provide a machine of this character which is extremely simple in construction but which is efficient in operation, especially in forming short or sharply-curved scrolls. Further objects of the invention will appear hereinafter and will be embodied in their essential combinations, in the claims hereto annexed.
In the drawings forming part hereof, Figures 1, 2, and 3 represent plan views of the machine showing the operating lever and the cooperating drag or wiping block in various positions assumed during the rotation of the lever on its pivot; Fig. 4E represents an enlarged sectional view, on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3, through the block, lever and spring leaf; and Fig. 5 represents an enlarged sectional detail corresponding to the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Describing by reference characters the various parts illustrated herein, l denotes a suitable base of any desired construction, the base being provided with a horizontal upper surface from which there projects a stud 2. 3 denotes a block which is. ivotally supported on the stud. For the purpose of resisting the rotation of the block on the stud 2, the bottom wall t of the block is provided with a bore 10 extending outwardly through the face 6, the inner end of the bore being enlarged. In the enlarged portion of the bore a brass block 11 is mounted which is adapted to bear directly against the stud 2, the outer end of the block being engaged by a set screw 13 threaded into the base of the block.
1 1 denotes a lever which is pivoted on a stud 15 arranged adjacent to the stud 2 and projecting upwardly from the base plate 1. This lever is provided near its pivot with a metallic block 16 constituting a scroll form, which block is provided with a hooked end 17 partly surrounding the stud 15 and having its inner surface concentrio with said stud and spaced therefrom a distance sufficient to receive therewithin the eye of a spring plate. Substantially opposite the end of the hook, the block is provided with an inclined face 18, thereby insuring ample space between the hook 17 and the block for the reception of the spring plate when the eye thereof is applied to the stud. The outer curved surface of the hook 17 merges with the plane surface 16 of the scroll form, this surface being substantially parallel with the surface 6 of the block 3 when the parts are in final position. At a suitable distance from the pivot, the lever is provided with a notch 19 which is adapted to receive the lug 8.
With the parts constructed as described, the operation will be as follows: The eye 20 of a spring plate 21 is applied to the stud 15, in the recess provided therefor within the hooked end of the form 16, the spring leaf being interposed between the lever and the wall 6 of the block 3. The lever is then operated in the direction indicated by the arrows and, when the spring plate bears against the block 3, the end of the hook l7 bears against the spring plate adjacent to the eye 20 and the plate begins to bend at this point. Further rotation of the lever, in'conjunction with the block 3, causes the plate to be drawn around and closely fit the outer surface of the hook. The surface of the spring plate adjacent to the block 3 is engaged by the corner 6", and this corner exerts a drag or wiping effect upon the spring which causes it to conform closely to the outer surface of the form 16, the pivotal movement of the block 3 not only accommodating this movement but serving to comress the plate between itself and the adacent wall of .the block 16. The pivoting of the block 3 enables it to accommodate itself automatically to the movement of the lever, while exerting the necessary drag upon the plate to make it conform to the scroll former. By adjusting the set-screw, this drag may be varied to suit the conditions of any partieularcase. When the parts are in the final position, the adjacent surfaces of the blocks 3 and 16 are parallel and the lug 8 is within the recess 19, the lug forming a seat for the bottom of the spring plate whereby distortion is prevented through any unintentional vertical movement of the plate within the space formed between said blocks.
Tn operating upon particularly heavy plates it may be advisable to give a preliminary bending to the same, in which case the block 3 may be removed and such preliminary bending be accomplished in conjunction with the stud. After the preliminary bending is accomplished, the lever will be returned to the initial position shown in Fig. 1, the block 3 applied to its pivot, the set screw 13 adjusted to secure the desired amount of resistanre to the rotation of the said block and its accon'nnodation of the spring plate, and the final bending operation will be accomplished in substantially the same manner as hereinbefore set forth.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim is 1. In a bending machine, the combination of a base, a scroll form pivoted on the base, and a block cooperating with said form to confine a plate therebetween, said block be ing pivoted to the base eccentrically at that part of the block nearest to the pivot of the form, to exert a drag or wiping effect upon said plate.
2. The combination, with a suitable supporting base, of a block pivoted to said base and having a recess, a pin projecting from the base and located within said recess to form a pivot for the block, said block having a hooked end extending partly around the pivot and spaced therefrom and having its outer surface constituting a scroll form, and a cooperating block pivotally supported on the base and having a. projection adapted to engage the outer side of a spring plate the inner surface of which is adapted to be bent into engagement with the scroll form.
3. In a machine of the character set forth, the combination, with a suitable base, of a scroll form, said form being pivotally connected to the base and having a hook extending partly around such pivot and forming a recess, said form having a substantially plane surface with which the hook merges, and a cooperating block pivotally supported on the base adjacent to the form and having a plane surface adapted to be brought substantially parallel with theplane surface of the form and provided with a corner adapted to engage a. plate and exert a drag or wiping effect upon the same as the form is rotated on its pivot. 7

The combination, with a base, of a scroll form pivoted thereto, said form having a hook extending partly around such pivot and providing a recess for the re ception of a spring eye, the outer curved surface of such form merging with a substantially plane surface, a cooperating block or member pivotally connected to the base adjacent to said form and having a plane surface adapted to be brought adjacent to and parallel with the first mentioned plane surface and a portion adapted to engage the plate and exert a drag or wiping action upon the same to make it conform to the scroll form, and adjustable means for re sisting the rotation of the block on its pivot.
5. The combination, with a base, of a scroll form pivoted thereto, a cooperating block or member pivotally connected to the base adjacent to said form and having a portion adapted to engage the plate and exert a drag or wiping action upon the same to make it conform to the scroll form, and means for resisting therotation of the block on its pivot.
6. The combination, with a base, of a scroll form pivoted thereto, said form having a hook extending partly around such pivot and providing a recess for the reception of a spring eye, the outer curved surface of such form merging with a substantially plane surface,a cooperating block or member pivotally connected to the base adjacent to said form and having a plane surface adapted to be brought adjacent to and parallel with the first mentioned plane surface and a portion adapted to engage the plate and exert a drag or wiping action upon the same to make it conform to the scroll form, and adjustable means for resisting the rotation of the block on its pivot, the face of the block which is parallel with the plane surface of the scroll form when the parts are in final position being provided with a lateral lip at its bottom for the support of the spring plate.
7. In a machine of the character set forth, the combination, with a scroll form, of a block pivoted adjacent thereto with a corner presented toward the form and adapted to exert a drag or wiping effect upon a spring plate which is applied to said form, and means for rotating the said form.
