Description

T. KAWAL APPARATUS FOR CHARGING BLAST FURNACES.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 13. new.
Patented Oct. 14, 1919.
. 1m: COLUMBIA PLANOGIAPII cm, WASHINGTON, l) c.
TOKUJi KAWAI, or KOKURAQJAPAN;
APPARATUS FOR CHARGING BLAST-FURNACES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 13, 1918. Serial No. 239,908.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, TOKUJI KAWAI, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, and a resident of No. 21% Konya-Oho, Kokura, Empire of Japan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Charging .Blast-Furnaces,of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates toimprovements in apparatus for charging blast furnaces and more particularly to that type of furnaces in which the feeding hopper, distributing bell and charger bell are arranged in superposed relation, the object of the invention being to provide an lmproved apparatus embodying, means for shifting the feeding hopper sidewise in any desired dlrection when said feeding hopper is raised, and to thereby control the direction in which the material isfed into the furnace and thus avoid supplying material to any worn out or damaged portion known to be in the interior of the furnace.
Blast furnaces have heretofore been constructed wherein the feeding hopper, distributing bell and charging bell are arranged in superposed relation. The present invention is an improvement upon the said known furnaces and consists in providing means to automatically shift. the feeding hopper when the same is raised in any direction which may be required by the internal condition of the furnace and'to the end that .the materialfedthrough the saidhopper may be thrown into any required part of the charging hopper to .be directed by the latter into the desired portion of the furnace.
With the above and other objects in view,
7 the invention consists in' the construction,
combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view of a blast furnace charging apparatus constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention, and showing the feeding hopper in raised position in full lines and in lowered position in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
The blast furnace 1 is provided at the.
upper end with the usual charging hopper 1 A suitable frame 2 is arranged above the furnace and includes vertical corner posts 2*. A truncated conical cover 3 is arranged above the furnace and may be raised and lowered by chains 20 and a lever 6. In the top of the cover 3 is a feeding Patented Oct. 14, 1919.
hopper 1, which is movable with said cover and which is supplied with the material with which the furnace is to be charged by means of a suitable truck 5 such as is .commonly employed. The chains 20 permit the. cover otally connected to the topof the charging bell and its upper end connected by a chain to a lever 18, said lever serving tolower and raise the charging bell, as will be understood., A distributing bell 12is arranged above the charging bell and below the feeding hopper 4 and has a centrally arranged tube 13 extending upwardly therefrom, and through which the rod 17 extends. A suitable cord; orchain 1% is attached to the upper end of the tube 13, passes oversuitable supporting sheaves, asfshow'n, and is provided at the free outer end with a counter balancing weight 15. A stop 19 is attached to said cord or chain and by engagement with a bracket on the frame serves to limit the eXtentof the upward movement of the disributing bell.
I also provide a series of radially arranged adjusting screws 7 which are mounted in threaded bearings on the corner posts of the frame. The inner ends of these adjusting screws engage vertical wedge-shaped cam blocks8 which areso arranged as to engage around the inclined wall of the cover 3 when the latter 'is raised. Ordinarily,
when the interior of the furnace is in'good condition at all points the adjusting screws and the blocks 8 will be so arranged as to cause the cover3, when raised, to be exactly concentric with the charging hopper 1. In
charging the furnace, the cover3 is first raised, together with the feeding hopper 4 by means of the lever 6, thus causing the distributing bell 12 to open the. discharge charging hopper, and the charging bell is then lowered, to cause the material in the charging hopper to drop therefrom, around the charging bell, and evenly into the interior of the furnace. The cover 3 has an explosion hole 9, and also has a hinged closure 10 for said explosion hole. This closure is connected by a cord or chain 11 to the lever 18, and hence said closure is automatically operated by said lever, as will be understood.
/V-hen a part of the interior of the fur naee is worn out or in damaged condition, it is desirable to avoid feeding or charging material to such worn out or damaged part.
To accomplish this, the adjusting screws 7 and the cam blocks 8 may be so arranged as to cause the cover 3 when the same rises and engages'with said cam blocks, to be moved sidewise in the required direction to cause the hopper & to drop its contents mainly on one side of the distributing bell, and so that. the material will be correspondingly unevenly supplied to the charging hopper, with the result that when the charging bell islowered the material will be so supplied to the furnace as to avoid said worn out or damaged part. Hence by appropriately turning the adjusting screws 7 so as to shift the cover 3 in the required direction, when said cover is raised, any damaged part of the interior of the furnace may be avoided when charging the furnace.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In blast furnace charging apparatus, in combination with the charging hopper and charging bell, means to operate the charging bell, a cover for the charging hopper, means to raise and lower said cover, a feeding hopper on said cover, a distributing bell arranged above the charging bell and below the feeding hopper and also arranged for vertical movement independently of the feeding hopper and the charging bell.
, 2. In blast furnace charging apparatus,
in combination with the charging hopper and charging bell, means to operate the charging bell, a cover for the charging hopper, means to raise and lower said cover, a
feeding hopper on said cover, a distributing below the feeding hopper and also arranged for vertical movement independently of the feeding hopper and the charging bell, and adjusting means for the cover and feeding hopper, said adjusting means serving to poition said cover and feeding hopper, when raised, either concentrically, or eceentrically, with respect to the charging hopper, as may be required.
l. In blast furnace charging apparatus,
in combination with the charging hopper and charging bell, means to operate the charging bell, a cover for the charging hopper, means to raise and lower said cover, a feeding hopper on said cover, a distributing bell arranged above the charging bell andbelow the feeding hopper and also arranged for vertical movement independently of the feeding hopper and the charging bell, and adjusting means for the cover and feeding hopper, said adjusting means serving to position said cover and feeding hop-per,
when raised, either concentrically, or eccentrically, with respect to the charging hopper, as may be required, and comprising radially arranged adjusting screws and cam blocks carried by said cover and arranged to engage said screws.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
