To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. BEATTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlotte, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Dump-Body for Autotrucks, of which the followingis a specilication.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a dumping body adapted to be assembled with an automobile frame, and one object of the invention is to provide means whereby the body may be rotated horizontally and be tilted vertically, with respect to the frame.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for holding vthe body in adjusted position, against rotation in a horizontal plane with respect to the frame.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for tilting the body vertically.
Afurther object of the invention is to provide novel means for opening and closing the end gate of the body.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means for holding the body releasably against tilting movement in a vertical plane.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of-that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in thecombination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter describedand claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan of the structure shown in Fig. 1, portions of the framework of the vehicle being omitted; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on an enlarged scale, taken approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a fragmental vertical section showing the latch mechanism which prevents the vehicle body from tilting; and.

In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the frame ofl a vehicle,
including side bars 2 connected by cross bars 3 which maybe angle members. The numeral 4 marks, generally, a turntable,in cluding a lower member 5 secured to the cross bars 3. The lower member 5 of the turntable 4 is supplied in its upper surface with a ball race 6 and has seats 7 about its periphery. The turn table includes an upper member 8 having a ball race like the ball race 6 of the lower member 5. Balls 9 are interposed betweenthe members 8 and 5 of the turn table 4 and support the upper member 8 of the turn table anti-frictionally. The members 5 and 8 of the turn table 4 are connected centrally by means of a 'pivot member 10 which permits the upper member 8 to rotate in a horizontal plane with respect to the lower member 5, without, however, permitting the upper member to tilt vertically with respect to the lower member. The upper member 8 of the turn table 4 is supplied with oppositely` disposed upstanding bosses 11. The numeral 12 marks a carrier'preferably in the form of a channel or beam having its flanges upwardly extended, although the carrier may be Of any desired form. The carrier 12 is secured to the bosses 11 of the upper member 8 of the turn table 4. The carrier k12 projects forwardly beyond the upper member 8 ofthe turn table, as clearly disclosed in Fig. 1.
The numeral 14 designates a vehicle body of any desired sort, united intermediate its ends, by means of a hinge 15, with the carrier 12 adjacent to the rear endv of the carrier.
A cross beam 16 is secured to the under side of the body 14 adjacent the forward end thereof and, when the body is in a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1, the cross beam rests on the carrier 12. The forward end of the body 14 is supplied with bearings 17in which is journaled a shaft 18 extended entirely across the forward end of the body. A lever 19 is secured to the shaft 18 at one side of the carrier 12 asvshown in Figs. 1 and 2. The lever 19 carries la latch mechanism 21 adapted to coperate with a segment or keeper 22 mounted on the end of'v the body 14. Arms 23 are secured to the ends of the shaft 18 by means of set screws 24 or otherwise, the arms extending upwardly. The forward ends of connections 25 are pivoted to the upper ends of the arms 23, the connections being longitudinally adjustable, since turnbuckles 26 are interposed therein. An end gate 27 is hinged at the upper edge, as shown at 28, to the body 14, the hinge including, if desired, a pivot rod 29, shown best in Fig. 2. The rear ,ends of the connections 25 are pivoted to the end gate 27 adjacent the lower edge thereof, and, if desired, the pivotal connection between the rear ends of the members 25 and the end gate 27 may include a transverse rod 100 secured to the end gate.
A yoke 30 is disposed in front of the body 14 Aand straddles the forward end of the carrier 12, the yoke including rearwardly extended downwardly inclined fingers 31, the yoke being fulcrumed as shown at 32 on a rod extended across the carrier 12 and mounted in the side flanges of the carrier. If desired, the rod 32 may pass through a portion of a segment 35 secured to the base of the carrier 12, the segment being adapted to coperate with a latch mechanism 34 mounted on a handle 33 attached to the yoke 30, the handle and the yoke constituting a lever. Base plates 36 are secured to the cross beam 16 on the body 14, and from the base plates project. knuckles 37 in which is mounted a shaft 38, shown clearly in Fig. 3. Depending4 arms 39 are secured to the ends of the shaft 38 and are pivoted at 40 to the forward end of the fingers v31 which form a part of the lever 30-33.
A latch 41 ispivoted at 42 to one of the side anges of the carrier 12 and includes a nose 43 adapted to coperate with the shaft 18 on the forward end of the body 14 in a manner to be described hereinafter. The latch 41 may include a depending grip 44 whereby the latch may be manipulated by hand. Preferably however, the latch is operated by means of a connection or rod 46 mounted to slide in a guide 47 secured to the base of theJ carrier 12 `and terminating in a handle 48. The latch 41 is drawn forwardly to engagewith the shaft 18, by means ofV a spring 45, one end of which is attached to one of the side ianges of the carrier 12, the other end of the ,spring being attached to the latch, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
A latch rod 49 slides vertically in one of the bosses 1,1 of the upper member 8 of the turn table 4 and is adapted to coperatie with any ofthe notches or seats 7 which are formed in the edge of the other member 5 of the turn table as shown at 7 in Fig.
The upper end of the latch rod.v 4.9, is
loosely connected with a bell crank lever 50 fulcrumed on a rod 51 extended transversely of the carrier 12 and mounted in the side iianges of the carrier, the bell crank lever being prevented from shifting its position longitudinally of the rod, by means of collars 52 mounted on the rod, on each side of the bell Crank lever. The numeral 53 denotesl a connection, preferably in theforin of a rod, the rear end of the connection being` pivoted to the upstanding arm of the bell crank lever 50. The connection 53 slides longitudinally in a guide 54 mounted on the base of the carrier 12. An abutment 55 is secured to the connection 53, to the rear of the guide 54. A compression spring 56 surrounds a portion of the connection 53, one end of the spring abutting against the member 55 and the other end of the spring abutting against the guide 54. The forward end of the connection 53 is pivoted to a lever 57 fulcrumed at 58 on one of the side flanges of the carrier 12.
When the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. 1, body 14 is in a horizontal position, the cross beam 16 resting on the carrier 12. The lever 19 is swung downwardly, thereby rotating the shaft 18, and swinging the arms 23 forwardly, the connections 25 moving forwardly and holding the end gate 27 in a closed position, the latch. mechanism 21 being .engaged with the segment 22 to hold the end gate 27 closed. The spring 56 forces the connection 53 rearwardly and tilts the bell crank lever 50 on its lfulcrum 51,v thereby causing the latch rod 49 to engage in one of the seats 7 in the lower member 5 of the turn table 4, thus holding the carrier 12 and the body 14 in vertical alinement with the frame 1. The spring 45 swings the latch 41 rearwardly, the nose 43 of the latch engaging with the shaft 18, thereby to prevent the body 14 from swinging downwardly at its rear end on the hinge 15.
The connection 53 may be drawn forwardly by means of the lever 57, thereby tilting the bell crank lever 50 and elevating the latch rod 49 out of one of the seats 7 in the lower member 5 of the turn table 4. Thereupon, the upper member 8 of the turn table, the carrier 12 and the body 14 may be swung around in a horizontal plane, so that the body may discharge laterally in any desired direction, the latchrod 49 being engaged in the appropriate one of the seats 7 to hold the body 14 in any position to which it may have been rotated.
n The lever 33 is disconnected from the segment 35 and the lever is tilted, whereupon the lingers 31 of the yoke 30 which forms part of the lever will through the instrumentality of the arms 39, raise the forward end of the body 14, the body tilting on the hinges 15. The latchmechanism 21 on the lever 19Vmay be released fromthe segment 22 and the connections 25 may be operated by means of the shaft 18 and the arms 23, the shaft being rotated by the lever 19. In this way, the end gate 27 may be opened, thereby permitting a dumping of the load.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is simple in construction and includes eliicient means whereby the body 14 may be operated in the various ways necessary, in a device of the kind hereinbefore described.
Having thus described the invention` what is claimed is l. In a device of the class described, a vehicle frame; a turn table on the frame; a carrier secured to the turn table; a body pivoted to the turn table for vertical swinging movement and including an end gate; means for operating the end gate, comprising a shaft journaled on the forward end ofthe body; and a latch mounted to swing on the carrier, the latch coperating with the shaft to hold the body releasably against vertical swinging movement.

In a device of the class described, a vehicle frame; a turn table on the frame and comprising a iiXed lower member and a rotatable upper member; a channel beam secured to the upper member of the turn table and comprising upstanding Hanges, the beam projecting beyond the periphery of the turn table a distance approximating the diameter of the turn table; a body supported on and means for operating the lever from a remote point.
3. In a device of the class described, a vehicle body; a turn ta'ble comprising a lower member Xed to the body, and an upper member mounted to rotate with respect to the lower member; a latch mounted to slid vertically in the upper member, the lower member having spaced seats wherewith the latch is adapted to engage; a beam mount;` on the'upper member of the turn table and projecting therebeyond; a bell crank lever fulcrumed on the beam and connected wir, 2 the latch; means for operating the bell crack lever from a remote point; and a body supported on the beam at a point above the turn table, and a point beyond the periphery of the turn table.
