To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. 'HERon, of the city of Brantford, in the county of Brant, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Meat-Slicers, of which the followingris a specification.
his invention relates to slicers of the type in which the meat is carried on a slide plate movable transversely of a carriage reciprocable arallel to a rotary knife, and my object is to devise simple and effective means for supporting and feeding the slide Fig. 3 an en elevation showing the base and carriage only;

'- 1 is the base, which may be of any suitable form, preferably provided with a continu-' ous top 2 imperforate except as may be necessary for the passage of the operating shaft 3. The means for operating this shaft and for rotating the rotary knife 4 are old in the art and are not herein described nor;
shown in the drawings.
The shaft 3 actuates the carriage 5 by means of the connecting rod 6. The carriage is provided with rollers 7 which run -on the parallel tracks 8 formed on top of the base 1. At one edge offthe base parallel to the tracks is formed the guide flange, 9. The inner side of this flange is engaged by the shoulder 10 formed on the carriage and its outer side by the retaining strip 11- secured to the carriage. The carriage is thus suitably guided and supported entirely above the top of the base 1, which top may be flush surfaced and imperforate as already Specification of Letters Patent. The carr age carrles the slide plate 12, which is guided by the fixed or stationary gulde 13 and the. laterally movable guide 14, $0 that the plate is movable in a'direction at right angles to the direction of mopinion 20 on the spindle 21 journaled on the carriage. This spindle 21 also has secured thereto aratchet wheel 22, which is engaged by a sprmg actuated dog 23 pivoted on a gear wheel 24 loose on the'spindle 21. This gear wheel 24 meshes with the rack 25 slidably supported on the carriage parallel to the direction of motion of the carriage. This rack has a linger 26 secured thereto adapted to engage the stops-27 and 28 as the carriage is reciprocated. One of these stops is adjustable, but as the means for adjustment are well known in the art, they are not herein described nor shown in the drawings.
The result of the construction above described is that as the rack strikes the left hand stop as shown in Fig. 4, the gearwheel 24 is rotated backward a given distance and moves the do 23 back a given number of teeth. of. the ratchet wheel. When the finger on the rack 25 contacts with the right hand stop 28 (see Fig. 4) the ratchet wheel is rotated and the gearing is actuated to move the rack 15 and thus feed forward the slideplate 12 ready for the ner I will now describe and connected with the slide plate so as to move the latter asv desired.
One or more hooks 47 are secured to the movable guide 14 which engage in a groove 48 formed in the upper face of the plate 12 parallel to its edge. The late is thus free to slide longitudinally 0 the guide, but

Lugs 29 depend from the movable guide 14 and through two of these lugs-pass the bolts 30-on which are located coil springs 31, which engage washers 32 secured on the bolts and a flange 33 on the carriage through which flange the bolts pass. These sp'rmg.
- actuated bolts thus tend to press themovable guide against the edge of the plate and the plate against the stationary uide 13.
To move the movable gui e I provide a rod 34 which is secured to one of the lugs 29 and passes through the sides of the carriage. At the left hand side of the machine as viewed'in Fig. 1 I pivot the cam lever 35 on lugs 36, which cam lever engages the .end of the rod 34 so that by rocking the cam leverthe movable guide may be pushed to the right against the pressure of the springs and the rack 15 disengaged, (see Fig. 4).
- The slide plate 12 is provided adjacent the knife 4 with a series of meat holding teeth 37. At opposite sides of the plate adjacent the aforesaid edge, posts 38 and 39 are rigidly connected with the plate. The post 38 has a series of notches 40 formed on its I inner side, and the post 39 has a rack 41 formed on its outer side, the teeth of the rack being preferably of ratchet type downwardly directed.
.- 42 is a toothed meat holding bar having at one end a rounded tooth 43 adapted to fit into any one of the notches 40 aforesaid. A dog 44 is provided at the other end of the bar and is adapted to engage the'teeth' of the rack 41. This dog is movable by'means of the spring actuated lever 45 pivoted interengaged.
It will be noted that the meat holding bar engages the posts 38 and 39 at the inner side of each post. This entirely .prevents a trouble which has been experienced with other types of meat holder in which the pressure against the center of the edge of the slide plate 13 causes the plate to spring,

What I claim as my invention is 1. In a meat slic r, the combination of slide plate; a carriage provided with a stationary guide for one edge ofthe plate; a laterally movable guide for the other edge of the plate supported on the carriage; a
connection between the movable guide and the plate whereby the movementof the former may be imparted to the latter without interfering with the movement of the plate lengthwise of the slide; a inion journaled on the carriage; a rack on t e plate engage able with and disengageable from the plnionl by the lateral movement of the plate-aforesaid; and.means for driving said pinion to actuate the rack and thereby move the plate. 2. In a meat slicer, the combination of a slide plate, a carriage provided with a stationary guide .for one edge of the plate; a laterally movable guide for the other edge of the plate supported on the carriage;
springs tending to press the movable gulde toward'the fixed guide; a stem connected with the guide; a cam lever pivoted on the carriage and engaging the stem adapted to move the stem to move the plate away. from the fixed guide; and a connection between the movable. guide and the, plate whereby the movement of the former may be imparted to the latter without interfering with the move ment of the plate lengthwise of the carriage.
