Description

J. S. RUE.
Improvement in Extension-Rulers.
Patented Oct- 8, 1872.
"N0. I3I,973.
min 636 an UNITED STATES JOHN s. EUE, or NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION RULERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,973, dated October 8, 1872.
To all whom itmag concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. RUE, of Newark, New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Combination Extension Rule, Paper- Outter and Caliper; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the let- 1 ters of reference marked thereon, and forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a ruler partly extended Fig. 2 is a'section view of the same 5 Fig. 3 is an inverted view; and Fig. 4 is a similar view, showing a modification of the fastening device.
This invention consists in having two strips, A and B, of wood or other suitable material, so fitted together as that a straight and true line may be drawn either in pencil or ink, one edge being used with pencil, and the other with pen, equally as well when extended as when closed and also to form a caliper. The first object is accomplished by having the edges beveled and adjusted, substantially as hereinafter described and shown; the second object is accomplished by having a hole bored through the part A at b, so that the diameter of any round article not larger than said hole may be obtained by inserting it in the hole and sliding the part B up against it, a scale being marked on the part B for the purpose, as well also for the purpose of continuing the scale marked on the part A when the rule is extended.
The part A,on the inn er or j oint surface, has an oblique groove, a, and tongue, 0, running parallel with the edges. On the inner or joint surface of the part B is a corresponding groove,
d, and an oblique tongue, E, said tongue E being made of spring metal and about a half inch long, said tongues and grooves being so arranged in relation to each other as that,
when adjusted, the parts A and B are nicely' either part being used as a papercutter when so disconnected. The parts A and B may also be held together by the use of a thumb-screw or nut, or by an ordinary wood screw, there being in such case a slot in the part B through which the screw slides; when adjusted in this way the oblique tongue and groove may be dispensed with.
It will be observed. that a scale is marked on the ends of the rule, which will be found convenient for marking parallel lines.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The compound extension rule, consisting of two segments separated bya diagonal ton guedand-grooved section, constituting arule, papercutter and calipers, the whole being constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as set forth and described.
