C orresponding and like parts Vare referred to in the following description and indicated in all theJ views ofthe accompanying l drawings by the same reference characters.
Letthe numeral 6 design-ate aV cylinder,-vr
in which, a'pistony is reciprocably mounted and `adapted yto be actuated 'by means of air admitted to said cylinder 6 through an Va'ii chest 8; A piston 'stein 9 is connectedwitli said piston7, and extends'through the forward end ofthe cylinder 6. A rack barlO is secured to the forward extremity of the Y piston stem, which said'raclrba'r is disposed V between two segmental gears 12 and 13,'tlie segmental 'gearsr12 and 13 being provided with teeth "ietliatv interniesh with the rack bar teethA 15 ,disposed on opposite sides of the said rack bar 10. The segmental gears 12 and 13 are positioned in a housing 16, which said housing is integrally formed with the cylinder 6, the forward extremity of this housing being enlarged,as shown alt 17, to accommodate said segmental "gears 1Q ioo andv13. The segmental gears 12 and 13 'are c.
respectively mounted upon journal shafts18` and 19, whichrshafts are journaled in the housing 16 at right angles tothe directionk offreciprocaticn ofthe piston .Z, The upper thereby iix'edly connecting the gripping extremities of the journal'shafts 18and19 extend above the housing 16, and are vconnected respectively with'ecoentrics 20 and 21 `on the exterior of the housing 16, thesaid leccentries being adapted to revolve h'o'r'izoiitally and inthe saine direction in which the segmental gears 12 and 13 are revolved.
Blocks 22 and u23 are niovably mounted on top of the housing 16, and are each provided with an opening 24 therein, in which said openings, the eccentrics Y2O and 21 are received, the said-openings being circular and againstfthewal'ls of which, the eccentrcs 20J and 21-rotate,fthereby causing the said blocks to ysiinultaneously move toward each -othermand slightly in a longitudinal direczthroughjthe medium of theraclr bar 1Q,
vcauses the segmental gears y12 and 13 touro-v tate in the direction'indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2, and said segmental gears 12 and `13, beingv made fast to the'journal shafts 13 and 19,"willcause the latter vto revolve in the samedirection together with the eccentrios 20 and 21.1, Each of the blocks 22 and 23 isprovided with a dove-tail recess on its inner edge, in which` dove-tail tenons 2510i.
gripping jaws 26 are adapted to bereoeived,
jaws 26 with the blocks 22 and 23 so that the same'will movev with` said blocks. A
drill steel 27, or other article to be upset is il, adapted to be engaged .betweenysaid grip-Y ping jaws 26.1and iirmly held thereby until l The particularconstruction of these -grip-l f ping jaws 26 for the accommodation'of a ldrill steel will later be explained. :j
the upsettingoperation has been completed.
A4 pneumatic dolly operating motor 28 is mountedv on top of the housing lG'parallel -with the gripping jaws 23, the sameheing adaptedto actuate the, dollyV 29, which is 4positioned directly in front of the forward extremities of the grippingjaws 23 and in line withrtlie extremityof ythe article vto be upset. Y l' e' e The cylinder 6 is provided with air'inducv ,A ,tion passa- ges 30 and 31, which communicate at their outerextremities with the'interior of the air chestv S and attlicir-inner estremi1 ties with the' interior of the cylinder 6 ou,
opposite sides ofthe piston 7 A valve piece 32 controls the induction of air through these.
passages 30 and 31, the saidV valve piece being movably mounted-in theohest 3 to altern nately open and close either of the said passages30`and 31. in operating rod'33 eX-,
A tends into the air chest 3., and passes through the valve piece` 32ftlierein. j threaded on the inner extremityof. the op- A nut .is
Amovement by means of lugs 38, between which, thesaid valve piece 32 is disposed. Thus, when the operating rod 33 is moved forwardly, the spring 35 will prevent the said operating rod from sliding through the Vvalve piece 32, but will cause the said valve piecev 32 to he moved with theV rod 33y until the said'valve pieceengages with the for- .ward lug 38, whereupon, the spring35 will be compressed and permit the rod 33 to slide in tne valve niece 32 sufficiently for the valve piece 36 to he moved Afar enough to uncover a port -39.` When the valve piece 32 has reached its forward limit of movement, the same has been moved far enough to uncover the forward extremity of the passage 30, and, thereupoin'air will be instantly cofiducted through said passage 30 from the air chest 8 intoV said cylinder G rearwardly'of the piston 7, which will result in vmoving the piston Z forwardly, operating the gripping jaws 26 toward each other for the purpose of gripping the drill steel 27, through the instrumentalities heretofore described., As the piston 7 moved forwardly, the air in eoV the path ofthe piston is forced out of the cylinder-through the passage 31, recess 40 in the valve piece 32 and exhaust port 41', the recess LOof said; valve piece ,having bridged the exhaust port 411 and the outerextreinity of the passage 31 when the valvevpiece 32 was moved forwa 1dly.- When fthe valve piece' 32 has been moved to this'position, the forward lug 38 will prevent any further forward movement of the said valvepiece, and
ice
ietVv therefore further forward movement of the operating lever 33 will cause the spiral spring 35 to compress, allowing the operating rod 33 to nio-verstill further forwardly and carrythe valve piece 36 therewith suflieiently to open theport 39. VAn induction pipe l1 Ais in' communication with the 'airestablishedbetween the air. chest 3' and the pneumatic hammer 28 through the medium of an induction' pipe Ll2. Thus,` the pneumatic-hammer 28 will be caused to 0perate aiid'exert its energy upon:y the'upsetvting dolly 29 through the vmedium k'of a tappet e3, one extremity of which is received Yin the pneuinatic'jhammer 28 and the other extremity is received in the uppsetting dolly Y j ISO 29,*as shown at 44;.: The operation of the iio of the operating rod 33 will cause a collar 45 to engage with the valve piece 32 andv move the latter rearwardly and cover the forward extremity ofthe passage 30, which cuts ofi' the pressure in the rear of the piston 7 and establishes the same in front of the said piston by the opening of the passage 31 to communicate with the air chest 8. Thus, the motive fluid entering the. front of the piston 7, will move the latter rearwardly, the motive fluid in the ath lof the piston being forced out of the cylinder Vthrough the passage 30, recess 40 and exhaust port 41. This rearward movement of the piston 7 will cause the rack bar 10 to actuate the segmental gears 12 and 13 in the reverse direction, revolving the eccentrics 20 and 21 therewith through the medium of the shafts 13 and 19, thereby causing the eceentrics 20 and 21 to act upon the blocks 22 and'23 for moving the latter away from each other to release the gripping jaws 26 from the drill steel 27. With this separating movement of the blocks 22 and 23, the same will be simultaneously moved away from the dolly 29.
An operating lever 48 is pivoted at one extremity to the housing 16, as shown at 49, and with which lever, one extremity of a link 50 is pivoted, as shown at 51, the other extremity of the said link being pivotally connectedY with the forward extremity of the operatingrod 33, as shown at 52. By means of this operating lever 48, the valve'pieces 32 and 36 are operated, downward movement of the said operating lever 48 causing the said valve pieces to be moved forwardly for starting the machine in operation and upward movement of said operating lever causing the said valve pieces to move rearwardly for stopping vthe machine.
Each of the gripping jaws 26 is provided on its inner face with a semicircular groove 53, which receive the drill steel 27. These grooves 53, when the gripping jaws are moved together, form a conical shaped recess 54, which serves to shape the extremity of the drill steel being upset, and which also prevents the drill steel from being driven, or moved longitudinally from the upsetting dolly. The working extremity of the upsetting dolly 29 is of conical shape to conform to the conical shaped recess 54,
thereby resting, said cuttingedges against l solid material.. i y Y Roller bearings 57 are circumferentially disposed in the walls of the recesses 24 of the blocks 22 and 23, and againstwhich the eceentrics 20 and 21 work, thereby reducing the friction to a minimum.
The piston 7 is provided with an annular peripheral recess 58 on one side thereof, n
in which, a ring 59 yis received, land a retaining ring60 is also received in said recess 58.! Suitable Vpacking gaskets 61, formed of leather or other suitable material, are disposed on opposite sides of the ring 59, the said packing gaskets being protruded slightly beyond the periphery of the piston 7 Bolts 61 are passed through the retaining ring 60 and the packing ring 59 and enter the-piston 7, as shown at 62, the said bolts 61 serving to hold the two rings, as well as the gaskets 61, in place on the piston 7. Y
TheV forward extremity of" the housing 16 is provided with an opening 63 therein, through which the rack bar 10 is adapted to be protruded when the piston 7 is Ymoved forwardly.
The air chest 8 and respectively provided with the usual removable heads 64 and 65.
rllhe openingsY 20 and 21 in the bl0cks22 and 23 are covered by means of plates 66, which are secured to the upper extremities of the journal shafts 18 and 19 by means of fastening devices 67. j
While we have described and illustrated herein a specilicform of our invention, it
to and that the same may be modified and varied without departing from the spirit of the invention, or the scope of the appended claims. r v
