SARAH PERRY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN GUIDES FOR HEMMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,101, dated October 8,1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH PERRY, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented an Improved Hemmer-Guide for Sewing=Machines, of which the following is a specification:
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of under plate; and Fig. 3 is an under-side view of upper plate.
This invention has relation to a guide for presenting cloth to a hemmer of a sewingmachine; and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the parts of a device by means of which the edge of the cloth is turned and guided to the hemmer in an automatic manner, substantially as hereinafter described.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents an L-shaped bed-plate for my improved hemmer-guide. At a is a slot through which passes a thumb-screw, used in attaching the guide to the cloth-plate of the sewingmachine. By means of said slot the device may be adjusted as close to or as distant from the hemmer as may be desired. B G represent vertical posts secured to the plate A at the points shown in the drawing. D designates the upper plate of the guide, which is laid on the plate A, and is perforated at B O to let the posts B 0 pass through. The plate D is constructed with a gage and folder consisting of two upright parallel plates, d, connected at their upper ends either as continuations of the plate D or otherwise. Between the plates d a space is left of sufficient width to receive and hold upright the edge of the cloth turned for the formation of the hem. The guide is arranged directly in front of the hemmer, and the cloth is inserted between the plates A D and the edge brought up between the gage-plates A, and afterward introduced into the hemmer. The function of the gage is to hold the cloth in an upright position so as to enable the hemmer to more easily produce the hem. The fold is kept of a uniform depth and a neat and even hem insured. The metal of the plate A is raised or made thicker at a part which lies directly below the plates (1 d in order to produce a block or ridge, (1. The
upper plate is similarly re-enforced at d but at a point close to the end of the plate adjacent to the plate d The contiguous edges of the blocks or re-enforcements d d run parallel to each other but in an oblique direction, as shown. The cloth, when placed between the plates A D, passes under (1 thence through the oblique crevice 01 over d and up between the plates cl. The parts 01 d have a tendency to direct the cloth toward the plates d, according as it is fed to the hemmer, and thus keep the work true and even. A small roller attached to the upper plate, and arranged in an oblique manner, will have the same efiect, and may be substituted for the blocks 01 01 The post 0 is encircled by a spiral spring, 0 and is provided with a thumb-screw, 1', working on a thread at its upper end. The spring is used for the purpose of pressing the plates A D together tightly enough to hold the cloth. The screw i is designed as a means of regulating the tension of said spring. The post B serves to keep the plates in their proper relative position.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The improved hemmer-guide, having the slotted plate A with posts B O, the plate D with upright parallel guides d, the spring and nut G i, and the oblique edge-blocks d d or their equivalents, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the adjustable bedplate A, having the oblique-edged block al with the movable top plate D provided with the oblique-edged block (1 and having the upright parallel guide-plates d so arranged that the edge of the cloth shall be fed to the hemmer between them, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the adjustable bedplate A having the post 0 holding the spring (J and nut i, and the pressure-plate D having the vertical guides d, substantially as specified.
SARAH PERRY.
