Description

WLIAI LCH,V0F OSHAWA, ONTARIO, CANAIDA.
mANDED-ETAI. PRODUCT. i
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct 28, 1919.
Original application led November 2, 1915, Serial No. 59,811. Divided and this application filed February 28, 1918. serial m1. 81,052.
vTo whom it may concer'n.:
Be it known that I, WILIJAMlAcH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Oshawa, inthe Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expanded-Metal Products, of which the following is the specification.v
This invention relates to improvements in expanded metal product and particularly to that type of product having alternate expanded and non-expanded or ribbed sections,
- and the objects of the'invention are to` prolmanner hereinafter set forth and described.
It is already well known in the art to provide expanded metal product -having expanded portions and non-expanded portions and in which the non-expand'ed portions are corrugated `1ongitudinally. I have found I that it is possible to give increased strength of the invention.
to this product by upsetting the oorrugations, as for example, by passing them through suitable dies.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a plan view of an embodiment Fig. 2 is a cross section. A
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail of dies which will be used for manufacturing the invention;
Like characters of reference refer to like parts inthe several figures. p
The process for manufacturing the Sheet of expanded metal having expanded portions and non-expanded ribbed portions may be of any suitable Character. I prefer, however, that the manufacture of the product to this stage should be carried out according to the process set forth and described in Patent No. 1,189.369. July 4, 1916` from which this application is divided.
The product resulting from this process is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in which 10 are the unexpanded plain portions having ribs 40' 43', which lower die is formed with pivoted i` wings 44 and 45 normally held a short distance above the base piece 46 by Springs 47 and 48 and being designed to be closed down against the tongue when the die 41' moves downwardly.
` In practice the die 41' will be connected to the movable part of 'a hydraulic press and strips of the product of convenient length, say sixteen feet, will be placed in position in it and the die operated to close the rib 40' and at the same time upset the corrugations.
The product produced by this method has many advantages; 'in particular, the final upsetting of the corrugations above described gives increased strength to the nonexpanded portions and in fact may be caused to increase the gage thereof.
AIt may be noted that the shortening of the unexpa'nded or' unslitted portions in the process described will substantially equal the shortening of the slitted portion by their lateral expansion.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many 'apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accomp-anving specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrativ'e and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
An expanded metal product having alternate expanded and entire metal parts. the entire metal parts being first formed with transversely extending corrugations. which corrugations are then flattened` whereby the metal is'thickened at the corrugations by an upsetting operation.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my vhand in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM LoAcH.
