To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRAN cots, Huc- TOR L. Gun, and FRANK W. TowNsE n, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pewamo, in the county of Tonia andState of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice- Sawing Machines, of which the following is a specific-a tion.
This invention relates to ii'nprovements in ice sawing machines.
The invention has for its dominant "object to provide a portable ice sawing machine for cutting ice formed on bodie'sof water either artificial or natural into blocks, whereby they can be removed and stored.
It is also an object of the invention to provide adjustable guide means for control ling the course of the sawing machine, thereby insuring the cutting of even blocks in uniform sizes. Y
Another object of the invention is to provide means for adjusting the positioning of the machine saw with relation to the ice to be cut thereby in order that cuts of varying dept-h according to the thickness of the body of ice and the size of the saw, can befmadje.
Other independent objects are to provide features of construction of portions of the machine which tend toward the attainment of the above aims irrespective of the relation in which they are used.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter. V
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claim. H

Referring now more specifically to the drawings, there are provided a plurality of sleds designated 1 and 2, the forward sled 1 being provided with a draft connection fragmentally shown and indicated by the numeral 8. A body or platform 1 is arranged upon the sleds 1' and 2, the forward extremity of the same being pivotally mounted'up'on the sled l andprovi'ded with the usual fifth wheel 5, while the rear extremity thereof is loosely supported upon the sled 2 in a manner which is hereinafter more fully described, and has its intermediate. port-ion loosely connected with the forward extremity of the said sled 2 by means of a substantially V-shaped connecting element 6,'th'e respective extremities of which are secured in any desired manner to the adjacent Jortion of the said body and forward portlon of the sled Bearing beneath the platform lis a frame including longitudinal side members 8 transverse members 10 and longitudinal central member 9 secured to the members 10 and extending rearwardly, and provided with a downt'urned terminal and a plurality of perforations 11. The members 8 bear against the under face of the platform t and the member 9 andits attached members 10 and 8 are slidable beneath the platform through suitable keepers 9 attached to the under face of the platform, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. c
A catch bolt 12 is arranged upon the plat form to seat in the apertures 11 one at a time, and thus provide means for locking the frame in adjusted position relatively to the platform.
Depending from the side members 8 of the frame are. supporting brackets 7 each having a plurality of steps or rests and each adapted to ,bear oneat a time uponthe rear transverse member 2 of the rear sled 2.
It will be obvious that when the frame is so adjusted that the lower units of the rests 7 bear upon the rear member 2 of the sled 2, the platform will be held at a certain elevatiou, and when the frame is so adjusted that the upper units of the rests bear upon the members 2 of the rear sled the platform will be supported at a lower elevation, and when the frame is adjusted to cause the intermediate units of the rests to bear upon the member 2 the platform will be supported at a correspondingly intermediate elevation. The range of adjustment will correspond to the number of the units of the rests.
The apertures 11 correspond to the rest units so that the catch pin 12 will hold the frame in adjusted position.
Vertical standards 13 are secured to the opposite runners of the rear sled 2 and have journaled in their upper extremities a shaft 14- one end of which is offset as at 15 to provide an eflicient handle while arms 16 are fixedly mounted on the shaft in spaced relation and pivotally engage curved links 17, the lower extremities of which are pivotally secured to the sides of the platform or body a as at 18. Obviously, by rocking the shaft 1 1 the connecting links 17 will be raised or lowered and as a consequence the platform at will elevate the saw free from ice.
A shaft 19 is rotatably mounted in bearings secured to the under sides of the platform or body 4 and carries upon one extremity thereof a pulley 20, while upon the other extremity, a circular or disk saw 21 is fixedly arranged; said saw being provided with a guard 21 arranged upon the body 1 and braced with relation thereto by means of a bracket arm 20. It is of course to be understood that the opposite extremities of the transversely disposed shaft 19 project slightly beyond the adjacent sides of the platform 4.
Positioned upon a suitable bed arranged 011 the forward portion of the platform 4': is an engine or motor 22 having a pulley 23 mounted on the power shaft thereof whereby belt gearing 24 may be arranged thereabout and extended into engagement with the pulley 20 mounted on one of the extremities of the transverse shaft 19.
A guide element comprising an angle bar 25 is provided and is carried upon arms 26, the free ends of which are pivotally secured to bars 27 having elongated slots 28 formed therein and adapted to receive locking bolts secured to the platform 4: therethrough. To secure the bars 27 in adjusted positions with relation to the platform locking nuts are turned into engagement with the threaded shanks of said bolt. A bracing rod 29 is diagonally arranged between the pivotal arms 26 and has its opposite ends secured thereto to prevent relative movement thereof. It is to be also noted that the forward extremity of the downwardly extending portions of the angle iron guide 25 is thickened as at 31 and has its end curved, the thickened portion of the said guide serving as means for clearing the cut previously made by the machine while the curved end thereof serves to automatically disengage the guide element from the out as the machine approaches the end thereof.
To facilitate steering of the machine a handle bar 30 is secured to the rear end of the platform 4-. and, as will be understood, enables the operator to move the rear end of the machine transversely when desired.
In operation, after the first out has been made in a'body of ice by the circular saw 21 of the machine, the guide element 25 is engaged therewith and serves as means for guiding the machine in its next cutting or sawing operation over a course parallel to the first cut, thereby insuring the proper cutting of the ice. Should it be desired, blocks varying in width may be out by the machine by merely adjusting the bars 27 upon the platform 1, such movement shifting the guide element 25 either outwardly or inwardly from the platform according to the width of the block to be out. By raising the platform 1 through the medium of the shaft 14 and its respective arms 16, the slidable stepped supporting bracket 7 can be so positioned as to support the circular saw 21 in position to permit outs varying in depth. It may be here noted, that the blocks as out by the machine are not entirely severed, since water would be permitted to fill the slit caused thereby and upon freezing would again render the body solid. However, the cuts are made deep enough to allow the breaking of the blocks from the body of ice whereupon they may be moved or piked to the desired point.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of our claim, we consider within the spirit of our invention.
We claim:
An ice sawing machine including a rear support and a. vertically adjustable platform carrying a saw, a frame slidable relatively to the platform, a plurality of rests carried by the frame and adapted to engage one at a time with the support when the frame is adjusted relatively to the platform, a member carried by the frame and having perforations corresponding to the rests, and locking means carried by the platform and engageable with the perforations.
