AUTOMOBILE DIRECTION-INDICATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 13, 1919. Serial No. 282,256.
To (all whom, it may r-om-e'm:
Be It known that I, HENRY THOMAS 'Domx, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York. inthe Province of Ontario, Canada, have'inventcd certain new and useful Iniprovements in Automobiie Direction-Indicators, of which the following is the specifica tion,
My invention. relates to improvements in automobile direction indicators and the object of the invention is to devise simple means which may operate a mechanical hand to place it. in various indicating positions extending from the side of a car and it consists essentially of the'follo-wing arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter more particularly explained.
Figure 1, is a pore )ective view of my de vice showing it attac ed to the wind shield frame.
Fig. 2, is an enlarged perspective detail partially broken away and in section, showin the parts in the normal position.
Fig. 3, is a similar view to Fig. 2, showing the parts in the position they assume when indicating a turn to the left.
Fig. l, is a similar view to Figs. 2 and 3, showing the parts in the position they assume when giving a turn to the light.
Fig. 5, is a similar view to Figs. 2, 3 and 4, showing the parts in-the position they assume indicating stop.
' Fig. 6, is a vertical section through Fig. on a line with the pivot pin 5.
F ig. 7, is a vertical section through F lg. 2, taken on a line with the cam roller 6.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the va= rious figures.
1 indicates a casing which is rectangular in form and set vertically with its outer longitudinal vertical edge open at l". 2 indieates a plate secured within the casing and n'ovided with a cam orifice 2*. The opposite longitudinal edge wall of the casing 1 is provided at its lower end with a slotted orifice 1. 3 indicates an operating bar which extends through such slotted opening and is provided at its outer endwith a suitable knoh 3 or other device for pushing the bar 3 longitudinally through the orifice 1. The forward end of the bar 3 is provided with. a channel portion 3*.
4 indicates a hand indicator, which is provided at its lower end with a rectangular portion- 4 having its lower forward corner 4* rounded ofi'. 5 indicates apt-n entending through the channel portionii 'of' the bar Patented ct- 141; 1919.
t5 and through the portion of the hand con- One centric ally with the round portion 4*.-
side of the channel bar portionflfis extended upwardly at 3 in order'to form-a guiding for the handl during swinging bearin operation. The opposite wall of the channel 1 bar portion. 3* is provided ati3 with a, notch for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
6 indicates a cam roller which"is carried" by the lower portion of the hand '4 at the opposite side to the pivot pinli, such cam roller engaging the edge of the cam orifice 2*. l
The cam orifice 2* is provider] with a hori; zontal lower edge 2 terminating at its inner end in an upwardly and outwardly inclined portion 2 from which extends an upwardly curved portion 2 which is concentric with the center of the pin 5. From the outer end of the curved portion 2 the edge of the orifice extends in an inclined direction inwardly and downwardly at 52 terminating in a. shoulder 2 from which extends an outwardly inclined portion 2 meeting the 0pposite end of the horizontal edge 2' of the cam orifice 2.
When the device is to indicate a stop position the bar 3 is forced outwardly until it assumes the position shown in Fig. 5. If it is desired to indicate a turn to the left, the bar 3 is then drawn sharply inward so that the cam roller first engages the inclined portion 2 and is carried upwardly tilting the hand 4 outwardly so that when the cam roller 6 reaches the upper end of the inclined portion 2 the hand overbalances so as to drop to a horizontal position, the cam roller 6 following the concentric curved edge 2 assun'iing the position shown in Fig. 3.
lVhen it is desired to indicate a turn to the right" the har 3 is again forced outwardly carrying the pivot point?) in a similar direction and thereby forcing the cam roller 6 to travel down the inclined portion '2 of the cam orifice thereby drawing the hand upwardly into an inclined position until it passes the shoulder 2 thereby definitely locking it in such position, preventing its return movement.
In order to return it to normal the hand is taken up to the vertical position by further outward movement of the bar 3 and then by. a return movement drawn into the casi 1.
From this description it will be seen t at I have devised a very simple device whereby all indicating signals necessary are given by a mechanical hand which may be readily operated by the driver of a car from the center of the car or any position adjacent to the steering wheel.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. An automobile direction indicator comprising a casing having a vertical edge opening, a push bar extending through theopposite edge of the casing at the bottom, a hand pivotally mounted upon the push bar in proximity to its front lower corner, a cam roller carried by the rear lower corner of the hand, and a cam plate secured within the interior of the casing and having a cam orifice formed with a horizontal lower edge terminating in an upwardly outwardly inclined portion, and an arc-shape edge concentric with the center of the hand pivot when in the normal position andhaving the forward edge of the orifice inclined inwardly from the top and the bottom.
site edge of the casing at the bottom, a hand pivotally mounted upon the push bar in proximity to its front lower corner, a cam roller carried by the rear lower corner of the hand, a cam plate secured Within the interior of the casing and having a cam orifice formed with a horizontal lower edge terminating in'an upwardl outwardly inclined portion, and an arc-s rape edge concentric with the center of the hand pivot when in the normal position and having the forward edge of the orifice inclined inwardly from the top and the bottom, the inwardly inclined upper and lower portions having a shoulder interposed therebetween.
