WOVEN FABRIC.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 28, 1 919.
Application led January 25, 191B. Serial` Illu, 213m.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. GEUPE, a citizen of the United States of America, residingat Hudson Boulevard, North Bergen, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Woven Fabrics, of which the following is a s ecification.
This invention relates to tu e belts or forming bands for cigarette making machines.
An object of this invention is to rovide a construction of tube belts yor arming bands for cigarette making machines of greater effective life. In the use of tube belts or forming bands, for making cigarettes, a shoe or former is employed through which th l belt. or band travels. In such use of tube belts a strip of paper of indefinite length is fed on the belt, and the cigarette tobacco fed on the strip, and u on travel of the belt through the shoe, the be t is curved to form a tube thereby rolling the cigarette paper and to acco contained therein, and upon application of adhesive, a cigarette of indefinite len h is formed, which is cut to desired lengt s to form individual cigarettes.
Under such circumstance 'of use, the belt is brought into frictional engagement with the sides of the shoe and owing to the woven structure of heretofore employed belts, the life of the belt is of' short duration.
In accordance with this invention, the belt is woven endlessly and the woven` structure of the belt is formed of warp and weft threads arranged one under and one over, respectively, or the purpose of attaining flexible ed e portions of the band, extending respective y lengthwise ofthe band, and for the additional purpose of imparting greater tensile stren h to the centralportion of the band` exten ing lengthwise of the band, the central portion is woven of double wa threads passing under and over single we threads. The warp threads are referwbly of substantially uniform thic ess or diameter andpf a continuous thread extending in convolutions, each convolution being substantially the length of the resultant belt. The weft threads are also preferably of sub stantially uniform thickness or diameter.
Further features and objects of the'invention will be more fully' understood from the following description and the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 shows diagrammaticall an endlessly woven cigarette belt emb ying my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a detail lan view, on an enlarged scale, of a pre erred form of the invention, showing the weaving structure.
Referring to the drawings, the belt 1 is continuous, and preferably continuously woven and accordingly Without any termination. The width and length of the belt are varied, as desired.
This invention pertains particularly to,
belts for use in cigarette making machines of the usual type, embodying a forming shoe through which the belt passes. The `belt serves to feed a strip of pa er of indefinite length, on which is fed the cigarette tobacco.
Upon travel of the belt through the forming shoe, the edge portions of the belt are curved upwardly, to thereby roll the paper strip and tobacco contained thereon into a tube or cigarette of indefinite length, which is cut by? suitable severing means into individual cigarettes. Suchbelt is known in the trade as a forming band or tube belt.
I have discovered that the provision of a plurality of warp threads for the central portion of the belt, passing longitudinally of the belt, assing under and over the' single weft threa s, and the weft threads fdr such central `portion passing under and ov r such plurality of warp threads, effects i great increase in the tensile strength of the resultant belt and a consequent increased :life of the belt. Such construction serves also to maintain a uniform feeding of the strip of paper and to maintain auniform discharge o the formed cigarette through the forming s oe.
As indicated in Fig. 2, the edge portions of the beltare preferably formed of a weaving structure comprising single weft threads passing under and ci er single warp threads and single warp threads passing under and over single weft threads. Such preferred construction. effects increased pliabilit of the oppositely disposed edge portions of the belt, whereby7 the curving action of the belt in the forming shoe is enhanced, with decreased frictional engagement with the curved sides of the forming shoe, thereby further increasingr the life of the belt.
In the specific form of the invention shown in Fig. 2, the belt is endlessly woven by winding the warp threads L). continuously as convolutions, each convolution beinr substantially equal to the length of the resultant belt, the weft threads 3 being successively interlaced therewith to form the end le-ssly woven belt. The weaving structure is preferably ot' the. simple weave, that is, the weft threads and warp threads extending substantially at right angles to one another, as disclosed in my co-pending application entitled Cigarette conveyor band, Serial Number 137,949, tiled by me on the 20th day of December, 1916.
The weaving structure of the central portion (i of the belt l as shown in Fig. coinprises two single warp threads 7, T, whereas the outer or edge portions of the belt comprise but single threads 8. The weft threads 9 for the central portion of the belt are passed as single threads under and over such two single warp threads 7, and for the outer or edge portions, the weft threads 7 pass under and over single warp threads 8.
The band or belt is subjected to a inishing treatment under increased temperature condition and with or Without a suitable binding or finishing material, as understood single threads if desired and that the direct-ion of extension may be transverse of the direction of length of the fabric other than at right angles.
Whereas 1 have described my invention by reference to specific forms thereof, it will be understood that many changes and modificatiorismayV be'made without departing from the spirit oi'sthe invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A cigarette forming band, woven endv lessly comprising an inner portion having a. weaving structure ot' single weft threads each passing under and over two warp threads, aml ot' warp threads each passing under and over single. weft threads and outer oppositely disposed edge portions having a weaving structure of single warp threads passing under and over single weft threads and single weft threads passing under and over single warp threads.
2. A cigarette forming band, woven endlesslv. comprising an edge portion having a weaving structure ot' each weft thread passing under one and over one warp thread and ot' each warp thread passing under and over om` weft thread and comprising a central portion having a weaving structure of each wet't thread passing under and over two warp threads and each warp thread passing under land over one weft thread.
:L A cigarette forming band comprising opposite edge portions, each edge portion having a weaving structure ot' each weft thread passing under and over single warp threads and each warp thread passing under and over single weft threads. and a portion disposed substantially centrally of said edge portions and having a weaving structure of single weft threads each passing under and over two Warp threads and each war thread passing under and over single we t threads.
4. A cigarette formingl band extending endlessly, comprising edgeportions having a weaving structure of singlewarp threads passing under and over single weft threads and single weft threads passing under and over single warp threads and a central portion having a weaving structure formed of a greater number of warpn threads passin under and over a lesser nu-mber of we t threads respectively and a lesser number of weft threads passing under and over a greater number of warp threads respectively.
5. An endless cigarette forming band comprising opposite edge portions, each edge portion having a weaving lstructure of single weft threads passing under and over single warpv threads and single war threads passing under and over single We t threads and an intermediate ortion havin a Weaving structure of sing e weft threat s passing under and over a plurality of warp threads and each Warp thread passing under and over single weft threads.
i In testimon whereof I have signed this specification t is 12th da of Januar 1918.
