45 means 10 tools, particularly those of the chopping` kind, and more especially to an ax, and the invention in its broadest aspect aims to provide improved means for detachably and firmly connecting the aX-head to the handle.
rThe invention further aims to provide an ax, so constructed as to prevent the from becoming detached, when being in use, that is intermittently swinging over the wood chopper or other operators head. 1n fact,
this particular means for preventing detach;-
ment of the aX from the handle is 'rendered more an'd more secure While 'the aX is being constantly used, for the reason that owing to the centrifugal force, the aX-head binds closer in contact with the handle, the more the aX is used. Y
The invention further aims to provide an aX having a cutting blade, `and a head portion, one face of which is recessed for the re- 30.ception of the outer extremity of the aX the operators hands.
The invention further aims to provide a cover plate, to cover the recessed face of the head `of the aX, to retain the outer end of the handle in said recess, there being a tongue and groove connection for the lower part of the cover plate, means fordetachably connecting the upper flange of saidrplate, and the flange or wall of the upper part of the recess, said flanges or walls overlapping, and for detachably connecting said flanges. It is obvious that when the means such as set bolts or the like are removed, the cover plate may be easily disconnected, and the aX handle removed.
The invention further aims to provide tongue and groove connections, longitudinally and transversely of the overlapping flanges, thereby rendering them more secure and rigid relative to each other.

preferable, it is obvious that as a result of a reduction kof the invention to a more practical form for commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible to changes, and the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are4 comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the aX constructed in accordance with the invention and applied to the aX candle.
Fig. 2. is a vertical sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, that is transversely thereof.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, showing the inclined or converging walls of the recess for the ax handle.y
Fig. l is a detail perspective view ofthe cover plate.
Referring more especially to the drawings 1 designates the head of an ax, provided with the usual cutting blade 2, provided with acutting edge 3. 'The head of the aX has a transverse recess 4. 1t is to be noted that this recess is tapered, in other words, the upper and lower walls thereof converge, in a directiontoward the hand grasping porltdi-on of the handle, vwhereby the outer end of the handle `will frictionally bind in the recess vowing to the centrifugal action due to swinging the ax over the head. Adjoining the lower wall 6 of the recess, the face of the blade, that is at a point immediately betweenrthe Vblade and the head of the aX bes ing provided with an L-shaped groove 7.
yThis groovey is bound on one/side by aurib 8, which 1s disposed over a flange 9. The.
upper wallnlO of the recessV isin the form of a flange forming an integral Apart of the head of the The upper face of this flange or wall 10 has a transverse groove 11. The flange 10 in cross-section is of a shape to conform to and engage one edge of the ax handle, whereby the aX handle may lit the recess snugly. A suitable cover plate 12 is provided. The lower part of this cover plate has an L-shaped flange or portion 13, which engages the L-shaped groove 7, the rib 8 and the flange 9 engaging in close position to the transverse part of the Lshaped tongue 13, thereby so retaining the flange in the L-shaped groove,
when the cover plate is in contact with the ax head, but permitting the cover plate to be moved, or swung slightly outwardly, so as to permit of its detachment from the head of the aX.
kment ofthe cover plate, but the securing meansY is passed `through the flange. Even after the se-curing means is 'arranged inthe flange l1/1, the tongue and groove 15 and 11 reinforce the flange 14: in position. llt is to be noted that one edge of the wall or iiange' 10 is beveled as shown at 16, in order to engage the beveled surface 17, at the point Vwhere the flange lgintegrally unites to the cover plate. Adjacent to but slightly spaced from the beveled surface 17 is a rib 18, forming an integral part' of ythe inner face of the cover plate. This rib 18 is provided with a bevel 19, to engage the beveled part 20 of the aX handle, and the upper face of this rib is at right angles to the inner Vsurface of the cover plate, so as to engage-the underV surface of the' fiange'lO. Bythe provision of this rib it is to be noted that the flange or vwall 10, when the cover plate is inposition engages between this rib and the bevel 17, thereby rendering the connection of the cover plate and the flange 10 more secure. Suitable set lbolts 21 are threaded through the flange 14 and flange 10, thereby securely connecting thecover plate in po- Y sition. It isV obvious that by theyremoval of the set bolts, the cover plate may be swung slightly laterally, disengaging the tongue 15 from the transverse groove or recess 11,*after which the `l shaped tongue 13 may be easily disconnected from the L- Vshaped groove `'7, after which the aX handle may be easily removed from the recess of the ax head. v
The invention having een set forth, what 'is claimed. as'new and useful is: Y A .y Y 1. The combination with an ax blade in- The upper part of the cover plate has la laterally extending flange 141-, `recess flange, a cover plate for the recess, the lo-wer cluding a head, which is provided with a transversely disposed recess having a lower wall, the upper part of the head having Ya ange, said flange and the wall being convergent of an ax handle engaging in said between the convergent wall and part ofthe cover plate having detachable connections with the aX blade, the upper part of the cover plate having-a-lat`eral flangev overlying the first flange, the upper part'vof the cover plate at apoint where f the latter flange integrally connects' tothe cover plateJ being provided with a groove for the reception of the former flange, said overlapping yflanges having aA transverse tongue and groove connection, and means for connecting the flanges together,
2. The combination with an aXblade including a head provided with a transversely disposedl recess, the lower wallof which being inclined longitudinally, .said head immediately below the lower inclined wall of the recess on one face thereof provided with a transverse groove angularin cross section, of a handle having its tapered end engaging the tranversely disposed recess, la cover platehaving a flange at its lower portion, angular in cross section corresponding to and fitting the groove, said cover plate overlying the handle and provided with a rib engaged between a portion of the handle the cover plate.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature 1n the presence of two witnesses.
