JOSEPH ALBERT DAGENAIS, OF HULL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
ELECTRIC HEATING ATTACHMENT FOR COOK STOVES AND RANGES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 25, 1919.
Application filed May 10,1919. Serial No, 296,232.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn ALBERT Dace- NAIS, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Hull, in the county of Vright, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Heating Attachments for Cook Stoves and Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electric heating devices or attaclnnentsmore particularly to electric heating devices or attachments adapted for use in conjunction with cooking stoves or rangesand has for its pri mary object to provide a device of the character described adapted for use in conjunction with any approved form of cooking stove or range in a residence, dwelling or other premises and which on being connected with the usual electric installation may be conveniently used when it is not desired to operate the usual cooking stove or range by the burning of wood, coal or other fuel therein.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be conveniently used as an electric stove, range or heater in a residence, dwelling or other premises and thereby dispense wlt-h the necessity for a separate electric stove, range or heater in addition to the usual cooking stove or range.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be adapted for use as one of the usual parts or appurtenances of any approved form of cooking stove or range or as a separate contrivance.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described which will embody suitable and efficient means for confining the heat and preventing the heat from extending to the adjoining surfaces and parts of the cooking stove or range in conjunction with which it is being used by connection with the usual electric installation.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described which will be simple in construction, convenient and efiicient in operation, and economical in construction.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts and elements described. in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and set out in the appended claim.
In the draw1ngs forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals of reference designate like parts throughout;
1* igure 1 IS a top plan view of an embodiment of my invention, and
Fig. is a view partly in elevation and partlym section, the section being on the line 22 of Fig. 1, with the coils removed. Referring to the drawings in detail, my nnproved electric heating device or attachment comprises a plate 10, which may be made from any suitable metal and is here shown conforming to the shape of a circular stove plate or lid of any approved form of domestic cooking stove or range. This plate 10 is cast or otherwise formed with a spiral groove 11 in its upper surface within wh ch is provided 'a layer 12 of a certain insulating material, a suitable composition of which may be obtained by an admixture in approximately equal proportion of asbestos paper and asbestos powder or cement, combined after moistening. If desired, a proportion of mica may be added to this composition.
Electric coils 13 and 11 are positioned within the insulated groove 11' and are retained therein by means of strips 15 extending transversely of the-groove 11 cast or otherwise formed integral with the plate 10. The extremities of the coil 13 are secured by means of screws or other suitable fastening members 16 provided with washers or disks 17, while the extremities of the coil 11- are also secured by similar screws or other suitable fastening members 18 likewise provided with similar washers or disks 19.
A wire or conductor 20 connects the point 16 at the extremity of the coil 13 with the point 18-at the extremity of the coil 14 and thence extends to the plug 21 located at any suitable point in the upper surface of the plate 10, while a second'wire or conductor 22 connects the point 16at the opposite extremity of the coil 13 and the point 18 at the adjacent opposite end of the coil 14 with the twin plu 21 in the upper surface of the plate 10 a jacent the plug 21. Insulated channels 20 and 22 may be provided in the upper surface of the plate 10 to contain the connecting wires or conductors 20 and 22.
It will thus be seen that by connecting the twin plug 21 and 21' on the plate 10 by means of a suitable extension to a convenient socket in the electric installation in a residence, dwelling or other premises the coils 13 and 14 will be immediately heated, and that when the usual stove plate or lid of any approved form of cooking stove or 'ange is replaced by one of my devices a convenient form of'electric stove or heater is provided. The heat from the coils 13 and 14, while readily extending to any utensil or container placed on the plate 10 will be prevented from radiating to the adjacent surfaces or parts of the stove or range by means of the insulation 12 which, if desired, may be extended t0 cover the entire outer edges and the bottom of the plate 10.
The plate 10 may be made to conform to the shape or contour of any of the usual lids or plates of any approved form of cooking stoves or ranges, and may be so constructed that it may be used in place of the usual stove plate or stove lid or form a separate interchangeable article. The usual means, 23, may be provided to receive a handle or lifter for convenience in handling.
From. the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings it is believed that the details of construction and combination of the several parts of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and that the advantages and convenience in operation will be readily understood and appreciated. It is to be understood that minor changes in the precise form, proportion or construction herein specified and illustrated may be made from time to time without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
An electric heating unit consisting of a metallic plate formed with a spiral groove and with radial strips rigid with said plate and extended across said groove, electric coils in said groove and retained by and beneath said strips, insulating material in said groove. and means connecting said coils in parallel.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
Signed at Ottawa Canada this 1st day of May one thousand nine hundred and nineteen.
