FINGER-GUARD FOR CUFF-PRESSES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nov. 11, 1919.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Janus E. DANN, citi- Cuff-Presses, of which the following is" a specification.
This invention relates to finger guards 'for small presses. The object of the invention is to provide a press for cuffs or other articles embodying improved means arranged to prevent the operator from getting her fingers caught and injured between the pressing members, said means operating, automatically without attention by the operator and not interfering in any way with the ordinary use of the press.
Further ob 'ects of the'invention are in part obvious and in part will appear more in detail hereinafter.
In the drawings, which represent one embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing the press closed; Fig. 2 is a front elevation; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation on a larger scale of the upper portion of the press showing the press open ready to i receive a cuff.
The invention may be applied to any form of press embodying a stationary pressing member and a cooperating pressing member having lateral motion relative to said stationary member and also pressing motion toward and from the same. The press shown in thedrawings comprises a, suitable frame including a basal and a standard 2 whose upper portion is curved or arched at 3 and supports the stationary upper pressing member 4. which is a hollow metal member heated by steam or other heating. medium circulated through its hollow chamber from the inlet pipe 5 to the outlet pipe 6. This member is usually of inverted V shape in front elevation; as shown in Fig. 2, adapting it particularly for use in pressing cuffs or wristbands, but this is not essential and the pressing members may be flat or of other shape depending upon the Character of work to be operated upon.
Beneath the member 1 is the cooperating lower pressing member 7 of complementary shape, and like the "upper member having a hollow chainbefthroughwhich heat.- ing' medium is circulated from the inlet pipe 8 to the outlet pipe 9. Said member 1S also preferably provided with suitable padding 10.
The lower pressing member is mounted upon a pressure rod or shaft 11 connected to suitable'operatlng mechanism and as shown its lower end has a hinge connected at 12 to the upper link 13 of a toggle and also to one of a pair of links M pivotally connected at 1 1- to the frame. Said links 14 compel the pivot 1.2 when actuated by the toggle to move in a generally vertical direction. The lower link 15 of the toggle is in fact one arm of a bell crank lever whose other arm 16 is formed as a foot treadle and poope'rates with the usual release treadle 16 17 is a guide rod connected at 18 to the lower pressing member, and which rod extends through an opening in the frame and is provided with a head 19 on its outer end. Said head and the compression spring 20 limit the outward movement of the lower pressing member when it is swung'out from the frame in the usual manner to remove or insert work, as shown in Fig. 3.
The finger guard forming the subject matter of the present invention may be made in several forms one of which is shown in the drawings. It comprises one or several members, two being shown, movably connected to one of the pressing members and held against the other by yielding pressure. The two guard members shown in the drawings are alike so that description of one will serve for both. Each comprises suitable brackets 21 located. on the front face of the upper pressing member and serving as supports for a shaft 22 to which are attached two depending arms 23 connected by a rod or shaft 24 carrying a roller or wheel 25-. Arms 23 are of such length that when the press is closed, as in Fig. ,1, the rods 24 and rollers 25 are in front of the lower pressing member and below its upper face,in which position they are yieldingly held by the coiled springs 26,215 will be readily understood.
, When the lower-pressing member is pulled movement the rollers ride over the work, for
example acufl, and hold it down on the lower pressing member, so that it is not likely to become d1sarrangedbefore-itis pressed. The rods 2i and arms 23 also serve to block the entrance to the space between the pressing members and prevent the operator from accidentally introducing her 5 fingers therein. When the lower pressing member is pushedfully into place the press can therefore be closed without danger of injury to the hands.
What I claim is I L; A pressing machine, comprising oooperating pressing members having relative motion toward and from each other and also relative lateral motion, and a finger guard pivotally mounted on one member and having 'moti'on across the pressing face of the other member during relative lateral motion between said members.
A pressing machine, comprising astationary pressing member, a cooperating pressing member having lateral motion relative to said stationary member, and a finger guard pivotally mountedon the stationary member and arranged to travel over the surface of the movable member during relative lateral mot-ion therebetween.
3. A pressing machine, comprising a stationary pressing member, a cooperating pressing member having lateral motion relative to said stationary member to enable the Work to be placed thereon and also having pressing motion toward and from the stationary member, and a finger guard on one of said members obstructing the enbrought to pressing relation.
5. .A pressing machine, comprising a stationary pressing member, a cooperating pressing member having lateral motion relative to said stationary member and also pressing motion toward and from the san'le,
and a finger guard on the stationary member obstructing the entrance to the space between said members and arranged to trave over the surface of the movable member when the press is being closed.
6. A pressing machine, comprising a stationar) pressi ngmembeiga coopera ting pressing member having lateral motion and motion toward and from thestationary member, and a. finger guard pivotally mounted on the stationary member obstructing the entrance to the space between said members and arranged to travel over the surface of the movable mcmber when the press is being closed.
