WILLIAM WISN'IEWSKI, OF FLUSI-IIN'G, NEW YORK.
RAILROAD-GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 28, 1919.
Application filed May 7, 1919. Serial No. 295,365.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WVIsNIEw- SKI, a citizen of Poland, residing at Flushing, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in railroad gates and has for its principal object to provide an automatic gate whichis lowered upon the approach of a train and raised after the passage of said train.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of an illuminating means which is automatically operated by the lowering and raising of the gate.
With these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in the following specification, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side view of a track illustrating the location of the gates and other details.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of one of the gates illustrating the control ling motor.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4: is a vertical sectional view through one of the circuit controllers.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view through line 5-5 of Fig. 4, and I Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the wiring of the device in detail.
Referring to the drawings in detail the numeral 1 designates a track rail besidewhich the gates 2 are pivotally mounted between the standards 3. The pivot sha'ft a of each gate extends beyond the standard 3 and carries a large gear wheel 5 which meshes with a pinion 6 on the shaft of the gate controlling motor 7. A pulley 8 is mounted on the motor shaft beside the pinion 6 and around this pulley is a belt 9, the use of which will be more fully hereinafter described.
Mounted beside the track is a housing 10 having a horizontal shaft journaled therein one end of which carries a pulley 12 around which the belt 9 runs. A drum 13 of suitable insulating material is secured to the shaft between the walls of the housing and.
attached to the periphery thereof are con tact plates 14 as will be clearly seen upon reference to Figs. 4 and 5. Spring contact fingers 15 are attached to the inner faces of the end walls of the housing 10 and their free terminals bear upon the periphery of the drum as shown. The arrangement of these fingers is such that when the drum is partially rotated two of said fingers will be in electrical communication.
In the diagram are illustrated the train controlled contacts which comprise the housings 16 having secured to their bottom Walls the contact plate 17 and the spring contacts 18. Plungers 19 are attached to the spring contacts and extend through the cover of the housings, carrying at their upper ends the treads 20 which are adapted to be engaged by the flanges of the wheels of the train when the same approached the crossing.
In operation it will be understood that the power for operating may be supplied by a battery or other power source 21 and when a train approaches the crossing from either direction the current will flow through the contact springs 18 and contacts 17, thence the spring fingers-15 and plates 14 through the motors 7 thereby lowering the gates. Simultaneously with the closing of the circuit the lamps 22 will be illuminated. After the train has passed, the same engages the tread on the opposite side of the gate and completing the circuit will cause the current to flow through the armatures of the motors in a direction opposite that of the first operation, thus raising the gates and extinguishing the light by breaking the circuit between the lower fingers 15.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred form of this invention it is to be understood that certain minor changes in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is,
In a device of the character described the combination of a plurality of housings, plungers in said housings extending through the cover thereof, treads at the upper ends of said plungers, adapted to be engaged by the flanges of the wheels of a train of cars, spring contacts within said housings at the lower ends of said plunger-s, contact plates connection With said plate contacts, and a in said housings, a motor for each gate, a housing, spring contact fingers attached to the slde Walls of sald houslng 1n electrical the operation of said treads by the flanges of the Wheels of a train, for automatically closing said gates by an approaching train and for opening the same by a departing train.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
WILLIAM WISNIEWSKI.
