A TTOR/VE Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PENCIL AND FLASH-LIGHT COMBINED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 11, 1919.
Application filed March 3, 1919. Serial No. 280,319.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORVILLE D. YELLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of snohomish and State of \Vash, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pencils and Flash- ]Lights Combined, of which the following 1s a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n pencils, the object being to provide a combined pencil and flashlight, whlch may be either used for the purpose of supplying light to the point of the pencil when writing, or used as a flashlight in the ordinary manner.
Another object is to provide a pencil for the. use of persons obliged to take notes or memorandum in the dark, the pencil being especially useful for policemen, drivers of vehicles, such as taxicabs, and for various other purposes.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention includes a sectional casing, carrying at one end a pencil and an electric bulb, the casing containing a battery having one terminal connected to the lamp or bulb and its other terminal normally held from contact with a lug carried by the casing, through the medium of a spring, the sections of the casing being joined together by threads to permit of relative adjustment for the purpose of opening, or closing, the circuit through the medium of said lug.
The invention further consists of the following novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a combined penoil and flashlight constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a view looking at the pointed end of the pencil, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 01? Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention includes a casing formed of separate sections, indicated at 10 and 11 and joined to ether through the medium of screw threa s 12.
The section 10 carries the pencil, and for this purpose the outer end of the section 10 is provided with an offset extension 13, having concentrically arranged therein a tube 14, which is split longitudinally and is designed to receive the lead 15, the space be tween the tube and the surrounding walls of the extension 13 being for the purpose of storing additional leads.
The end of the tube 14 carries a split Wedge shaped member 16, over which is positioned a similarly shaped cap 17. This cap is formed with a central opening for the passage of the lead 15 and is removably secured to the extension 13 through the medium of threads 18. By loosening the cap 17, the lead 15 may be adjusted to the desired position, whereupon the cap may be tightened to hold the lead against movement.
The lamp is carried by an extension 19, which is located at the side of the extension 13, the former being provided with a socket 20, for the reception of a bulb 21. One terminal of the lamp is connected to a resilient conductor 22, one end of this conductor extending within the casing for contact with one terminal 23 of the battery 24. The other terminal of the lamp is connected to the casing by means of a short conductor 25, the conductor 22 being suitably insulated, as shown. The opposite terminal of the battery 24 is designed for contact with a lug 26, located within the end of the section 11 of the casing, the battery and lug being normally spaced apart, through the medium of a coil spring 27.
An insulated washer 28 is positioned be tween the spring 27 and the battery 24, so that current will not flow from the battery through the spring to the casing.
Normally the sections 10 and 11 of the easing are so adjusted as to space the end of the battery 24 from the lug 26, whereupon the circuit will be incomplete. To light the lamp it is only necessary to secure the sections 10 and 11 together a suflicient distance to cause the lug 26 to contact with the battery 24.
The invention provides an exceedingly convenient article, which may be used as a pencil in the ordinary manner, or it may be used for writing in the dark, the lamp 21 furnishing sufficient light for most purposes, while in addition, the device may be used as an ordinary flashlight.
' The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim. Having described the invention, what is claimed is The combination with a pencil having a hollow sectional casing threadedly secured together, one of said sections being divided into a pencil compartment and a lamp compartment, of an electric lamp in the lamp compartment and located adjacent the point of the pencil, an electric battery within the casing, a conductor communicating with the lamp compartment for connection with one of the lamp terminals, a resilient end portion carried by the conductor and extending to the lamp compartment to provide a spring contact for engagement with one terminal of the battery, a lug carried by the casing for contact with the opposite battery terminal and a spring surrounding the lug and normally forcing the battery away from said lug.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ORVILLE D. YELLE.
