Description

H. E. NEWMAN.
SECTIONM. POST.
APPLICATION HLD MAR. 20. 1919.
1,321,237. Patented Nov. 11, 1919.
A TTORMEYS UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
HENRY EDWARD NEWMAN, 0F SHOSI-IONE, IDAHO.
SECTIONAL Posn To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. NEWMAN, a citizen of the'United States, and a resi dent of Shoshone, in the county of Lincoln and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Posts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement'in' sec tional posts, and has for its object to provide a post, as for instance, a telephone, telegraph, or fence post, wherein that part which is within the ground and more liable to decay may be made of indestructible material or of wood resistant to decay, while that part outside the ground may be of other wood less resistant.
In the drawings Figure l is a front view of a post constructed in accordance with the invention,
Fig. 2 is a' similar view of another embodiment of the invention,
Fig. 3 is a similar view of another embodiment with parts in section,
Fig. 4 is a front view of another embodiment.
I11 the present embodiment of the invention, the post consists of a section 1 and a section 2, the section 1 being adapted to be placed within the ground as shown, while the section 2 is above the ground. Both sections are of wood in the present instance, and that section 1 below the ground may be of some wood not easily affected by dampness, as for instance, cypress or catalpa, while the upper section 2 may be of cheaper material, since it is not exposed to the action of dampness like that portion within the ground.
To connect the sections, there is provided upon the section 1 a tongue 3 which has its opposite side walls undercut or dove tailed as shown, and the lower end of the section 2- rests upon the broad upper surface of this tongue 3, it being understood that the tongue extends the full thickness of the post, and has a considerable thickness.
The sections are connected together by bars 4:, the said bars being secured to'the section 2 in any desired manner, and each. bar extends below the sectlon 2 and is pro vided at the said lower end with a rib 5 extending transversely of the bar andshaped to fit and fill the space between the Specification of Letters Patent. 7
sired manner, as for instance by screws or nails, by loops or wires, or by transversely arrangedbolts. The bars might be of the same thickness throughout their length as shown in Fig. 1, or they might be tapering.-
as'shown in Fig. 2.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 2, the post consistsof a base section 6 and a top section 7. The base section 6 is of plastic material capable of hardening, as for instance, concrete, and this base portion has at its upper end and at its opposite sides transverse grooves 8. The section 7 which is above the ground, is of any cross section, and of any shape, and it is held to the section 6 by means of bars 9 which are secured to the section 7 in any suitable or desired manner.
These bars as shown extend below the section 7 at their lower end and have transverse ribs 10 which are shaped to fit and fill the grooves 8. The bars 9 might be connected to the sections 7 in any suitable or desired manner, and the section 6 is suitably reinforced by reinforcing rods as indicated. v I
In Fig. 3 the post is composed of the upper'section 11 and the base section 12, and the base section is hollow, being a shell instead of a solid casting as shown in Fig. 2. This section 12- has transverse grooves 13 in its opposite side walls near its upper end, and these grooves are adapted to be engaged by transverse ribs 13 on bars '15 which are secured to the section 11.
In Fig. 4, the post is composed of the base section 16 and the top section 17. The base section is of plastic material capable of hardening, and the top section 17 is of wood or the like. The sections are held together by bars 18, which taper from their lower ends to their upper ends, and the lower ends have transverse ribs 19, which are adapted to engage similarly shaped grooves 20 in the base section. V
A bolt 21 is passed transversely of the Patented Nov. 11, 1919. Application filed March 20, 1919. Serial No. 283,831. i
post between the sections, through the bars extending the full width or" the post, and that the base sections may be made of any desired length to provide sufficient anchorage for the post.
The base sections when of plastic material may be reinforced in any preferred arrangement, and instead of being hollow as shown in Fig. 3, it is obvious that the said sections might be provided With a vertical opening for ventilation for the sake of light.
I claim 1. A post of the character specified, com prising a base sect-ion adapted to be inserted in the ground, and a top section to be above the ground, and a detachable connection between the sections, one of said sections having transverse grooves in its opposite side Walls, bars secured to the sections and having ribs engaging the grooves, the securing means for the bars comprising a bolt passing through the bars and between the abutting ends of the sections.
'2. A post of the character specified comprising a. base section and a top section, and means for detachably connecting the sections, said means comprising bars. secured to the top section and extending beyond the lower end ofthe said. section and having transverse ribs on their inner faces, the base section having grooves for engagement by the ribs.
HE N'RY EDWARD NEWMAN.
