Description

C. Y. McLEO'D. DRAINAGE system FOR CONCRETE -CELLARS, VAULTS, BASEM'ENTS APRLICATION FILED JULY 9, i919.
Patented Oct. 28, 1919.
COLEMAN Y. lVIoLEOD, OF CLARKSDALE, MISSISSIPPI.
DRAINAGE SYSTEM FOR CONCRETE CELLARS, VAULTS, BASEMENTS, 8w.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2c, 1919.
Application filed. July 9, 1919. Serial No. 309,662.
To all whomc't may concern;
Be it known that I, COLEMAN Y. MOLEOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarksdale, in the county of Coahoma and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Drainage Systems for Concrete Cellars, Vaults, Basements, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to draining systems, and more particularly to a draining system employed in connection with cellars or vaults.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a draining system which will drain the soil or earth, in which the cellar is built, thereby insuring against the possibility of water or dampness seeping through the walls of the cellar.
A further object of the invention is to provide means to efficiently drain the inte rior of the cellar, in the event that it be comes necessary to flush the cellar for sanitary purposes.
A still further object of the invention is to drain the earth around the cellar, from various localities to a common basin, and carry off the drainage by means of a central discharge pipe.
WVith these and other objects in vlew which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a sectional view through a cellar with a draining system constructed in accordance with my invention, installed.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, before the cellar floor is set up; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cellar with the floor thereof constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Referring now to the drawing in detall, the reference characters 5 indicate side walls of a cellar or vault, of suitable thickness and formed of plastic material, such as concrete.
The floor or base 6, of the cellar is also formed of plastic material and is slightly inclined toward a common center as at 7, where the same is formed with a substantially square opening 8, in which is positioned the drain tile 9 having the usual apertures 10 therein to permit of fluid passing therethrough and at the same time restrictmg the passage of particles which might tend to clog or otherwise render the system moperative.
Disposed under the opening 8 and centrally of the floor is a catch basin 11 which includes the base section 12 of concrete or other suitable material, said base being apertured as at-13 to receive the drain pipe 14 whlch, in turn is provided with openings 15 in the end 16 thereof, which end 16, extends above the base 12 of the catch basin to receive water, while the opposite end 17, extends downwardly a suitable distance into the earth and is also provided with apertures 18 to exhaust fluid from said pipe 14:.
The catch basin 11 also includes side walls 19 which extend upwardly from the base 12 and terminate flush with the underside of the cellar floor 6, to guard against water leaking through, at this point.
Openings 20 are disposed in the sidewalls 19, of the catch basin 11, and receive the inner ends 21 0f the inclined drain tiles 22, said inner ends 21 thereof extend beyond the inner walls 19 to insure the discharge of water within the catch basin 11, the outer ends 23 of said drain tiles 22, terminating at a point. beyond the side walls 5 of the cellar, thereby draining the earth around the cellar, at a point beyond the vertical plane of the side walls 5, consequently, draining the earth around the cellar, before the water or moisture can reach the walls 5 of the cellar.
Inclosed within the catch basin 11, and adapted to house the upper end 16 of the drain pipe 14 is an auxiliary chamber having side walls 24: formed of suitable porous material to permit fluid to pass from the main catch basin 11 into the auxiliary chamber, the side walls 24 thereof being spaced from the walls of the catch basin to permit water to collect therebetween, from where the water is carried off by the drain pipe 1 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a draining system for cellars having an inclined floor, and having a central drain opening, a catch basin disposed under the drain opening, said catch basin including outer walls, an interior auxiliary chamber having walls of porous material spaced from the outer walls to provide a receiving compartment, means for discharging fluid In testimony that I claim the foregoing as into the receiving compartment, a pipe havmy own, I have hereto affixed my signature 10 ing one ofbits enids extending iritolthe auxilin the presence of two witnesses. ial chem er tie 0 osite enc t ereof eX- 5 teli ding into the gr ii nd surface under the COLEMAN MCLEOD' cellar, and each end of said pipe having Witnesses: openings to permit a flow of fluid there- GLENN LACY, through.
