LATHE-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented (lot. 21, 1919.
Application filed November 25, 1918. Serial No. 264,078.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnnovio E. HUNT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Springfield, in the county of Greeneand State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lathe- Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in lathe tools, and has for its object to provide a tool of the character specified to replace the usual tailstock center in the tailstock of a turning lathe, for permitting the desired degree of taper to be obtained by the adjustment of the tool.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device in the position in which it is used;
' Fig. 2 is a transverse section;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
In the present embodiment of the invention a holder is provided in the form of a cross head, consistingof a body 1 and a central stem 2, the said stem being a standard lathe center shank. The body 1 of the holder has its opposite side walls undercut, as shown, to form an undercut rib, and a slide 3 of substantially U-shape inbcross section is mounted to slide upon the r1 The holder has laterally extending flanges 4 at its opposite sides, and the edges of the side walls of the sllde abut these flanges. The slide is held in adjusted position on the holder by meansof clamp screws 5. Each clamp screw is journaled in one side wall of the slide and has threaded engagement with the other side wall, so that by means of the set screws the side walls may be tightened upon the body of the slide? The slide 3 has a central centering stem 6 which is adapted to engage and center the work, and itv will be obvious that when the slide is moved longitudinally of the holder the centering stem will also be moved.
,An internally threaded openin 7 is proody, and a, screw 8 having a knurled head 9 is engaged with the opening. A dial plate 10 18 secured to that end of the slide adjacent to the opening 7, and the screw 8 has a.
plain portion which engages a central opening in the dial plate. At one side edge the dial plate has an inwardly ofiset inwardly extending rib 11 connected to the body of the dial by a web, and this rib engages similarly shaped notches .in the edges of the side walls of the slide. Screws 12 connect the other edge of the dial plate with the slide. The dial has an annularly graduated scale 13, and the knurled head 9 of the screw 8 has an indicator 14 cooperating with the scale, to indicate the position of the screw with respect to the dial and with respect to the body 1 of the holder.
A coil spring 15 encircles the screw, between the dial and the adjacent end of the body 1 of the holder, the saidspring acting normally to press the slide and the dial away from the holder, that is, the screw moves the holder and the dial in one direction and the spring moves them in the opposite direction.
In practice, when it is desired to cut a taper, the screws 5 are loosened and by means of the screw 8 the slide is adjusted to the properrelative position with respect to thebody 1 of the holder. The amount of off centering is indicated on the dial by the indicator. When the proper degree of ofl center is'attained, the parts are clamped together by means of the set screws 5. It will be noticed that one of these set screws is arranged at each end of the slide.
' I claim:
A device of the character specified com shank, and having at its opposite side a rib provided with undercut side walls, a slide provided with a groove for receiving the rib and carrying a centering stem, a set screw having threaded engagement with the holder, said screw having a head extending beyond the slide at one end, a plate prising a holder having a standard center
