Be it lmown that I, ERBY B. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residin at Belen, in the county of Valencia and tate of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which 'the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pumps, and more especially to those having reciprocating pistons; and the object of the same is to produce an improved pump for oil wells and the like having meansby which the pump rod can be disconnected from the reciprocating valve and used to draw the pump barrel from the pump pipe and eventually from the well.
A further object is to permit the pump rod to be used to push the pump barrel again into place.
A particular object of the invention is to permit the entire withdrawal of the active parts of the pump for inspection and repair at the earths surface.
Details are set forth in the following specification and claims. In the drawing Figure 1 is a vertical section through this pump complete and Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The pump pipe is designated 1 and is here shown as having a coupling 2 at its lower end by which the section herein shown may be connected with other sections. v This pipe may be passed down into the'well with or without a well casing around it, but that has no bearing on the present invention. Immediately within the pump pipe is disposed a babbitt 3 externally ttlng closely the interior of the section of pump pipe, but internally tapering downward slightly as' shown. Next inside the babbitt is a lining 4 which has perforations in its body as shown at 5, this lining being preferably of copper or the like. Internally it is tapered to correspond with the taper of the babbitt. Next inside the lining isI the pump barrel 6 externally tapered to t withinl the lining and internally cylindrical; and screwed into the upper end of this barrel is an annular plug 7, the same having radial slots 8 and an enlarged head 9 at its upper end for a purpose yet to appear.
A ring-shaped nut 10 is screwed on the lower end of the pump barrel to hold in place a leather washer 11 whose purpose is to prevent leakage of Water between the barrel and the lining. A strainer or sand point Speccationof Letters Patent.

end being threaded at 17 to engage said nipple when desired and its upper end threaded at 18 to engage 'the sucker rod which is not shown in the drawings. -It is obvious that when this pump rod is engaged with the valve 13 and reciprocated, the valve will rise and fall within'the barrel and the pumping effect will be produced in a manner not necessary to amplify.
The coupling 20 at the upper end of the sand pipe has an internal annular enlargekment 21 producing upper and lower shoulders within its threads, and the head 9 of the plug 7 is adapted to contact with the upper shoulder when this plug is screwed into place. The valve rod 15 at its upper end carries a ring 27 connected with the rod by a spider 29 and capable of being borne down onto said head 9 to push the pump into the well or the well casing, and at this time the threads 17 at the lower end of this rod may be engaged with the nipple 14 of the valve 13. Said rod 15 Valso carries near its lower end Va ring 28 connected therewith by a spider as shown, whose function will now be described. VIivoted in the slot 8 of the plug are V-shaped latches 22, each having an outturned foot or hook 23, at the lower end of its outer leg adapted to engage beneath the shoulder 21 of the coupling 20, while its inner leg projects into the bore of the plug 7 and is adapted to be engaged by said ring 28. A spring 24 bears on the inner leg or tail 25 of the latch to hold it normally in the position illustrated at the top of Fig.-
1. When now the rod 15 is disconnected from the valve 13 and drawn upward, the ring 28 strikes the rails of the latches and turns them on their pivots so as to throw their hooks 23 out from under the shoulder 20, whereby the tubular plug is disconnected from the coupling 21, while it yet 'retains its connection with thev pump barrelV 6. Therefore, further upward movement of the rod l5 draws the barrel and its contents out of the lining so that it may be lifted to the earths surface for inspection and repair. Thereafter a reversal of movement of the rod causes the upper ring 27 to press down on the head 9 of the tubular plug, and as the latter is screwed into the barrel 6, this barrel and its contents may be pushed down into the well and restored to place. All this is accomplished by vertical movement of the valve rod 15. When this rod is turned, its threaded lower end may be engaged with or disengaged from the valve 13 without dislodging the barrel from place. The distance of the rings 27 and 28 apart should be sufficient to give free play for the recipro- Cation of the valve rod so that the pump may function.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make suchk changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to' secure by Letters Patent is l. In a pump, the combination with a pump pipe, a babbitt therein flaring upward, and a lining with the -babbitt and also iiaring upward; of a pump barrel removably fitting within the lining, a foot valve and a reciprocating valve within the barrel, a pump rod detachably connected with the reciprorating valve, an annular plug' in the upper end of the barrel, and two rings connected with the rod above and below the plug, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a pump of the type described, the combination with the pump pipe, a removable barrel therein, and an annular plug in the upper end of the barrel; of a foot valve, a reciprocating valve above the foot valve and having' a threaded nipple in its upper end, a pump rod threaded at its lower end to engage said nipple, and rings having spiders connecting them with the rod above and below said plug, for operation substantially as hereinbefore described.
3. In a pump of the type described, the combination with the pump pipe, a lining removably inserted therein and having its bore Haring upward, a pump barrel cylindrical on its interior and Haring upward on its exterior, and an annular plug in the upper end of said barrel; of a valve mounted in the barrel and having an internally threaded nipple at its upper end, a pump rod passing through said plug and threaded at its lower end to engage said nipple, and rings carried by the rod above and below the plug and adapted to be engaged therewith when the rod is disconnected from the nipple and reciprocated.

In a pump of the type described, the combination with the pump pipe, an upwardly flaring element therein, a barrel within said element externally flaring upward and internally cylindrical and with its lower end reduced, and an annular plug screwed into the upper end of the barrel; of a foot valve whose casing rests against the reduced lower end of the barrel, a reciprocate ing valve above the foot valve and having a threaded nipple in its upper end, a pump rod threaded at its lower end to engage said nipple, and rings having spiders connecting with the rod above and below said plug, for operation substantially as hereinbefore de scribed.
5. In a. pump, the combination with a pump pipe, a babbitt therein Haring upwardly, and a lining with the babbitt and also flaring upwardly; of a pump barrel removably fitting within the lining, a foot valve and a. reciprocating valve within the b( rrel, said reciprocating valve having a threaded nipple in its upper end, a pump rod threaded at its lower end to engage said nipple, an annular plug in the upper end of the barrel and two rings connected to the rod above and below the plug, for the purposes set forth.
6. In a pump of the type described, the combination with a pump pipe, a removable barrel therein, and an annular plug in the upper end of the barrel; of a foot valve and a reciprocating valve above the foot valve, a pump rod-detachably connected to the reciprocating valve, and rings having spiders connecting them with the rod above and below said plug, for operation substantially as set forth.
