Be it known that yl, SAMUnL BUGHSBAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of @ook and State ot lllinois, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in SocketShells, ot
which the following is a lull, clear, concise,
and exact description7 reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to shells for electric switches and in one of its forms is more'particularly for use in connection with a shell for what is commonly called a pendant switch, this being a switch which is fastened to the end of a flexible cord extending downn wardly trom some lamp or other translating device, the switch itself controlling the circuit through said lamp or translating device.
1 will explain this particular iorm which my invention may take more in detail by referring to the accompanying drawing illustrating the same, in which l Figure 1 is a side elevation partially in section;

rEhe shell of my invention is constructed in two parts, the base part 1 and the cap 2. This shell incloses a switch movement and in order to properly show the cooperation of the shell and its use, 1 will hriedy eX- plain the switch structure in connection with which it is used so `far as the particu'- lar embodiment of the invention herein is concerned.
This switch movement comprises the insulating support 3 having a central recess l and having two side recesses 5 and 6 within which circuit controlling springs 7 and 8 are mounted, the same being held in place by screws 9, 10, which screws extend through the insulating` piece 3 and hold the connecting terminal strips 12. These terminal strips carry connecting screws 14. The means ior making and breaking the circuit between the springs 7 and 8 consist ot Specification of Letters Patent.

a circuit controlling element 15 mounted at the extremity of a link 16 slidahly and loosely carried on an extension 17 of a hase piece 18. rThis extension 17 has the aperture 19 through which the link 16 is movable. A spring 20 normally "forces the switch element away 'from the standard 17 and against the rocking link 21. Said link 21 through the agency of a centrally located aperture 21 is placed upon the stud 25, which study forms part of the arm 2G. This arm 26 is also part of the base piece 18. 'llhe rocking link 21 has the limits of its motion set hy lugs 27 27 forming part of upwardly projecting shelves 28, these shelves likewise being part of the base piece 18. @nly one lug 27 is shown in Fig. 2 as the other lug 27 which occupies a correspondlng position is shown broken away. Screws 29 hold the switch structure in position in the insulating base 3. Finger pieces 30 and united by the stem 32 act upon the upper portion of the rocking link 21 to push it lirsttoward one side and then toward the other. r1`his-stem 32 projects through the opening 33 in the link 21. rllhese finger pieces 30 and 31 project outwardly of the shell, as clearly apparent from the illustration.
rllhe specic details of the switch movement have no particular bearing on the invention claimedv herein except to illustrate the coperation ot a switch movement with the cap and shell structure disclosed here in. For this reason a fuller description of the switch movement is not made herein. the same being fully described and claimed in my cci-pending application Serial No. 181,967, liled July 21, 1917.
The base piece 1 of this shell has a slightly enlarged annular portion 34: and has holes 35 which are punched inwardly to form annular supporting rings 36. Through these holes 35 the iinger pieces 30 and 31 project. The base portion 1 likewise has the holes 37 which cooperate with the projections 38 provided in the opposite sides of the cap piece 2. The cap piece likewise has cutaway portions 39, which cutaway portions are of a width equal to the diameter ot the annular supporting rings 36. Thus when the switch structure is putin place in the hase piece 1 the cap 2 can he snapped into position by inserting said cap 2 into the enlarger?. annular portion 34.- with the lower portion of the openings 39 alining with the annular rims 36. A slight rotative movement of the cap 2 relative to the base l auses the projections 38 finally to snap into position in the openings 37. The cap is thus securely held in place not only by the projections but also by the tendency ot the overhanging part et() ot the cap 2 to hold the shell pieces together.
In order to separate the parts a slight relative rotative movement is given them whereby the. walls of the recess 39 slide along the annular ridge ot the rings 36, this movement at the same time releasing the 1@rejections 38 from the openings 37. base portion l ot the shell is likewise provided with insulating paper or similar material al and the cap portion 2 is ,rovided with similar insulating material 2.
In Fig. 5 l show the shell as made of two parts 5l and 52 respectively, the part representing the cup-shaped portion of the ordinary socket and the part 5l representing the lower portion of the shell of the socket having the open mouth 53. The baci; portion 52 of the socket shell has the inlet tube 54. lt will also be seen that the parts 39 and 40 are reversed in this modified l'orm.
lrom what has been thus described the nature of my invention will be readily clear those skilled in the art. Having however thus described one orm which my invention may taire, what l claim new and deire te secure by Letters Patent is:
L A shell for electric switches of the character described comprising two separable shell portions, one of said portions being substantially cup-shaped and the other one et' said shell portions having an inwardly extending projection and a recess, said iirst shell portion having an outward projection adapted to enter said recess and an inclined slot formed in its edge adapted to cooperate with said inwardly extending projection whereby when said shell portions are placed into juxtaposition and turned the inclined slot coperates with said inward projection to aline said outward projection with said recess, the lower wall of said slot engaging the inwardly extending projection to assist in drawing the portions together, said projection adapted to guide a switch element extending through said inclined slot.
2. A shell for electric switches of the character described comprising two separable shell portions, onel ot said portions being substantially cup-shaped aud the other one of said shell portions having an inwardly extending projection and a recess, said first shell portion having an outward projection adapted to enter said recess and miente an inclined slot adapted to coperate with said inwardly extending projection whereby when said shell portions are placed into juxtaposition the inclined slot cooperates with said inward projection to aline said outward projection with said recess, said inwardly extending projection constituting substantially the periphery of an opening through said shell portion adapted to accommodate a switch control piece.
3. A shell for electric switches, of the character described comprising two separable shell portions, one of said portionsr being substantially cup-shaped, and the other one or" said shell portions having inwardly extending projections and recesses, the projections being adapted to guide a switch control piece, said iirst shell portion having rigid outwardly extending projections adapted to enter said recesses and inclined slots adapted to cooperate with said inwardly extending projections whereby when said shell portions are placed into juxtaposition and turned the inclined slots coperate with said inward projections to draw the shell portions together and aline said outward projections with said recesses, said projections, recesses and slots being respectively each to each on opposite sides of said shell portions,

5. A shell for electric switches comprising two telescoping members adapted to be turned relatively to one another, one member having hollow projections and the other member having inclined slots adapted to enthe projections to draw the members together as they are turned relatively to one another, said projections adapted to guide a switch element supported by said projectlons.
