a citizen of the island of Porto Rico, and.
vided with feed mechanism for forcing the tobacco successively into compartments which are mounted upon an intermittently rotating carrier, means being provided whereby the tobacco is forced from the receptacles of the carrier into a chamber forming part of a reciprocating plunger, means also being providedwhereby the plunger, with the tobacco therein, may be forced against a wrapper and into a wrapper-folding channel, whereby the wrapper is folded upon the exterior of the chamber plunger. Further movement of the chamber plunger causes the tobacco and wrapper to be forced into one of a series of chambers which are mounted upon endless bands` the chamber plunger being thelrwithdrawn in such a manner that the tobacco, with the inclosiug wrapper, is retained in said chamber. lVrapper folding mechanism is provided for further folding the wrapper around the tobacco; also for crimping certain folded portions of the wrapper and forcing the tobacco back from the edge toward the interior of the package, thereby serving to hold the wrapper flaps in place; and for forcing the wrapped tobacco out of said chamber.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1v Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a View 4similar to Fig. 3 showing a different position of the chamber plunger; Fig. 9 is a transverse section on the line IX-IX of Fig. 2; Fig. 10 is a detail sectional view on the line X-X of Fig. 5; Fig. 11 is a detail view showing the means for the final crimping of thewrapper.
Referring to the drawings in detail, to the frame 1 of the machine is secured a shaft 2, upon which pulleys 3 and 4 are journaled. Forming part of pulley 4 is a gear wheel 5 in mesh with a larger gear wheel 6 which is secured to a shaft 7. Secured to shaft 7 is a beveled gear wheel 8 in mesh with a beveled gear wheel 9 secured to a shaft 10. Secured to the shaft 10 is a disk provided with a convex peripheral surface 11 ext-ending through seven-eighths of the periphery, and gear teeth 12 extending through one-eighth of the periphery and forming a mutilated gear. The convex peripheral surface 11, during seven-eighths of the revolution of the disk, travels against one of 'four concave surfaces 13 formed on a disk 14, and during one-eighth of a revolution of the first-named disk, the gear teeth 12 engage gear teeth 15 'formed on the disk 14. Disk 14 is secured to the lower end of a vertical shaft 16, upon the upper end of which is secured a circular plate 17 which rests upon a circular table 18. The circular plate 17 is provided at four equidistant points with rectangular-shaped openings 19. The circular plate 17 is provided with upward compartment-forming extensions 2() which have the same shape as the rectangular openings 19.
By means of the first-named disk coperatiug with the disk 14, an intermittent rotary movement is imparted to the circular plate 17 in a manner that will be readily understood. During the intermittent movement of the circular plate 17, the rectangular openings 19 and the upward extensions 20 are successively moved to positions of rest beneath an overhanging frame 21. .lournaled in the 'frame 21 is a shaft 22. to one end of which is secured a beveled gear wheel 23 in mesh with a beveled gear wheel 24 which is secured to a shaft 25, which eX- t-ends downward and is provided at its lower end with a beveled gear wheel 26 in mesh with a beveled gear wheel 27 secured to the driving shaft 7. Secured to shaft 22 is a wheel 28 provided with a convex peripheral surface 29 extending through half of its circumference, land gear teeth .30. extending surface 31 formed in a wheel 32, and the gear teeth 30 of the wheel 28 mesh with vgear teeth 33 formed on the wheel 32.
Wheel 32 is secured to a shaft 34, to which is secured a gear wheel 35 in mesh with a gear wheel 36 secured to a shaft 37. Secured to one end of the shaft 37 is a gear wheel 38 which is in mesh with one of a series of inter-meshing small gear wheels 39, which are secured to shafts 40, to each of which shafts is secured a roller 41. Mounted on the over-hanging frame 21 and above the rollers 41 is' a hopper 42, in which vthe comminuted tobacco is placed. This tobacco is made' up of numerous small particles having a length ranging from oneeighth to oneehalf inch. Journaled in the hopper 42 are two shafts or rollers 43, each of which is provided with a series of radial arms 44. To one end of each shaft 43 is secured a chain wheel 45 over which rides a chain 46, riding over a chain wheel 47 which is secured to one of the shafts 40, which are adapted to cause rotation of the shafts 43' with the 'radial arms 44 inthe direction indicated by the arrows in Fig. 7. the arms 44 during rotation of the shafts 43 causes the tobacco to be forced down through openings 48 formed in the bottom y of the hopper, and as the pairs o'f rollers 41 beneath the openings 48 are rotated, the tobacco that is passing through the openings 48 passes between the rollers of each pair and is forced downward between the said rollers and the particles varying in length fall into the upward extensions 20 of the rectangular openings 19 of the circular plate 17 to rest upon the table 18.
Secured to shaft 22 is a wheel 49 having a convexI peripheral surface 50 extending through three-quarters of its circumference, and gear teeth 51 extending through one quarter of the circumference. The convex surface 50 rides in one of two concave surfaces'52 which are placed diametrically opposite each other on a wheel 53. The gear teeth 51 of wheel 49 mesh with gear teeth 54 which are formed on the wheel 53 through such portions of the circumference as are not occupied by the concave surfaces 52. Forming part of wheel 53 is a chain wheel 55 over which rides a chain 56, riding over a chain wheel 57 which is secured to one of a series of shafts 58. Forming part of each shaft 58 is a two-edged knife 59. Secured to each shaft 58 is a gear wheel 60 which gear wheels are inter-meshing with each other.
Shaft 22 is continuously rotated, and during the rotationl thereof wheel 28, acting on wheel 32, causes one complete rotation of wheel 32 during half a revolution of the Action of .wheel 28, and during the other half of the revolution o'f wheel 28 the wheel 32 remains stationary. During the revolution of the wheel 32 the rollers 41 are rotated, thereby Fig. 5 itwill be seen that wheel 32 is being rotated, and therefore the tobacco will be fed downward from the hopper. At this time,vas shown in Fig. 7, the convex surface 5 0 of wheel 49 is in engagement with the concave surface 452 of the wheel 53, thereby causing the seriesv of inter-meshing gear wheels 60 and knives 59 to remain stationf ary. When the gear teeth 30 of-wheel 28 are moved out of engagement with the teeth 33 of wheel 32, and the rollers 41 are caused to remain stationary, the teeth 51vof wheel 49 will be moved into engagement with the teeth 54 of wheel 53, thereby causing a half revolution of the knives 59. During thishalf revolution of the knives 59, the cutting edges of two pairs of the knives are moved into engagement with any particles of the tobacco that may be .projecting below the pairsvof rollers at the time the rollers stop moving, so that the knives, by cutting off the projecting particles of the tobacco, will provide for makinguniform the quantity of tobacco that will be forced into the upward .extensions 20of the rectangular openings 19. The several mechanisms operated by shaft 22 serve to produce the chargeforming material.
As the circular plate 17, with the tobacco in the upward extensions 20 of the rectangularV openings 19 and resting on the table 18, is intermittently rotated, one of said rectangular openings is moved to a position diametrically opposite that which it occupied when beneath the overhanging frame 2l and the hopper 42. When this rectangular opening is in this position, it is directly over a correspondingly shaped opening 61 formed in the table 18, and a similarly shaped opening 62 formed in a rectangular shaped channel l63, and also above a similarly shaped opening 64 formed in a rectangular hollow form or plunger 65 and constituting a charge-carrier. ,Within the hollow plunger 65 is a` plunger 66 normally located back of the opening `64 formed in the hollow plunger 65. The forward end of the hollow plunger 65 is closed bymeans of two doors 67 which are hinged at 68 to one end of the rectangular shaped channel 63. By means of springs 69, the doors 67 are normally held against the forward 'end of the hollow plunger 65. When the upward extensions 20 are moved to the position last referred to, a plunger 70 occupies a position above the upper end of said extension 20. Secured to plunger 70 is a rod 71 forming part of an arm 72 which is secured toavertical rod 73 hav'- ing a vertically reciprocating movement in a guide 74. The lower endof rod 73 is connected by a link 75 to the free end of a lever 76 which is pivoted at 77 to a stationary part of the machine. Journaled on the arm 76 is a roller 78 which travels in a groove formed .in a cam 79 secured to the driving shaft. The cam 79 is so shaped that downward movement is vimparted to plunger 7 0,'thereby forcing the tobacco from extension 20 down through the openings 61, 62 and 64 into the hollow plunger 65 and between the forward end of plunger 66 and thedoors 67, which close the forward end of the hollow plunger 65, as shown in Fig. 3. Secured to the under-Side of hollow plunger 65 is an arm 80 forming part of a slide 81 adapted for reciprocating movement on a bar 82. Slide 81 is connected by arod 83 with a slide 84 adapted to move in guides 85. The under-side of slide 84 is provided with a rack 86 which is in mesh with a gear wheel 87 secured to a shaft 88. Secured to shaft 88 is a pinion 89 in mesh with a gear segment 90 which is pivoted to a stationary part of the machine. Projecting from the segment is a pin 91 which engages a. slot in the end of a lever 92 which is pivot-ed at 93 to a stationary part of the machine. Connected to a pin 94 on arm 93 is a bar 95 having a slotted end 96 which rides on a shaft 97. Journaled on bar 95 is a roller 98 which engages a cam groove 99 formed in a wheel 100, which is secured to shaft 97. Secured to shaft 97 is a beveled gear wheel 101 in mesh with a beveled gear wheel 102, which is secured to the driving shaft 7. Secured to plunger 66 is an arm 103 forming part of a slide 104 adapted for reciprocating movement on the bar 82. The slide 104 is connected by a rod 105 to a slide 106 which is free to move in guides 107. The under-side of slide 106 is provided with a rack 108 which is in mesh with a gear wheel 109 secured to a shaft 110. Secured to shaft 110 is a pinion 111 in mesh with a gear segment 112 which is pivoted to a stationary part of the machine. Gear segment 112 is provided with a pin 113 which engagesthe slotted end of a lever 114 which is pivoted at 115. Connected to a. pin 116 on lever 114 is a bar 117 provided with a slotted end 118 which rides on the shaft 97. Journaled on the bar 117 is a roller 119 which travels in a cam groove 120 formed in a wheel 121 secured to the shaft 97.
perating mechanisms for slides 84' and 106 are substantially similar, excepting as to the form of the cam grooves of wheels 100 and 121 which control the timing of operations. V-Shaft 97 is constantly driven from shaft 7, thus rotating wheels 100 and 121. the grooves of which cause rollers 98 and 119 to reciprocate arms 93 and 117 at thew proper times. As shown in Fig. 2, movement of' arm 117 oscillates lever 114. thereby moving segment 112 the operation of which is effective on wheel 109 and racli 108 through pinion 111 and shaft 110. The substantially similar actions between cam wheel 100 and wheel 87 and rack 86 produce an approximately similar operation. The movement of slide 84 controls the movements of the hollow plunger or form 65, while the movement of slide 106 controls the movements of plunger 66.
Referring to Fig. 3, the hollow plunger 65 and plunger 66 move forward, carrying the tobacco contained in the hollow plunger 65, causing the doors 67 to open and permit the forward end of the hollow plunger to move against a wrapper 122 which is placed in a chute 123 to rest on a support 124. The wrapper is supplied by means of feed rollers 125 from a roll of paper 126. Mechanism is provided for cutting off a proper length of wrapper from thel roll of paper, but as such mechanism forms no part of this V invention, it is not shown on the drawings.
As forward movement of the plungers continues, the forward end of the hollow plunger (which acts at this time as a form) extending partially across the wrapper 122 causes the wrapper to be forced against an upper plate 127 and a lower plate 128, thereby causing the wrapper to be folded upon the upper and lower sides of the hollow plunger. As forward movement of the plunger continues, inwardly projecting side folders 129 cause side flaps of the wrapper to be folded against the two sides of the hollow plunger, and two upwardly projecting folders 130 cause lower side flaps of the wrapper to be folded up against the side of the hollow plunger, and downwardly projecting folders 131 cause upper side flaps of thel wrapper to be folded down against the side of the hollow plunger. At t-he end of forward movement of the hollow plunger, the wrapper thus folded upon the hollow plunger, and the forward end of the hollow plunger (forming substantially an embryo package) enter one of a series of open-ended receptacles 132. At the end of forward movement of the plunger' 66, the tobacco that is in the hollow plunger is forced by the plunger- 66 forward into the space contained in said receptacle 132, thereby pressing the tobacco against the wrapper at the forward end of the hollow plunger against a stationary wall'133 (closing one end of the receptacle at this time), at which time the hollow plunger occupies the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4. As will be seen. thef arrangement is such that the wrapper and the charge, while traveling in unison to position within a receptacle are practicallyy out of contact. such portion of the charge as -may contact with the wrapper at the open end of the form being immaterial tol apply any pressure on the wrapper, both form and plunger traveling in unison. Hence, the fact that the form is carrying both wrapper or container and the charge into packaging position, with the open end of the form closed only by the wrapper material, is not damaging in effect. By physically separating the charge and wrapper during this advance movement of the receptacle, no strains are placed on the wrapper. And as the discharging action takes place within the receptacle where the walls of the latter form the external support for the wrapper, the pressures which may be exerted in positioning the charge are ineffective to damage the wrapper.
The receptacles are placed at regular distances apart and secured to two endless bands 134 bymeans of screws 135. Each receptacle is provided with a tooth 136 adapted for engagement with recesses 137 formed in the periphery of a pulley 138 secured to a shaft 139, and a pulley 140 secured to a shaft 141. Secured to shaft 141 is a wheel 142, which, at four equidistant points on its circumference, is provided with concave surfaces 143 and gear teeth 144. Secured to the driving shaft 7 is a wheel provided with a convex surface 145 extending through seven-eighths of its circumference, and gear teeth 146 extending through one-eighth of the circumference. It will be readily understood that this mechanism will cause an intermittent movement of the pul leys 138 and 140, and bands 134 carrying the series of receptacles 132.
Each receptacle is provided with V-shaped grooves 147 which are adapted during the upper run to engage and be supported by correspondingly shaped tracks 148. Referring to Fig. 8, the upper side of the receptacle 132 is provided with guides 149 1n which a rod 150 is free to move.4 The rod 150 is provided with a pin 151 which 1s engaged by a spring 152 causing movement of the rod to the position shown in the drawing. Rod 151 is provided with a pin 153 which is engaged by one end of a bell-crank lever 154 which is pivoted at 155 to a part of the receptacle. Bell-crank 154 is provided with a in 156 which engages one end of a lever 157) is connected at 159 to a slide 160, which 1s free to move in vertical guides ,161.
As shown in Fig` 8, the hollow plunger is moving back from the receptacle while the plunger 66 still remains stationary. This is caused by the dierence in the shape of cam groove 99, which causes .the movement of the hollow plunger, and cam groove 120. which causes movement of plunger 66. Nh-en the hollow plunger' is moved clear of the receptacle, the plunger 66 will be moved back also, the packed tobacco then remainwhich is pivoted at 158 and ing within the wrapper, with portions of the wrapper overhanging the tobacco contained in the receptacle.
Located opposite the end of rod 150 of the receptacle receiving the charge, is an arm 162 which is secured to a rod 163, which is adapted to slide in guides 164. Upon one end of rod 163 is secured a downwardly projecting arm 165 which is connected by a link 166 to the upper end of a lever 167, which is pivoted at 168. To the lower end of lever 167 is journaled a roller 169 which travels in a groove formed in a cam wheel 17 O. The groove in cam wheel 17 O is shaped to cause movement of the arm 162 against rod 150, thereby causing movement of the levers described, with consequent downward movement of the slide 160, thereby causing an upper overhanging flap of the wrapper to be folded down against the tobacco that has been packed within the wrapper contained in the receptacle. To one side of the wrapper projecting beyond the packed tobacco is a folderl 171 attached to a slide 172 having reciprocating movement in guides 173. Slide 172 is connected by a link 174 to one end of a bell-crank lever 175 which is pivoted at 176. The other end of bellcrank lever 175 engages a pin 177 forming part of a reciprocating slide 178. Slide 178 is connected by a link 179 to the upper end of a lever 180 which is pivoted at 181. To the lower end of lever' 180 is journaled a roller 182 which travels in a groove formed in a cam wheel 183. By means of cam wheel 183 the folder 171 is actuated, causing one of the rear end side flaps of the wrapper to be folded against the'packed tobacco. One of the intermittent movements of the series of receptacles will then occur. causing the other reary end side flap to be forced against a folder 184, thereby causing said flap to be folded against the packed tobacco. Further movement of the said receptacle will then cause the lower end flap to 'be forced against a folder 185, whereby the said flap will be folded up against the packed tobacco.
Secured to the shaft 97 is a cam wheel 186 having a groove which engages a roller 187-formed on a slide which is adapted to move in guides 188 and. provided with a. slot 189 which rides on the shaft 97. One end of said slide is provided with an upward extension 190 which has its upper end connected by a link 191 to one end of a lever 192, which is pivoted at 193. The other end of the lever 192 is connected by a link 194 to a slide 195 which is adapted for reciprocating movement in guides 196. Attached to slide 195 is a cross bar 197 having a plunger 198 secured to one end, and a plunger 199 secured to the other end. Action of the cam 186 causes movement of the plungers 198 and 199, the plunger 198 at 'wrapper folding channel and the forward end of said hollow plunger; and means for actuating said plungers, whereby they together with said comminuted articles are moved forward as a unit through said wrapper folding channel, thereby causing said wrapper to be folded upon the exterior of said hollow plunger and the contained comminuted articles; a stationary wall; and means for imparting further forward movement to said inner plunger, whereby said comminuted articles and` inclosing wrapper are pressed against said stationary wall; said plunger actuating means then causing said hollow plunger to be moved back from within said wrapper while said inner plunger remains stationary, and then causing said inner pllinger to be moved back away from said articles and wrapper; wrapper folding devices and means for actuating them, vwhereby certain overhanging rear flaps are folded against said compressed articles.
6. A packaging machine, comprising a supporting table; an intermittently rotating plate on said table and having a series of compartments open at their u per and lower ends; means whereby comminuted articles can be placed in said compartments; said supporting table having an opening adapted to register with the lower open end of one of said compartments of said plate;'a hollow reciprocating plunger and a reciprocating plunger therein, said hollow plunger having an opening adapted to register with said opening of said table; means whereby said comminuted articles can be forced from the compartments in register with said openings of said table and hollow plunger, into said hollow plunger and in advance of said inner plunger; a wrapper folding channel; supports for a wrapper between said wrapper folding channel and the forward end of said hollow plunger; and means for actuating said plungers, whereby -they together with said comminuted articles are moved forward through said wrapper folding channel, thereby causing said wrapper to be folded upon the exterior of said hollow plunger and the contained comminuted articles; a stationary wall; and means for imparting A further forward movement to said inner plunger, whereby said comminuted articles and inclosing wrapper are pressed against said stationary wall; said plunger actuating means then causing said hollow plunger to be moved back from within said wrapper while said inner plunger remains stationary,
and then causing said inner plunger to be moved back away from said articles and wrapper.
7. In packaging machines adapted to packagel comminuted materiahf' containerforming instrumentalities positioned in the path of travel ofan advancing charge, a charge-receiving station in advance of said instrumentalities, a charge-carrier `positionable within said station, and means for locat'ing a charge in the carrier at said station in advance of container-forming operation, said means including an element having open-ended charge-receiving pockets and movable to position a pocket over said station, a charge-admitting station in advance of said 'charge-receiving station for admitting a charge to apocket, whereby said element movements will transfer a positioned charge to position in vertical alinement with the charge-receiving station, means temporarily closing the lower end of the pocket carrying the admitted charge to maintain the latter within the-pocket during travel to such position of alinement, said closing means being inactive within the alining position, and means operative on the alined charge for shifting the latter from the pocket to the charge-receiving station.
8. In packaging machines, containerforming instrumentalities including a hollow carrier having an open top and adapted to provide a form during container for'mation by travel within the instrumentalities, said form being adapted to carry the charge to be packaged during said container-formation travel, a charge-receiving station with- .in which said form is positionable in advance of the container production with the open top exposed therein, and means for loeating a charge in said form while wlthin the station, said means including an element having open-ended charge-receiving pockets and movable to position a pocket over said y station in -alinement with the opening of the form, a charge-admitting station inadv'ance of said charge-receiving station for admitting a charge to a pocket, whereby said element movement willtransfer a positioned charge to position in vertical alinement with such form open top, means temporamly closing the lower end of the pocket carrying the admitted charge to maintain the latter within the pocket during travel to such position of alinement, said closing means being inactive with the' charge in such alining position, and means operative on the alined charge for shifting the latter from the pocket into the positioned form.
9. A packaging machine, comprising a supporting table, an intermittently rotating' plate on said table and having a series of compartments open at their upper and lower ends, charge-forming mechanism operative with said compartments successively, and adapted to feed a regulated amount of comminuted articles thereto, said supporting table having an opening adapted to register with the lower open end of one of said compartments; a hollow reciprocating plunger and a reciprocating plunger therein, said neaaoae the end of its movement serving to force the folded rear end flap 200 into the package (wall 133 closing the receptacle), and the plunger 199 forces the completed package from the receptacle previously acted'on by plunger 198, out and into a receiving channel Q01.
As will be seen, the hollow form receives its charge at one eXtreme of its reciprocating movement, the position of the form at such time placing its charge-receiving opening in vertical alinement with the table opening. At the same time, one of the charge Containing compartments of member 17 is also in vertical alinement with the table opening and in position te permit plunger 70 to become active to carry the charge into the form. Owing to the fact that member 17 carries a. plurality of compartments so positioned relative to each other that one compartment is located to receive the charge from the source of niaterial supply while another compartment is in position to deliver the charge to the form, concurrent action of the supply means and plunger 70 is made possible thereby increasing capacity through the fact that the hollow form'is not unduly delayed in chargereceiving position.
The particular arrangementshown in Fig, 7 for preparing the charge, is not specifically claimed herein, the subject-matter of the charge-preparing structure forming the subject-matter of my divisional application filed Sept. 13, 1917, Ser, No. 191,258.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A packaging machine comprising a hollow longitudinally reciprocating plunger and a reciprocating plunger therein; means whereby comminuted articles can be forced into said hollow plunger in advance of the inner plunger and in advance of plunger movement; wrapper holding means; means for actuating said plungers, whereby forward movement thereof successively causes a wrapper to be folded upon the exterior of said plungers and said contained articles to be compressed; and whereby said hollow plunger can be moved back away from said articles and inclosing wrapper previous to the time said inner plunger is moved back; and wrapper folding devices and means for actuating them, whereby certain overhanging rear flaps are folded against said compressed articles. y l
2. A packaging machine, comprising a hollow longitudinally reciprocating plunger and a reciprocating plunger therein with both plungers movable in horizontal planes; means whereby connninuted articles can be fprced into said hollow plunger in advance of plunger movement; wrapper folding means; and means for actuating said plungers, whereby forward movement thereof successively causes a wrapper to be folded upon the exterior of said plungers and said contained articles to be compressed; and whereby said hollow plunger can be moved back away from said articles and inclosing wrapper previous to the time said inner plunger is moved back.
3. A packaging machine, comprising a supporting table; an intermittently rotating plate on said table and having a series of compartments open at their upper and lower ends; means whereby comminuted articles can be placed in said compartments; said supporting table having an opening adapted to register with the lower open end of one of said compartments; a hollow reciprocating plunger and a reciprocating plunger therein, said hollow plunger having an opening adapted to register with said opening of said table; means whereby said comminuted articles can be forced from the compartment in register with said openings of said table. and hollow plunger, into -said hollow plunger and in advance of said inner plunger; wra per folding devices; and means for actuating said plunger, whereby forward movement thereof causes a wrapper to be folded upon the exterior of said plungers and causes said contained articles to be compressed; and whereby said hollow plunger can be moved back away from said articles and inclosing wrapper previous to the time said inner plunger is moved back.
4. A packaging machine, comprising a hollow longitudinally reciprocating plunger and a reciprocating plunger therein; means whereby comminuted articles can be forced into said hollow plunger and in advance of the inner plunger; a wrapper folding channel; supports for a wrapper between said wrapper folding channel and the forward end of said hollow' plunger; and means for actuating said plungers, whereby they together with said comminuted articles are moved forward as a unit through said wrapper folding channel, thereby causing said wrapper to be folded upon the exterior of said hollow plunger and the contained comminuted articles; a stationary wall; and means for imparting further forward movement to said inner plunger, whereby said comminuted articles and inclosing wrapper are' pressed against said stationary wall; said plunger actuating means then causing said hollow plunger to be moved back from within said wrapper while said inner plunger remains stationary, and then causing said inner plunger to be moved back away from said articles and wrapper.
5. A packaging machine, comprising a hollow longitudinally reciprocating plunger and a reciprocating plunger therein; means whereby comminuted articles can be forced into said hollow plunger and in advance of hollow plunger having an opening adapted to register with said opening of said table; means whereby said comminuted articles can be forced from the compartment in register with said opening of said table and of said hollow plunger, into said hollow plunger and in advance of said inner plun er; wrapper folding devices; and means or actuating said plungers, whereby forward movement thereof causes a wrapper to be folded upon the exterior of said plungers and causes said contained articles to be compressed; and whereby said hollow plunger can be moved back away from said articles and inclosing wrapper previous to the time said inner plunger is moved back.
10. A packaging machine, comprising a supporting table, an intermittently rotating plate on said vtable and having a series of' compartments, open at their upper and lower ends, chargefforniing mechanism operative with said compartments successively, and adapted to feed a regulated amount of comminuted articles thereto, said supporting table having an opening adapted to register with the lower open end of one of said compartments of said plate; a hollow reciprocating plunger and a reciprocating plunger therein and coperative therewith, said hollow plunger having an opening adapted to register with said opening of said table; a vertically reciprocating plunger in range with said compartment in register with said opening of said table and of said hollow plunger; means for actuating said verticallyA reciprocating plunger whereby downward movement thereof causes said articles in said compartment to be forced down through. said openings, into said hollow plunger and in advance of said inner plunger; wrapperf' folding devices; and means for actuating the hollow and inner plungers, whereby forward movement thereof causes a wrapper to be folded upon the exterior of hollow and inner plungers and causes said contained articles to be compressed; and whereby said hollow plunger can be moved back away from said articles and inclosing wrapper previous to the time said inner plunger is Y moved back.
11. A packagingmachine, comprising a hollow reciprocating plunger and a reciprocating plunger therein. means whereby comminuted articles can be forced into said hollow plunger and in'advance l'of the inner plunger; a'lfwrapper folding channel; supports for a wrapper between said wrapper folding channel and the forward end of said hollow plunger;'and means for actuating aid plungers` whereby they together with said comminuted articles are moved forward through said wrapper folding channel. thereby causing said wrapper to be folded upon the exterior of said hollow plunger and the contained articles; a stationary wall; a series of receptacles mounted on intermittently moving endless bands adapted to cause one of said receptacles to ing wrapper into said receptacle; and means for imparting further Aforward movement to said inner plunger, whereby said com- 'minuted articles and inclosing wrapper are pressed against said stationary wall; said plunger actuating means then causing said lhollow plunger to be moved back from within said wrapper while said inner plunger remains stationary, and then causing said inner plunger to be moved back away from said articles and wrapper; each .of said receptacles being provided with a wrapper folding mechanism whereby the upper overhanging rear flap is folded against said compressed articles.
12. A packaging machine,y comprising a hollow reciprocating plunger and a reciprocating plunger therein; means whereby comminuted articles can be forced into said hollow plunger and in advance of thev inner plunger; wrapper folding means; means for actuating said plungers, whereby forward movement ythereof causes a wrapper to be folded upon the exterior of said plungers and causes said contained articles to be `compressed; a series of receptacles mounted on intermittently' moving endless bands, adapted to cause one of said receptacles to come tQ rest in advance of said wrapper folding means; said hollow plunger at the end of its forward movement forcing said articles and inclosingwrapper into said receptacle; `said plunger actuating means then causing said hollow plunger to be moved back from within said wrapper while said inner plunger remains stationary, and then causing said inner plunger to be moved back awayy from said articles and wrapper;
each of said receptacles being provided with a wrapper folding mechanism whereby the upper overhanging rear flap is folded against said compressed articles,l
13. A packaging machine, comprising a hollow reciprocating plunger and a reciprocating plunger therein; means whereby comminuted articles can be forced into said hollow plunger and in advance of the inner plunger; wrapper folding means; means for actuating'lsaid pdlungers, whereby forward movement thereof causes a wrapper to be folded upon the exterior of said plungers and @causes saidA contained articles to be compressed; a series of receptacles mounted oi 'intermittently moving endless bands adapted to cause one of said receptacles to come to rest in advance of said wrapper folding means; said hollow plunger at the end of its forward movement forcing said articles and inclosing wrapper into said reupper overhanging rear flap is folded' against said compressed articles, together with stationary folders cooperating with said intermittently moving receptacles, whereby certain overhanging rear flaps are folded.
14. A packaging machine, comprising a series of receptacles mounted on intermittently moving endless bands; a reciprocating slide carrying two plungers, in range with two corresponding receptacles; wrapper folding means in range with another one of said receptacles; a hollow reciprocating plunger in range with said wrapper folding means, and having an inner reciprocating plunger;` means whereby comminuted articles can be forced into said hollow plunger and in advance of the inner plunger; means for actuating the last named plungers, whereby forward movement thereof causes a wrapper t0 be folded upon the exterior of said plungers and causes said articles and inclosing wrapper to be moved into the receptable in range therewith; said plunger actuating means then causing said hollow plunger to be moved back from within said wrapper while said inner plungery remains stationary, and -then causing said inner plunger to be moved back .away from said articles and wrapper; wrapper folding devices and means for actuating them, whereby overhanging rear flaps are folded against said articles; and means for actuating said slide, whereby one of said plungers thereof forces said folded rear flaps of a previously folded wrapper farther into the receptacle in range therewith, and whereby the other plunger forces a previously completed package out of the receptacle in range therewith.
15. In packaging machines and in combination, a hollow form having closed side walls and movable longitudinally in a substantially horizontal plane, said form being adapted to contact with and support both a charge and its container to travel in unison, means for moving said form with its charge and container to discharging position and for producing an open mouth container formation on the form durin travel to such position, and means operative in such position for providing relative movement between the -form and the container and charge 4to position the charge in the container.

In packaging machines, a 'hollow form -having a charge-receiving opening at its top and constituting a charge-carrier and weones having a charge-receiving opening at its top I and constituting a charge-carrier and movable longitudinally in a substantially horizontal plane between receiving and delivery positions, mechanism for placing a wrapper in container formation about said carrier after the charge has been received and during carrier movements, and means operative in the carrier delivery position for withdrawing the container and the charge from the carrier with the charge positioned within the container.
18. In packaging machines, a hollow form having a charge-receiving opening at its top and constituting a chcrge-carrier and movable longitudinally in a substantially horizontal plane between receiving and delivery positions, mechanism for placing a wrapper in container formation about said carrier after the charge has been received and during travel of the carrier to its delivery position, said container having an open mouth, and means operative in such position for withdrawing the container and the charge from the carrier with the charge positioned within the container. 4
19. In packaging machines, a hollow form having a charge-receiving opening at its top and constituting a charge-carrier and movable longitudinally in a substantially horizontal plane between receiving and delivery positions, mechanism for placing a wrapper in container formation about said carrier with itscontained charge during carrier movements, and means for withdrawing the container and the charge from the carrier with the charge positioned within the container, said means including a plunger with- -in the carrier and operative to retain the and plunger being relatively movable during the withdrawal operation.
21. In packaging machines, a hollow form having a charge-receiving opening and constituting a charge-carrier and movable longitudinally in a substantially horizontalplane between receiving and delivery positions, mechanism for placing a wrapper in container formation about said carrier with its contained charge during travel of the carrier to its delivery position, said contalner having an open mouth, mechanism for withdrawing' the carrier from suchdelivery position, and means for retaining the con` tainer and charge against movementduring carrier withdrawal movements, whereby the charge will be positioned within the container and the latter removed from the carrier.
22. In packaging machines, a hollow form having'a charge-receiving opening at its top and constituting a charge-carrier and movable longitudinally in a substantially horizontal plane between receiving an'd delivery positions, mechanism for placing a wrapper in container formation about said carrier with its contained charge durlng travel of the carrier to its delivery position, said container having an open mouth mechanism for withdrawing the carrier from such delivery position, and means for producing relative movement between the carrier and the container and charge during carrier withdrawal movement.
23. In packaging machines, a hollow form having a charge-receiving opening at its top and constituting a charge-carrier and movable between receiving and delivery posi-V tions, mechanism for placing a wrapper in container formation about said carrier with its contained charge during travel of the carrierto its delivery position, mechanism for withdrawing the carrier from such delivery position,l said container having an open mouth, and a plunger within the carrier positionable to produce relative movements of carrier and charge during carrier withdrawal movements, said plunger being active in such movements while the container is in overlying relation to the carrier.
24. In packaging machines for comminuted articles, a hollow form at its top' having a charge-receiving opening and constituting a charge-carrier and movable longitudinally in a substantially horizontal plane between receiving and delivery positions, a wrapper within the path of travel of the carrier, mechanism for folding the wrapper into 'fcontainer form about said carrier after the 'charge has been received and during carrier movements, and means for withdrawing the wrapper and the charge from the carrier.
25. In packaging machines and in combination, a hollow form adapted to support a charge and its container, a plunger within vance the plunger to compress the charge,
and then successively withdraw the form 'and the plunger, the plunger withdrawal movement taking place after the form has left the receptacle.
26. In packaging machines and in combination, a. hollow form having closed side walls and movable longitudinally in a substantially horizontal plane, said form being adapted to contact with and support both a charge and its container to travel in unison, al receptacle in such travel path and adapted to receive the form and its charge and container, and means for removing the form from its supporting relation and to position the charge within the `container when the container and its charge are within the receptacle, whereby the receptacle will act to support the container during the chargepositioning operation.
27. In packaging machines and in combination, an open-ended hollow form having closed side walls and movable longitudinally in a substantially horizontal plane, said form being adapted to support a charge and its wrapper and movable between receiving and discharging positions, means operative to close the openend of said form when in charge-receiving' position, said means being independent of the wrapper and movable prior to wrapper-positioning on the form. to permit advance of the forni with its end open, whereby the charge and wrapper are free to contact at the advance end of the charge, means for folding the wrapper into container formation during travel of the form, and means operative in the form-discharging position for withdrawing the formed wrapper and its charge from the form.
28. In packaging machines and in combination, a hollow form having closed side walls and movable longitudinally in a substantially horizontal plane, said form being adapted to contact with and support both a charge and its container to travel in unison, means for moving said form with its charge and container to discharging position, means operative in such position for providing relative movement between theform and the container and charge to position the charge in the container, and means operative on the container for complet-ing the package after the charge has been positioned.
29. In packaging machines, a charge-carrier having closed side walls and movable longitudinally in a substantially horizontal plane between receiving and delivery posi-v tions, means for folding a Wrapper into container form about said carrier after the charge has been received and during movements of the carrier to delivery position, means for Withdravvingthe wrapper and the charge from said carrier, and means for closing the package after such Withdrawal.
30. In packaging machines and in combination, a traveling receptacle movable intermittently to successive stations, mechanism operative at one of said stations for producing al charge and its container and for completing and introdu-cing the charge and its container` Within the receptacle With the charge compressed and the container open at one end, and mechanism -for completing the package by closing the liaps at the container open end, said latter mechanism including independent means for folding tivo adjacent side flaps, said means being operated successively, and means located in the path of travel of the receptacle to fold the remaining flaps.
31. In packaging machines and in combination, a traveling receptacle movable intermittently to successive stations, mechanism operative at one of saidstations producinoy a charge and its container and for completing and introducing vthe charge and its container within the receptacle with the charge compressed and the container open at one end, and mechanism for completing the package by closing the flaps at the container open end, said latter mechanism including independent means for folding two adjacent side iiaps, said means being operated successively while the receptacle is in receiving position, and means located in the path of travel of the receptacle to fold the remaining flaps.
32. In packaging machines and in combination, a traveling receptacle movable intermittently to successive stations, mechanism operative at one of said stations for producing a charge and its container and for completing and introducing the charge and its container `Within the receptacle with the charge compressed and the container open at one end, and mechanism for completing the package by closing the flaps at the container open end, said latter mechanism including independent means for folding two adjacent side aps, said means being operated successively, means located in the path of travel of the receptacle to fold the remaining flaps, and means operative at the succeeding station to tuck-in the folded fla ps. l
V33 In packagingemachines and in combination, an intermittently-movable traveling lmember carrying a plurality of receptacles relatively positioned to successively rest at receiving, tucking-in and discharging stations, mechanism operative at one of 65 ,said stations for introducing a charge and its container into each receptacle and for compressing the charge When in position at the receiving station, means for folding the several container flaps in advance of reaching the tucking-in station, and tucking-in means and discharging means operative on the receptacles located respectively at the tucking-in and discharging stations.
34. In packaging machines and in combination, a hollow form adapted to contact with and support both a charge and its container to travel in unison, an open-ended -receptacle adapted to receive the form and its charge and container, a stationary device adapted to close one end of the receptacle during the receiving operation, means for removing the form from its supporting relation and positioning the charge Within the container when the container and its charge are Within the receptacle, means for closing the package While said receptacle end is closed, and means for shifting the receptacle to open the receptacle end, Whereby the completed package may be moved endwise to remove it from the receptacle.
35. In packaging machines wherein a foldable Wrapping element is doubled and folded relatively to the package contents during advancing movements of the contents ,and element to produce an embryo package, a shiftable mold structure located 1n the. path of advancing travel of and for receiving the package contents and Wrapping element -in the embryo form of the package, means for compressing the package contents While the embryo package is Within the mold structure, and means for subsequently completing the package by completing the folding of the Wrapping element. f
36. In packaging machines wherein a foldable Wrapping element is doubled and folded relatively to the packagel contents during advancing movements of the contents and element to produce an embryo 110 package, a shiftable mold structure located in the path of advancing travel of and for receiving the package contents and wrapping element in the embryo form of the package, means for compressing the pack- 115 age contents While the embryo package is Within the mold structure, and means for subsequently completing the package by completing the folding of the Wrapping element, said mold structure including a plurality of open-ended pockets adapted to be successively-positioned in the path of advancing embryo packages and with an open end of a pocket in alinement with the advancing embryo package,` and an element positioned opposite lthe other open end of the pocket so positioned and adapted to form a temporary end Wall for the pocket.
37. In packaging machines wherein a foldable Wrapping element is doubled and folded relatively to the package contents during advancing movements of the contents and element to produce an embryo package, a shiftable mold structure located in the path of advancing travel of and for receiving the package contents and wrapping element in the embryo form of the package, means for compressing the package contents while the embryo package is within the mold structure, and means for subsequently completing the. package by .completing the folding of the ,wrappingelement, said mold structure being movable intermittently and including a plurality of open-ended pockets adapted to travel in a direction transverse to lthe direction of travel of the advancing embryo package, said pockets being shiftable successively to a position toy locate an open-end of the pocket in the path of the Aadvancing pack-- 20 HILARIG DE ESCOBALES.
