To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL E. CHRISTOPHEL, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Pearl River, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Feeding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sheet-feeding machines and has forits primary object to provide improved means for registering sheets as they are fed from a pile to some other machine, such as a. printing press, folding machine, etc. One of the objects of my invention is to provide improved sheetregistering means accordin to which that edge of the sheet which strikes against the gage, is stilfened by being warped or crimped along lines extending transversely to the gage or plate which registers its positions. Specific objects of invention reside in the peculiar means provided for warping or crimping the front edge of a sheet as well as either lateral edge of said sheet. Another object is to .provide improved tripoff means for interrupting the operation of the machine whenever a sheet fails to register properly. Ancillary objects of invention are found in the means for releasing or discontinuing the operation of the sheet-crimping means on either or both sides of the machine. `Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which exemplify my invention in a preferred embodiment.

In' the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, the sheet-feeding means includes feed tapes 1 passing at their forward ends about roller 2 which extends transversely of the machine. As shown best in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, arod 3 which may be reciprocated by any suitable means (not shown on the drawings), is pivotally connected at 4 to a cam 5 on a cam shaft 6. The cam 5 has concentrically vspaced peripheral portions 5EL and 5b with aninterposed notch or recess 7. Extendingradially from the shaft 6 and centrally disposed with respect to notch 7 is a rib or tooth 8 which is adapted to engage in a notch 9 formed in a plate or segment 10 which is keyed to a rock shaft 11. The plate or segment 10 comprises two angularly arranged wings 12 with circular faces 13 Vwhich are adapted to slidably fit the circumferential portions 5a and 5b and to alternately lock the rock shaft 11 against movement for periods after each oscillation by the tooth 8. The connection between the cam shaft G and rock shaft 11 constitutes a form of Geneva gear. Referring to F ig. 13, an irregularly shaped bracket is shown which comprises a body portion 14 with upwardly projecting bearing lugs 15 and 16 which slidably engage the rock shaft 6 so as to be adjustable longitudinally of said shaft. For this purpose, the bearing lug 16 is provided with a laterally projecting sleeve 17 which is threaded eXteriorly for the reception of thumb nuts 18 and 19. Interposed between the thumb nuts 18 and 19 is the boss 20 carried by an arm or lever 21 which projects upwardly from a boss 22 which is keyed to a rod 23 which extends transversely across the machine. The boss 20 thus constitutes a fixed abutment relatively to which the bracket 14 may be adjusted by manipulating the thumb nuts 18 and 19. The body portion 14 of the bracket is grooved to form oppositely disposed guiding surfaces 241 and back of said guiding surfaces a recess with guiding surfaces 24 for accommodating the bifurcated hub of a movable gripping jaw to be hereinafter referred to. Extending laterally from the body portion of the bracket is a plate or flange 25 (see Fig. 13) which as shown in Fig. 14, is provided with spaced downwardly projecting bearing flanges 26 which straddle the rod 23, thereby serving to guide the bracket whenever it is adjusted. Between the guiding surfaces 241 is mounted a slide comprising a solid block portion 27, a lower flange or plate 28 and an upper flange or plate 29 beveled below at its outer end and provided in its top surface with a skew rack 30. The rack 30 meshes with a segmental skew gear 31 provided with a hub 32 which is keyed to the rock shaft 11. It will thus be understood that whenever the shaft 11 is rocked on its axis the slide 27 will be reciprocated transversely of the direction of feed imparted to a sheet by the tapes 1. The slide 27 carries a pin 33, the oppositely projecting ends thereof serving to pivot the deflected bearing portions 34 of a movable gripper jaw 35. The lower flange or plate 28 constitutes a fixed gripper j aw relatively to which said jaw 35 opens and closes. Projecting from one of the bearing portions 34 is an arm 36 which is shown best in Figs. 10 and 11, which carries a pin 37, upon which pivots a trip lever or dog comprising a cam arm 38 provided with a roller 39 and a lever arm 40. The lever arm 40 is adapted to abut against a shoulder 41 provided on the arm 36 of the movable jaw and to force said jaw into' open position in the manner to be hereinafter pointed out. Coperating with the cam roller 39 at certain times during the operation of the machine, is a cam bar 42 provided with spaced integral plates 43 which project upwardly therefrom and by mea-ns of which said cam bar is secured to the adjustable bracket by means of screws 44. Secured to the bracket 14 is a plate or bar 45 which carries at its rear end a boss 46 in which is threaded a screw abutment 47 which is adapted to engage the arm 40 of the trip dog to force it into the position shown in Fig. 11 whenever the slide 27 is moved to its right hand eXtreme position. Projecting rearwardly from the left hand end of the movable jaw 35, is a pin 48 which serves to journal a` roller 49 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 12). As the jaw is raised and lowered, the roller 49 serves to operate a crimping device which will now be described. Extending rearwardly from the bracket 14 is an arm 50 carrying a laterally projecting pin 51 on which is pivotally mounted a crimper by means of spaced bearing lugs 52. Said crimper comprises an upper flange 53 (see Fig. 14) which is engaged by the roller 49 and a lower flange 54 which is adapted when lowered into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 14, to crimp or warp a sheet along its edge which is being moved to a gage and thus to stiffen it to resist the impact due to its momentum. The thumb screw 55 which is threaded in the crimper is adapted to adjustably engage a flange or lug 56 which projects laterally from the arm 50 of the bracket, thus adapting the crimper to be held in raised position on either side of the machine. A sheet gage 57 is secured byscrews 58 to the bracket 14 and partakes of the adjustments of said bracket. As shown in Fig. 11, the lower flange 54 of the crimper is deflected downwardly at 54a adjacent the side gage 57. It will also be noted in Fig. 12, that said lower flange inclines forwardly as shown by the dotted line 541 so that the crimping effect is widened and deepened as the edge of the sheet approaches the side gage. Means are provided for imparting a normal tendency to press the movable jaw down onto the fixed jaw of the gripper by a spring 59 which is secured at one end to a pin 60 rigid with the bracket 14 and at its other end is engaged by a pin 61 carried by a knurled nut 62' provided with notches 63 by means of which said nut may be engaged by radial pins 64 carried by the pin 33 which moves with the movable jaw. llhe tension on said movable jaw may thus be adjusted to meet requirements.
Referring now to Figs. 3 to 6, the cam 5 is provided with an annular slot 66 within which is adjustably mounted a bolt 67 which is threaded to receive a clamping nut 68 on one side of the cam 5, while on the outer face of the cam it carries a lug or abutment 69 which is adapted at certain times to engage a lug or shoulder 70 on :t bar 71. Said bar 71 is pivotally mounted at 7 2 on the upper arm of a lever 7 3 which is pivoted on a stud 74, the lower arm of said lever being pivotally connected at 75 with the forward end of the rod 76 which is adapted to operate a trip-off mecha.-
nism (not shown on the drawings). The forward end of the bar 71 rests upon a pin 77 which projects laterally from a lever arm 78 which is keyed to a transverse shaft 79. Depending from the shaft 79 is a lever arm 80 from which is pivotally suspended at 81, on either side of the machine, a detector finger 82 which is adapted to engage in the hole or depression 83 in the front plate 84 whenever a sheet does-not cover such opening or depression. Projecting upwardly and rearwardly from the shaft 79 is a cam arm 85 which carries a roller 86 which normally engages the cam 5 when the holes or depressions 83 are covered b-y a sheet. Whenever such holes are not covered by a sheet, the detector fingers 82 catch thereon as shown in Fig. 5, so that the cam lroller 86 is prevented from following into the inner run 87 of the cam 5. The cam 5 is also provided with an intermediate run 88 into which a cam roller 89 is adapted to follow at certain times. Said cam roller 89 is carried by a cam arm 90 which is keyed to a rock shaft 91 which also carries a lever arm 92 in the outer end of which is mounted an adjustable a'butment 93 which is adapted to rest on the cam shaft 6. A spring 94 is connected at opposite ends to the cam arms 85 and 90 and thus serves to draw these arms toward the cam 5. Rock shaft 91 is adapted to operate a combined slow-down and crimping device which will now be described. On either side of the machine or on both sides thereof, the rock shaft 91 according to the present embodiment of my invention, carries a bifurcated crimping device 95 with forwardly projecting fingers 96 which are adapted to be raised and lowered by the oscillations of the rock shaft 91. Coperating therewith is an upper crimping device or finger 97, said upper finger being carried by a bracket 98 which is secured by a set screw 99 on the stationary cam shaft 6. n Figs. 3 and 4, is shown a front sheet gage 100. The operation of the feeding mechanism will now be readily understood and briefly described is as follows:
As a sheet isfed forwardly by the tapes 1, the rock shaft 11 is oscillated by the Geneva connection with cam 5 to move the reciprocatory gripper inwardly. At the end of its last outward movement, the' dog has been moved into vertical position shown in Figs. 10 and 11, thus raising the movable gripper aw 35 so that the sheet in its forward movement passes between' said jaws. These movements are brought about vby the cam 5 moving in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 3, the process of rocking shaft 11 being shown in Fig. 5, after which the open jaws remain in their innermost positionV for a brief period of time. At the same time, the vmovement of said camv 5 has permitted the rock shaft 91 to move the lower crimping elements'of the front crimpers into the position shown in Fig. 7, the relative positions of the crimping elements being shown in Fig. 9. As the sheet moves forward the retardation is gradually increased until it slows vdown and comes into engagement with the front gage 100. At the same time, the sheet becomes warped in such a way as to form reinforcing flutings which strengthen it to resist the impact on gage 100. As the cam 5 begins its return movement in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 4, the front edge crimpers release the sheet, after which a return oscillation is imparted to the rock shaft 11 which in turn moves the slide 27 outwardly. At the commencement of this movement, the dog 38 is displaced by its engagement with the cam bar 42 and thus releases the movable gripper 35 which falls upon the sheet and clamps it to the fixed gripper jaw to move it laterally toward the side gage. Asthe movable jaw drops, the lateral crimper falls into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 14, in which its lower flange 54 depresses a portion of the sheet below its plane of movement and as the lateral edge continues its movement the retarding tendency thereof gradually increases until it is brought to a full stop against the side gage. At the end of its outward movement, the dog 38 is again forced into position to open the gripper when after a brief period of rest during which the sheet is drawn from the feeder, the same operation is repeated.
I claim:
1. In a machine of the character described, sheet-feeding means, a side gage, means for moving said sheet toward said side gage, and means for crimping the edge of said sheet to stiffen it against its impact against said side gage, said crimping means being disposed at a fixed distance from said side gage and under the control of said means for moving the sheet toward said side gage.
2. In a machine of the character described, sheet-feeding means, a sheet-gage, a gripper reciprocable relatively to said sheet-frage, said gripper comprising fixed and movable jaws, and a dog movably mounted on said movable gripper jaw and adapted to be actuated by the reciprocatory movement of said gripper for operating said movable jaw, said movable jaw being held by said dog throughout the movement of said gripper in one direction,
3. In a machine of the character described, a guide, a gripper reciprocable in said guide, said gripper including a movable jaw, a cam extending adjacent the line of travel of i said gripper, and a dog movable on said movable gripper jaw and adapted to be engaged by said cam for holding said movable jaw in open position during the movement of said gripper in one direction and held in position permitting said movable jaw to remain closed during the movement of said gripper in the opposite direction.

5. In a machine of the character described, sheet-feeding means, a sheet-gage, a gripper reciprocable with respect to said gage, said gripper having a rigid j aw and a jaw pivotally mounted on said rigid jaw, a cam bar,
and means carried by said pivot/ally mounted j aw for engaging said cam bar and holding said pivotally mounted jaw in open position during the movement of said gripper 5 in one direction and permitting said jaw to close during the movement in the other direction, said cam bar engaging means comprising a dog pivotally mounted on the pivotally mounted gripper javv and movable into rigid abutment against said janT for dis- I placing the same.
6. In a machine of the character described, sheet-feeding means, a sheet-gage, a gripper reciprocable with respect to said gage, said 3 5 gripper having a rigid jaw and a jaw pivotally mounted on said rigid j aw, a cam bar, anda cam engaging' dog pivotally mounted on the pivotally mounted gripper jaw and movable into rigid abutment against said jaw for dis- 40 placing the same, and a fixed abutment a trip lever pivoted on said pivotally mounted jaw to swing to and fro between active and inactive positions, said trip lever comprising a cam arm for engaging said cam bar and a lever arm adapted to positively engage a contiguous portion of said pivoted jaw when said trip lever is in active position, and means becoming operative at one end of the reciprocatory movement of said gripper for moving said trip lever into active position.
8. In a machine of the character described, sheet-feeding means, a sheet-gage, a gripper reciprocable With respect to said gage, said gripper having a rigid jaw and a jaw pivotally mounted on said rigid jaw, a cam bar,
and means carried by said pivotally mounted jaw for engaging said cam bar and holding said pivotally mounted javir in open position during the movement of said gripper in one direction and permitting said aw to close during the movement in the other direction, said cam bar engaging means comprising a dog pivotally mounted on the pivotally mounted gripper jaw and movable into rigid abutment against said jaw for displacing the same, and a xed abutment against Which said dog is forced by the reciprocation of said gripper to move said dog into rigid abutment against said pivotally mounted jaw, said dog being retained in rigid abutment against said jaiv by its positive engagement with said cam bar, said dog being displaced by said cam bar to release said pivotally mounted j avv by a movement of the gripper in reversed direction.
9. In a machine of the character described, sheet-feeding means, a sheet-gage, a reciprocable gripper for moving a sheet against said sheet-gage, said gripper comprising relatively movable javvs, and means relatively to which said gripper reciprocates and controlled by the relative movement of said jaws for crimping that edge of the sheet which is presented to said sheet-gage.
10. In a machine of the character described, sheet-feeding means, a sheet-gage, a slide reciprocable with respect to said sheetgage, said slide being provided With a rigid gripper jaw, a second gripper jaw pivotally connected to the first mentioned gripper jaw, means under the control of the reciprocatory movement of said slide for opening and closing said gripper jaws, and a sheet-crimping instrumentality oscillatable on a fixed axis and operated by said movable jaw.
11. In a machine of the character described, sheet-feeding means, a sheet-gage, a stationary shaft, a cam journaled on said shaft, a bracket secured to said shaft, a crimping member carried by said bracket, a rock shaft operated by said cam, and a crimping member mounted on said rock shaft to coperate With the crimping member carried by said bracket.
12. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a sheet gage, of a gripper for moving a sheet up to said gage, said gripper having relatively movable jaws, and a sheet crimping instrumentality relatively to which said gripper moves a sheet, said sheet crimping instrumentality being movable into and out of crimping engagement with said sheet during its movement toward said sheet gage.
13. In a machine of the character described, a sheet gage, a gripper reciprocable with respect to said sheet gage, means for opening and closing said gripper, and sheet crimping means including an instrumentality oscillatable about an axis extending lengthwise of the reciprocatory movement of sai d gripper and adapted to be oscillated by the opening and 'closing movements of said gripper.
14. In a machine of the character described, a sheet gage, a sheet crimper normally disposed in the plane of movement of a sheet, sheet gripping means for moving said sheet toward said gage and past said crimper, and means operated at the end of the gripper movement for opening said gripper and moving said crimper away from the plane of movement of said sheet.
15. In a machine of the character described, a sheet gage, a gripper reciprocable relatively to said sheet gage, and sheet crimping means operatedv by and rela-tively to which said gripper reciprocates.
16. In a machine of the character described, a sheet gage, means for feeding a sheet, means for crimping a sheet as itis presented to said gage, and a sheet gripper reciprocable relatively to said gage and sheet crimping means for moving said sheet against said gage, said grippen being adapted to operate said sheet crimping means by its movement relative thereto.
17. In a machine of the character `described, a sheet gage, a reciprocable gripper for moving a sheet up to said sheet gage, said gripper having relatively movable jaws,
a trip lever pivotally mounted on one of said jaws, said trip lever comprisinga cam arm and a lever arm adapted to be brought into positive abutment with a contiguous portion of said gripperwhen said trip lever is in active position, and a cam suitably disposed to be engaged by said cam arm in active position for holding the jaws of said 'gripper open.
18. In a machine of the character described, a sheet gage, a reciprocable gripper for moving a sheet up to said gage, a trip lever pivotally mounted on said gripper to swing to and fro between `operative and inoperative positions, and means operating throughout the movement of said gripper in one direction for holding said trip lever in operative position, said holding means being adapted to permit said trip lever to assume its inoperative position throughout the movement of said gripper in the opposite direction, said trip lever in operative position being adapted to render said gripper inoperative.
19. In a machine of the character described a sheet gage, a gripper movable toward and away from said sheet gage, said gripper being provided with a movable jaw, a cam arm pivotally mounted on said movable jaw, a cam bar extending parallel to the path of said gripper and with which said cam arm cooperates, said movable jaw in closed position being adapted to retain the pivot of said cam arm nearer to the cam bar than the length of said cam arm and'means for holding said Cam arm normal to 'said cam barduring the movement of said gripper away from said sheet gage for holding said movable jaw open.
20. In a machine of the character described, a sheet gage, a gripper movable toward and away from said sheet gage, said gripper being provided with a movable jaw, a cam bar arranged parallel to the path of said Gripper7 and a `cam arm pivoted on said mova le jaw, said cam arm being movable into an active position in which it is held during said grippers movement away from the sheet gage for holding said movable iaw open, and adapted to assume an inactive position in which it is retained by the movable jaw in closed position during` the movement of said gripper toward said sheet gage.
21. In a sheet feeding machine a sheet crimping instrumentality oscillatable about an axis, a sheet gage normal to said axis, and a sheet gripper movable toward and away from said sheet gage for moving a sheet across said sheet crimping instrumentality to said sheet gage, said sheet gripper operatably engaging said sheet crimping instrumentality for oscillating the latter on its axis.
22. In a sheet feeding machinrl a sheet crimping instrumentality oscillatable about an aXis, a sheet gage normal to said axis, and a sheet gripper movable toward and away from said sheet gage for moving a sheet across said sheet crimping instrumentality to said sheet gage, said sheet gripper comprising relatively movable jaws of which one operatably engages said sheet crimping instrumentality for imparting the crimping movements thereto.
23. In a sheet feeding machine a sheet crimping instrumentality oscillatable about an axis, a sheet gage normal to said axis, and a sheet gripper movable toward and away from said sheet gage for moving a sheet across said sheet crimping instrumentality to said sheet gage, said sheet gripper comprising a rigid jaw, a movable jaw, and means operated by the movement of said gripper for operating said movable jaw, said movable jaw having operating engagement with said sheet crimping instrumentality.
24. In a sheet feeding machine, a sheet crimping instrumentality oscillatable about an aXis and comprising a lower sheet crimping flange, a sheet gage, agripper jaw reciprocable with respect to said crimping instrumentality and sheet gage, a gripper jaw movably connected to the rst mentioned gripper jaw and operatably engaging the upper flange of said sheet crimping instrumentality. i
25. In a sheet feeding machine a sheet crimping instrumentality oscillatable about an aXis and comprising a lower sheet crimping flange, a sheet gage, a gripper jaw reciprocable with respect to said crimping mstrumentality and sheet gage, a gripper jaw movably connected to the first mentioned gripper jaw and operatably engaging the upper flange of said sheet crimping instrumentality, a dog or lever for operating said movable gripper jaw, and means for operating said dog or lever to throw said movable gripper jaw into open position at one end of the grippers movement.
26. ln a sheet feeding machine, a sheet crimping instrumentality oscillatable about an axis and comprising a lower sheet crimping flange, a sheet gage, a gripper jaw reciprocable with respect to said crimping instrumentality and sheet gage, a gripper jaw movably connected to the irst mentioned gripper jaw and operatably engaging the upper flange of said sheet crimping instrumentality, said gripper being provided with a guide or track for holding said dog or lever in operative position during the movement of said gripper away from said sheet gage.
27. In a sheet feeding machine, a sheet crimping instrumentality movable into and out of sheet crimping position, a sheet gage, a reciprocable sheetvgripper for moving a sheet across said sheet crimping instrumentality t0 said sheet gage, said gripper being provided with a rackan oscillatable shaft, a gear mounted on said shaft and meshing with said rack, a guide or track, said sheet gripper comprising relatively movable jaws, and a lever ordog mounted on one of said jaws and slidably engaging said guide or track for holding saidA jaws open during the movement of said sheet gripper away from said sheet gage.
28. I n a sheet feeding machine, a sheet crimping instrumentality movable into and out of sheet crimping position, a sheet gage, a reciprocable sheet gripper for moving a a sheet across said sheet crimping instrumentality to said sheet gage, said gripper being provided with a rack, an oscillatable shaft, a gear mounted on said shaft and meshing with said rack, a guide orv track, said sheet gripper comprising relatively movable jaws, and a lever or dog mounted on one of said jaws and slidably engaging said guide or track for holding said jaws open during the movement of said sheet gripper away from said sheet gage, said gripper being provided with means for operating said dog or lever to open said jaws adjacent the end of the grippers movement toward said sheet gage.
29. In a sheet feeding machine, a sheet crimping instrumentality, a sheet gage distant therefrom, a sheet gripper i'or moving a sheet across said sheet crimping instrumentality tosaid gage and means operated by the movement of said sheet grippers for moving said sheet crimping instrumentality into and out of operating position with respect to the sheet which is being gaged.
