To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, Grouse J. BLACK- HAM, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Uniontown, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in MoldingFlasks, of which the following is a speclfication.
This invention relates to a molding flask of the type usually employed in molding bodies having outwardly extending flanges, such as bath tubs, and particularly relates to an improvement in the sand anchors usually used in devices of this character.
In molding bodies, such as bath tubs, it has been known to fasten said anchor members to the sides and ends of the molding flask, so as to suspend the sand in the cope of the mold forming the flange. Under some conditions of use, as where trip hammer packing of the sand is practised, it has been found that the anchors did not hold the sand. It has been suggested to roughen the sides of the sand engaging portions of the anchors, but this improvement only partially remedied the objectionable falling of the sand when the mold was removed.
It was further suggested to more closely position the anchors but this necessitated an expensive drilling of the molding flask to provide supports for the additional anchors and in those conditions of use where the close positioning of the sand anchors was not desired, objectionable openings through the walls of the flask would be left through which the sand would leak.
Accordingly, one ofthe objects of this invention is to provide a construction of sand anchor arranged so that there may be a minimum number of drillings through the wall of the flask and at the same time provide a relatively "large number of anchors which may have any desired relative spacns I attain this object broadly by providing a series of anchors similar to the anchors now known but designed so that, when de sired, they may constitute a support for certain auxiliary anchors, all coacting to form a relatively closely positioned series of sand engaging members withtheir connecting elements spaced back of the edge of the packed sand.
l[he headed or rough sided anchors now known have not been found to be particularly etlicient in holding the sand especially where high powered rammers are used to pack the sand. The rough sides apparently have the eii'ect of interfering with. the secure packing of the sand adjacent the roughened surface.
Accordingly, another object of the invention is to provide a type of sand engaging portions to the anchors which will not in terfere with the high power ram-packing operation now used in this art.
I attain this object simply by forming the sand engaging parts in the form, of thin knife-like blades disposed edgewise to the direction of action of the rammers on the sand.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will be in part obvious from an inspection of the accompanying drawings and in part will be "more fully set forth in the following particular description of one form of mechanism embodying my invention, and the invention also consists in certain new and novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claim ed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:

Arranged at intervals adjacent a lower edge 8 of the flask wall 9 is a plurality of sand anchor units 10 arranged in. a row on the inner side of the flask. Each unit in cludes a main or wall engaging member L1 comprising a long threaded cylindrical. shank portion 12 passed transversely through apertures 13 in the wall of the flask and held in position by nuts 14:, as is usual with devices of this character.
Depending downwardly from the shank portion 12 is a flat knife-like bladed portion 15 which decreases in thickness from the shank portion toward the free end 16 as shown in Fig. 3. These members 11 are disposed in order with their fiat portions 15 arranged in parallel planes substantially at right angles to the plane of the wall 9 and disposed edgewise to the direction of movement of the rammers packing the sand 17.
In someconditions of use these members 11 may be employed as thus described and without the supplemental sand engaging members 18 hereinafter described. Each of the main members 11 constitutes a support for one or more of the supplen'iental sand engaging members, for which purpose each of the bladed portions 15 is provided with a threaded aperture 19, in which is adjustably mounted the shank 20 of the supplemental member. This supplemental member also includes fiat sand engaging portion 21 disposed at right angles to its shank and similar in construction and position to the members 15, except that in the form of the invention illustrated, it is not of the same depth as the member 15. As the shank 20 is threaded for some material distance along its length, it is obvious that by rotating the supplemental member in its aperture in the main member,
any desired adjustment or" the supplemental member relatlve to the main member may be attained, but usually the supplemental members are so spaced that the distances between the members 15 and 21 are equally spaced about the length and ends of the molding wall. 7
By means of a device of this character it is possible to provide one set of sand anchor apertures in the molding flask and these apertures may be spaced apart relatively long distances thus saving in cost of drilling a large number of apertures in the flask wall and further avoiding the weakening cflect of closely positioned apertures in this wall. If anchors in addition tothe wall held anchors are desired, any number of the supplementary anchors may be attached to the wall engaging anchors without the necessity of providing additional fastening connections with the flask wall. Further by using a sufficient number of these supplemental anchors, any desired close spacingv of the anchor members are provided which otherwise would-be either impossible or at least expensive should it be attempted to fasten each one to the flask wall. Further the closely positioned knife-like anchors securely retain the sand in position and permit the rammers to securely pack the sand about the series of anchors. As the thin bladed members 15 and 21 extend almost to the lower edge of the sand body 17 the holding effect is carried practically up to the bounding surface of the sand and at the same time the sand is anchored by the longitudimdtv extending shanks 20. As these shanks are removed from the edge of the sand they do not seriously affect the successful operation of the sand rammers.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
1. A molding flask including means for forming a body of sand with an outlining edge, a plurality of sand anchors provided with sand engaging parts adapted to be positioned relatively close to said sand edge and provided with shanks spaced from said sand edge, the shank of one anchor threaded into the other anchor thereby to provide for an adjustment between the sand engaging parts.

A molding flask including a wall having sand anchoring means disposed in fixed position on one side thereof, said means including a plurality of sand engaging members spaced from the wall and positioned relatively close to each other so that there will be a relatively small mass of sand be tween said members when the flask is in operative condition and spacing means projecting from certain of said members for securing the same to the wall and means "for supporting certain other of the, members from said spacing means.
3. A molding flask including a wall having a row of sand anchors on one side thereoi, said anchors each having a fastening portion and a flat bladed sand engaging portion, the flat portions of the several anchors having smooth sides and disposed in substantially parallel planes perpemlicular lo the general plane of the wall.

A molding flask including a wall provided with an opening, a sand engaging member including a shank fitted in said opening and a flat smooth sided sand engaging portion extending from said shank, said portion decreasing in thickness from the shank end thereof toward its free end to form a knife-like sand engaging member.
5. A molding flask including a wall provided with an opening, a sand engaging member including a shank fitted in said opening and a flat sand engaging portion extending from said shank, said portion de creasing in thickness from the shank end thereof toward its free end, and a similar sand engaging member having its shank carried by the wall engaging member.
