Con l etant-Temperature Baths, vof which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to liquid .baths and has for `its principal object the production of a device which will maintain a uniform temperature of liquid within the' bath.
- from a receptacle into the bath for maintaining a predetermined Vtemperature for the liquid within the bath.
One vpractical form of construction Vand assembly of the present invention will be hereinafter described and is illustrated in the drawing, in which:
The figure isa longitudinal sectional view through the device, portions of the construe; tion' being v`shown in elevation.
1n the preferred embodiment of the present invention about to be described, 5 designates a box, which may be of any desired size or shape, in which the mechanism is carried whereby the entire device may be easily lifted and carried to a desired placeV and will be protected from injury and will only require a minimum amount of space. Although the boX may be made of any desired material, if made of wood it is preferably provided with the lining 6 of metal for preventing leakage, it is obvious that if the box is made of wood or like material and then a sheet metal lining is provided the box will be made much lighter than if made of metal entirely.
A tub 7 is placed within the box and may be of any desired shape, although of course it should preferably conform to the contour 0f the interior of the box. The receptacle Specicatioii'of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 25, 1919.' Applicationled March 4, 1919. Serial No. 280,645. A
8 is likewise; carried within the boXvand at a slight distance from the tub 7 and spaced from the walls of the boX, as shown at 9 thus lproviding suflicient space for liquid overflowing lthe receptacle to pass from the boX through the waste pipe 10.
A pumpcasing 11 for a conventional form of centrifugalV pump is carried within thereceptacle 8V adjacent the upper portion thereof and has a delivery pipe 12 leading downwardly therefrom toward the bottom of thel receptacle. The conduit 13 is connected. to the delivery pipe 12, this conduit 13 extending from the receptacle 8 and spanning the space between the receptacle 8 and the tub 7 and passing into the tub as shown. A return conduit ltcommunicates with the lower portion of the tub 7 and also with the lower portion of the receptacle 8.
In order to illustrate a complete` structure, a suitable form of circuit closure 15 is ca rriedjwithin the tub 7 Vand has conductors 16v connected thereto, the conductors also being connected to the motor 17. The shaft 18 is connected tothe motor and likewise to a suitable pump within the casing 11 not being deemed knecessary to be herein illustrated as any form of .pump` may be employed'. V
When the device is in use, the receptacle 8y may Abe filled with any suitable liquid, such as water and obviously the water Will also pass from the receptacle through the conduit- 14 into the tub 8, thus causing the liquid level within the tub and the receptacle to be the same. The receptacle is filled until it runs over the same and this waste liquid passes from the boX through the waste pipe` 1.0.l As itv is the object of this invention to have a cold liquid bath, ice may be placed in the receptacle 8't`o chill the liquid therein.
As above pointed out, since it is the object of the invention to provide a constant temperature cold liquid bath, the thermostatic circuit closer is set to close the circuit when the temperature of the liquid within the receptacle rises above a predetermined degree. 'lhus a circuit will be closed over the conductor 16 and the motor will operate to drive the shaft 18 .and actuate the pump within the casing 11. As the pump is driven it Vwill force liquid from the receptacle through the delivery pipe 12 and thence through the delivery conduit 13 into the tub 8 it being noted that the liquid thus forced from the receptacle is from a point 2. Ina device of the class described, vthe 50 adjacent the ice therein, thus. causing the` liquid to be very cold. As the chilled liquidv is thus Aforced into the tub, the .-tempera- I ture of the liquid within thetub 7 will be lowered until it Vreaches a predetermined low degree andat this time the circuit closer will be acted upon to break thecircuit over the conductor 16 thus causing the motor 17 to stop. This action will cause the pump to cease operating, whereupon further .foro-- ing of the liquid into the tub will stop. As the chilled liquid above referred to passes into thetub, vsome'of the Aliquid originally carried within the tub will pass through 'the conduit 1-1 back into the receptacle 8 wherein it again will be chilled. K
Thus it will be seen that the liquid within the tub 7 will be maintained at a desired` temperature and accordingly articles or material to be cooled will be-placed within the tub. It is therefore apparent that the device is particularly advantageous in medical diagnosis, especially for certain forms of reaction and tests. v l
The Vforegoing description and accomy panying drawings have reference to what might be considered to be the approved or preferred form of my invention. I Vdesire it to be understood that I` maymake such changes in the construction, combinationand arrangement of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a tub, a receptacle carried adjacent said tub, a delivery 'conduitl connecting said receptaclev to said tub, a return conduit communicating with the receptacle, and the tub, and means for forcingV liquid fromV said receptacle through said delivery conduit into said tub, while some liquid from said tub will flow therefrom through the return conduit into said receptacle, thus retaining the liquid within the tub at a desired temperature.
combination of a tub, a receptacle carried adjacent'sai'd tub, a" pump casing carried adjacent .the-upper portions of the receptacle and having a delivery pipe depending therefrom, a horizontally extending delivery carried within said receptacle, the circuitV embodying the circuit closer. andY motor, a'
motor shaft extending from said motor, pump means carried within sa-id pump casing and being connected to said shaft, whereby whenthe circuit is closed the motor will operate for drivingthe shaft and operating the pump thus causing liquid in said receptacle to lbe 'forced through the said delivery pipe and supply conduit into said tub, while liquid from the tub will pass through said return conduit into the receptacle thus keeping the liquid within the tub at a desired temperature. p f
3. In a device ofthe class described, the combination of a box, a wastepipe leading from said box, an enlarged tub carried within saidbox, a reduced receptacle lcarried within said box, a delivery conduit connecting said receptacle toV said tub, a return conduit Vcommunicating with said tub and receptacle, andV means for forcing Vliquid f f ERNEST H'RUEDiGER.
