Be it known that I, JAMns A. EDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Springfield Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Threading Button-Head Stay- .bolts, of which the following is a specification."

The usual practice is to automatically lift the pawl F and release thering D to open the cutters at a predetermined point in the downward 'movement of the carriage, this being calculated as nearly as possible to stop the thread close to the head of the blank. I have provided a device whereby the opening of the dies or the cutting of the thread is stopped under control of the head itself so thatfor a thicker head the thread will stop earlier and for a thinner head later, and can be calculated to run exactly to the shoulder and not farther without regard to variations between difl'erent bolts. For this purpose I control the movement of the pawl F and the opening of the dies by a the shoulder itself on the work.

Fig.4 shows the details of'the dies or chasers and the operating mechanism therefor. Each of the'cutters P is mounted in a bracket 7Q which is pivoted at R to the unfderside' of the plate B, Fig.1.
Surrounding these is a ring D. Toggle links Sengage sockets in said ring and in the respective brackets which carry the cutters. Springs 7 l T are connected at one end to the underside of the carriage A and at their opposite end to the ring D so as to turn the latter in the direction of the arrow when it is released'in described and is claimed in my co-pending'application N 0. 220,718 filed March 6, 1918.
Though I have described with greatiparticularity of detail a specific embodim ent of my invention, yet it is not to be understood therefrom thatthe invention is restricted to the particularembodiment disclosed.
