Specification of Letters ratent.
Patented Nov. 18, 1919.
Application filed September 4, 1917. Serial No. 189,650.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. GoonIxG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lancaster, county of Los Angeles, State ofCalifornia, have invented a certain new and useful F uel-Vaporizer; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
his invention relates to means for vapori'zing liquid fuel; and it may be said to consist in the provision of the novel and advantageous features and in the novel and improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts as will be apparent from the.description and claim which follow hereinafter.
One object of the invention is to provide novel and improved means of the nature specified in which looped tubing is arranged within the exhaust duct of a gas engine so that liquid fuel passing through the tubing is brought in contact with a comparatively great amount of surface which is subjected to a comparatively high degree of heat to thereby thoroughly vaporize the liquid fuel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device for vaporizing liquid fuel which can be readily joined to the exhaust duct of existing gas engines to form a section of the exhaust duct.
Further objects of the invention are to a provide a liquid fuel vaporizer which is simple and compact in construction, economical to manufacture, easy to install; and highly effective for its purpose.
Other objects and the advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the artfrom a careful consideration of the following description of the preferred 7 construction embodying the invention taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Figure lis a broken elevational view of a gas engine having the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged broken cross taken on the line 33.of Fig. 1.
Referring to Fig. I of the drawings, the be of the usual or any forth.
with the exhaust duct 4, the liquid fuel supply tank 5, and feed pi )ing 6 which is connected to the tank 5 and is connected to the engine in the usual or any suitable manner.
In order to thoroughly vaporize the liquid fuel and thus permit of efficient use of the heavier grades of liquid fuel, a loop 7 of pipe or tubing is arranged longitudinally within a section of the exhaust duct 4, and is joined to the feed piping 6.
The loop 7 of tubing is preferably arranged within the pipe section 8 which consists of the half parts 9 and 10 which are held together by bolts 11 passing through the lugs 12 which are provided on the parts 9 and 10. The end parts of the loop 7 of tubing are passed through openings 13 in the sides of the pipe section 8, and said end parts are connected to the sections 14 and '15 of the feed piping 6.
Looped'copper wire 16 01- the like is preferably disposed within the loop 7 of tubing in order to retard the flow of the liquid fuel and to break up and more thorou hly heat and vaporize the liquid fuel.
11 applying the vaporizing device to existing engines a part of the exhaust duct 4 is cut oil, and the )ipe section 8 with the loop 7 of tubing therein is fitted over or suitably joined to the adjacent ends between which the exhaust duct has been cutout.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, the construction and advantages of the invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art, and it will be seen that the improved construction is well adapted to accomplish the objects of the invention.
claim: a
The combination with a gas engine having an exhaust duct and liquid fuel feed piping, of a pipe section made of separable parts, said pipe section having openings in the sides thereof and connected to the exhaust duct, a loop of tubing arranged longitudinally within the pipe section, said loop of tubing passing through said openings and connected to the feed piping, and copper wire disposed within the loop of tubing. substantially as and for the purpose set In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification at Los Angels, county of Los Angeles, State of California,- this 28th day of August A. D. 1917.
