To all whomc't may concern:
' Be it known that I, CLARK NOBLE VVISNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picker-Heads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cotton pickers and more particularly to an improved picker head,the object of the invention being to so construct a picker head as to enhance its etficiency in removing cotton from the bolls.
lVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is an end view (partly broken away) of a picker head embodying my improvements; Fig. '2 is a transverse sectional view; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view; Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the pin carrier and operating shaft, and Fig. 5 is an inside face view of one of the end plates.
My improved picker head comprises a revoluble cylinder 1 disposed between two end plates .2, 3 connected by rods 4, 5, 6, and said end plates are provided, in their inner faces with annular grooves '7 in which said cylinder is mounted to turn. By thus mounting the cylinder in annular grooves in the end plates, cotton will be prevented from clogging between the ends of the cylinder and said end plates. The end plates are made with circular portions or extensions 8 which constitute means for supporting a tube 9 having a slot 10 to receive cotton from the picking means carried by the cylinder, as hereinafter explained. The tube leading from any suitable pneumatic means (not shown) will be connected with the tube 9 and if the latter be extended beyond one of the end plates of the picker head, it may serve as a handle.
An operating shaft 11 passes through the cylinder '1 and through suitable holes 12 in the end ,plates, suitable antifriction bearing devices 13 being provided on the respective end plates for said shaft and the latter is extended beyond its bearing on one of the end plates for connection with suitable driving means. Rods 14 pass transversely through the .cylinder and the shaft 11 and are rigidly secured at their respective ends to the cylinder wall. The rods 14 serve not only to secure the'shaft 11 to the cylinder 1, but also as guides for a carrier 15 having lateral flanges 16. A set of picker pins 17 pro ects from each flange of the carrier and the pins pass freely through holes in the wall of the cylinder, the two sets of pins projecting from the carrier, respectively in opposite directions.
The body of the frame or carrier 15 may be made cylindrical in form and is provided at respective ends with pairs of lugs or pro jections '15 to receive between them circular cams 18 projecting inwardly from the end plates :2 and 3, so that when the shaft 11 and cylinder 1 are rotated, the carrier 15 will be caused to reciprocate within the cylinder and cause the respective sets of picker pins to be alternately projected and withdrawn.
A hood 18 is secured to the connecting rod 4: and projects partly over the cylinder 1 some distance from the same, said hood being prevented from upward displacement by means of lugs 19 secured to the end plates 2, 3. The hood is also provided with a flange 20 projecting downwardly toward the slotted receiving tube 9.
Curved guard fingers 21 are secured at their lower ends to the connecting rod 5 and extend partly around the cylinder 1. Those portions of the guard fingers 21 which are disposed in front of that portion of the cylinder which is presented to the cotton boll are caused to pass through portions of circumferential grooves 22 in the cylinder, so that the picker pins will not be prevented by said guard fingers from effectively reaching the cotton in the boll. The upper portions 23 of the guard fingers bear a tangential relation to the cylinder, projecting rearwardly in a slanting direction and. terminating at their free ends below the upper portion of hood 18.
t will be seen that when the shaft 11 and cylinder 1 are rotated, one set of picker pins will be projected as they approach the forward portion of the head and remove the cotton from the boll. As this set of pins approaches the upper portion of the head. the same will begin to reccde and the slant ing upper portions of the guard fingers will strip the cotton bolls from the pins. In order to obviate the possibility of the boll being'moved aside by the picker pins without properly picking the cotton there from, anabutme'nt rod 24: is provided and'is disposed over what beyond the paths of the picker pins. The abutment rod is provided at one end with an arm 25 mounted in lugs 26 on the end plate 2 and is held yieldingly in position by a spring '27,a stop 28' being pro- '7 engage the end plate to.
