To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILL AM B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fredric, in the county of Monroe and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Motor-Cars, of which the following is'a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for motor cars which permit the cars to be used as stationary engines for driving machinery; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed. 1
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of an attachment constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2'is a plan view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the attachment. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the rear end portion ofthe shaft and the stub shaft which engages with the motor shaft of the car.
The attaclnnent is specially adapted for use with the cars known as .Ford cars,-but it may be used with any other make of car to which it can be applied.
The radiator portion 2 of a car at the front 'end thereof, and a portion of the motor shaft 3, are shown. The motor shaft 3 has a cross-pin 4, and the radiator casing or an extension of its front plate frequently has a hole 5 in front of the end of the motor shaft for the insertion of the usual starting device which engages with the motor shaft and the pin In a Ford car the motor shaft 3 is arranged in line with a space or opening under the radiator and between it and the axle and springs.
In carrying out this invention a shaft 5 is provided, and is journaled in bearings 6 on a supporting frame orbase 7 The shaft is arranged axially in line with the motor shaft 3, and the base 7 is supported from the radiator casing or any other convenient portion of the car by means of detachable brackets 8. The shaft 5 is adjustable longitudinally in its bearings, and 9 is a collar provided with a removable set-screw 10 for securing it to the shaft 5. This collar bears against the front shaft bearing, and prevents the haft from sliding forwardly when secured to it by the set-screw.
The rear end portion of the shaft 5 has a cylindrical chamber 12 formed in it, and this chamber has longitudinal slots 14 at its sides. A stub shaft 15 is provided, and its Specification of Letters Patent.

The stub shaft 15 is thrust through the hole 5' 1n the extension of the front plate of the radiator casing, and it has a collar 17 secured on it." A helical spring 18 encircles the stub shaft, and is arranged between the radiator casing and the collar 17. .The rear end portion of the stub shaft 15 is provided with a cup or soclret 20 having longitudinal slots 21 for engaging with the motor shaft 3 and its cross-pin 4.
The front end portion 24 of the shaft 5 is reduced in diameter, and is provided with a cross-pin 25. A starting crank 26 of any approved make is provided, and its hub 27 is slidable on the s aft extension 24, and it has a. clutch 28 for engaging with the crosspin in the way usual with starting cranks.
A fast pulley 30 and a loose pulley 31 are mounted on the front end portion of the shaft 5, and a driving pulley 33 is secured on the middle part of the shaft between the shaft bearings.
A fan 35 is rovided, and is secured on a fan shaft 36, w ich is journaled in a bearing 37 secured to the rear bearing of the shaft 5.
The fan shaft is arranged parallel to the shaft 5, and the fan is arranged in front of the radiator so that the blast is directed against the radiator and the motor of the car. A belt pulley 38 is securedon the front part of the fan shaft 36, and 39 is a belt which passes over the pulleys 33 and 38 and drives the fan from the shaft 5. The pulley 38 is made with a broad face to allow for the sliding movement or adjustment of the shaft 5. Any other approved driving mechanism may beused for operatively connecting the shaft 5 with the fan shaft.
When the motor car is stationary it may be used to drive any sort of machinery by means of the fast and loose pulleys 30 and 31 and any suitable driving belt. The power is taken directly from the motor shaft, which is preferably unclu tched from the transmission gearing of the car.
