SWIMMING APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FEDKO FEDZYNA, a citizen of Russia, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swimming Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in devices for assisting swimmers in propelling themselves through the water.

The principal object of the invention is terial part of this disclosure, and in which Figure l is a top plan view showing a swimming apparatus made in accordance with the invention.

Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view, taken on line 33 of Fig. 5.

Referring to the drawings, the apparatus will be seen to comprise a saddle shaped block 10, preferably made of wood, having a narrow front extending portion 11. The

' upper portion of the block is formed with a concave upper surface 12, extending longitudinally of the apparatus.

nectedby a band 20 near their outer ends, in which are secured rings 21, and a pair of similar snap hooks 22 engageable in the front eyes 15.

Formed near the bottom of the block 10, is a longitudinal slot 24, and transversely disposed through the wider portion of the block is a shaft 25, and fixed midway in its length, within the slot 24, is a sprocket 26, over which is traineda chain 27, passing over a similar but larger sprocket wheel 28, mounted on a spindle 29, rotatably mounted transversely in the narrow part 11 of the saddle, the extending ends of the spindle having secured upon them cranks 30, by which rotary motion may be communicated by the operator to the shaft 25.

The outer ends of the shaft 25, which are suitably journaled within the block 10, have fixed upon them spur gears 32, meshing with spur pinions 33 fixed upon sleeves 34 rotating on studs 35 fixed in the upper portion of the saddle block 10, the construction being solidly bolted together by U bolts 36 passing through open slots 37 formed vertically through the block 10 and held in position by nut 38.

To the outer ends of the sleeves 34 are secured plates 40, the sleeves being held in 0perable position by nuts 41. Extending laterally out from the plates 40, are uniformly spaced pairs of paddles 42, the axis of r0- tation of the paddles being substantially' level with the surface of the water in which the apparatus floats.

In operation, the person using the apparatus is disposed at length comfortably upon the cushion 17, previously inflated so as to partially support the weight of the operator, who grasps the handles 30 and turning the same in an obvious manner, transmits power through the train of gears to the sleeves, causing the paddles 42 to operate in erable distance, and as a lifesaving apparatus.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a. swimming apparatus, the combination with a saddle shaped floating block and a pneumatic cushion engaged therewith adapted to receive the person in a recumbent position thereon, a shaft journaled transversely in said block, a pairvof manually operable cranks in the forward end of said block, connections between said cranks and said shaft, and pairs of laterally extending paddles adapted to rotate in a longitudinal axis, the axis of said paddles being substantially level with the surface of the water in which said apparatus floats.

2. In a swimming apparatus, the combination with a saddle shaped buoyant block having a narrow extending front portion,
